Savin Kuk

by barryg23

Savin Kuk is amongst the most beautiful mountains in Durmitor National Park. It lies in the east of the park, overlooking the black lake, with its summit rising to 2313m. Though only the 13th highest peak in Durmitor peak, Savin Kuk is one of the most visited, partly because of its easy accessibility. On its eastern side, a chair lift runs from ground level to about 1900m. This is used during the winter season and in the summer by hikers. From the top of the chair lift it takes about an hour to reach the summit. The path is initially steep, along a scree slope, but it levels out closer to the top. You reach the saddle between Savin Kuk and Sjelme from the where there are fantastic views of Bobotov Kuk and the rest of the high peaks in the park. From the saddle it's 15 minutes walk to the top and just like on the other summits the views were excellent. In particular, we had a great view...

Bobotov Kuk

by barryg23

The centerpiece of Durmitor National Park is Botobov Kuk, which, at 2523m, is the highest peak in the park, and the fourth highest overall in Montenegro (incidentally, the country's highest peak, Kolata, found on the Montenegro/Albania border is only 5 metres higher than Bobotov Kuk). The town of Zabljak is a convenient base for exploring Durmitor park, and many people attempt to reach Bobotov Kuk by starting from Zabljak. This can be done in one long day or split into two days by camping overnight in the park at Lokvice. A closer start point is the Sedlo pass to the south of Bobotov Kuk, but no public transport runs this way. The trail from Zabljak is well signposted, with red paintmarks on rocks and trees all the way to the summit. It starts near the Ivan Do campsite at the western edge of town, above the Black Lake. The initial parts of the hike go through thick forest though there are...

The Black Lake

by barryg23

It's hard to pick a highlight from all the beautiful sights in Durmitor National Park, but there's no doubt about what's the most popular site. The Black Lake (Crno Jezero) attracts huge numbers of visitors, attracted by its stunning setting in a forest at the foot of Meded mountain. The lake lies 3 km west of Zabljak, gateway town to the national park. There is a car park about 1km from the park, which is as close as you can get by car and where you have to pay a small entrance fee (extra if you're using the car park). From here it's ten minutes walk down to the lake shore. The Black Lake is actually two lakes: Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero (Small and big lake). A 3.5 km trail runs around the circumference of the lake and offers great views of the surrounding scenery. At the point where the two lakes meet is Tito's Cave, named after a place where the then leader of the communists met...

Kotor

by barryg23

With it's narrow streets, peaceful squares and historic buildings it's no surprise that Kotor is one of the most popular destinations in Montenegro. The walled town lies on the Bay of Kotor, and like other towns along the coast, the town boundaries have expanded well beyond the original walls. But its what's found inside these historic walls that attracts most visitors to Kotor. The main entrance to the town is at the Sea Gate, which contains an inscription with the date of Kotor's WWII liberation. Beyond the gate lies the main square, Trg od Oruzja, whose most impressive building is the clocktower. Narrow alleys lead off from this square in a couple of directions. Heading east you come to the huge St. Tryphon's Cathedral, dating from the 12th century. This is just one of many impressive churches within the walls; others to look out for include the Church of St. Nicholas and church of St....

Kotor Fortress Walls

by barryg23

The trip to Kotor fortress is a short but spectacular hike along the old town walls and up a trail which finished at a viewpoint high above the town. The trail starts behind the Church of St. Maria at the northern end of the old town. At the start of the trail you pay 2 Euro for access to the trail. The path quickly steepens and after about 15 minutes climbing you reach the first stop, the Church of Our Lady of Health. This is a good place to take in the views or to take a rest on a hot day. A well placed mini shop sells cold drinks for quite expensive prices - worth it on a hot day. From the church the path continues steepening and narrowing while the views just get better and better. The final stop is the ruined fortress, reached after about 35-40 minutes walking. Views are good in all directions; the mountains to the east, Kotor below you and the Bay of Kotor to the west and north....

Lovcen Mountain

by barryg23

Lovcen consists of two peaks, the higher Stirovnik (1748m) topped by a communications tower and Jezerski vrh (1657m) which contains the mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos. Despite being a smaller height, Jezerski vrh is by far the most visited of the two, as many people come to pay their respects to a Montenegrin hero as well as to enjoy the fantastic views from the summit. A circular road which passes through Lovcen Park gives provides easy access to the summit. This road ends just below the summit where there is a car park and from where a long series of steps lead you up to the mausoleum entrance. There is a viewing terrace in front of the terrace from where you have good views in 3 directions with only the view west to Kotor obscured by the mausoleum. There is no cost for visiting this terrace though it costs 3 Euros to go inside the mausoleum. In here is an impressive statue of...

Church of the Rock

by barryg23

The Church of the Rock is one of the best known landmarks in the Bay of Kyoto. It's located on an island close to the village of Operas, from where regular water taxis make the short trip. The church dates from the 15th century and there are many colourful stories regarding its origin. According to one tale we read, two sailors found an icon on the rock one day and took it back to the mainland. The following day the icon had strangely found its way back to the island. To celebrate this miracle the locals built a church on the rock, and it has been a place of worship and pilgrimage ever since. Much of the interior contains paintings by Tripod Koala, a 17th century Croatian artist, while the outstanding piece is the ornamental altar. We were given a very informative tour by a friendly local guy who told us much about the history of the church and of Operas. Behind the church is a small...

Perast

by barryg23

Our first stop in Montenegro after crossing the border from Croatia was in the small town of Perast, located on the Bay of Kotor. Perast is a picturesque village in a lovely setting. It lies on the east side of the bay, about 15km north of Kotor. Above the village rise a couple of the many 1000m + peaks that overlook the bay. The village is full of elegant Venetian style buildings - in fact you could be forgiven for thinking you'd wandered into some long lost neighbourhood of Venice such is the similarity. Much of the Montenegrin coast was under Venetian rule for a couple of centuries, and the most visible legacy of this rule is the beautiful architecture in the village. What attracts most visitors to Perast is the Church of the Rock, a famous icon in the middle of the Bay, 5 to 10 minutes boatride from the village. On the main street which runs alongside the water is a small square...

Budva Old town

by xdescendx

The Old Budva's town is a unique architectonic and urban entity, which is mentioned as a lodgment even in the antique period. Budva according to those sources is one of the oldest urban centers in the Adriatic; it is more than 2.500 years old. The walls of the Old town were, and are even today, the attraction for both the tourists from the country as well as for those from the farthest parts of the world. They date from the middle century, when in these areas Venetians ruled. Certain damages the urban nucleus of the Old town experienced twice, first in 1667., and then in 1979. in great earthquakes.

Rafting the Tara (Tear of Europe)

by xdescendx

If you're going to stay in Montenegro, please be sure to go rafting on the Tara river. I'd recommend the Grab campgrounds. The best times to go for white water are April-June. The staff is extremely friendly and the river is absolutely gorgeous. It's said to be the cleanest in all of Europe.
