Favorite thing:
The 1979 Montenegro earthquake referred to by locals in Ulcinj as "the catastrophe'
was the most devastating earthquake on the territory of present-day Montenegro,
then part of Communist Yugoslavia.
The Earthquake
The earthquake, which measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and IX on
the Mercalli intensity scale, occurred on April 15, 1979 at 07:19 local time,
fifteen kilometers from the Montenegrin coast between Bar and Ulcinj.
The tremor lasted for ten seconds and was mostly felt along the Montenegrin
and Albanian coastline.
Ulcinj's Old Town, another Montenegrin Cultural Heritage Site,
was almost totally devastated. The centuries old Balšić Tower
in Ulcinj nearly collapsed as a result of the earthquake.

how bad it was

Favorite thing: This picture shows Ulaz 26 Novembar (26 November street), the street that connects the upper new town (Bulevar Maršala Tita) and the beach. This picture was taken almost halfway. This is busy place with a lot of pedestrians and luckily not too much car traffic, at least when we were there, may be this is not true all the time !

Favorite thing: For those who want to bathe in a quieter place than the crowded city "small beach" (mala plaža) and that do not want to go to the "large beach" (velika plaža), outside (south) to the city can go on the steep slopes of Suka peninsula (Cap Ratislava).

Favorite thing: The Pulti mausoleum stands in the newest part of the town, along Bulevar Maršala Tita. It was built in the XVIIIth century together with two other mausoleums, the Murat Dedej mausoleum and the Resulbegovic mausoleum.

Favorite thing: Right by the side of the ruined church, stands Pasha mosque, built in 1719 by Klič Alija of Montenegro. In the background, the clock tower. I have read on several documents "the famous clock tower" but none of them said why it was famous !
"An especially impressive structure is the Clock Tower, built in 1754"

Favorite thing: Namazdah mosque stands in the upper part of Ulaz 26 Novembar, almost on Bulevar Marsala Tita, at the junction with the newest part of Ulcinj/Ulqin. Besides its name, I have been unable to find any information on this mosque. After a lot of research, I have finally found that it was built in 1828 by Sulejman Mujali.
I have also found that the Main Mosque was built in 1728 and the Mountain Mosque in 1783 but have not identified them ! Next time !
Aurorae wrote me that the Main Mosque was actually Namazdeh Mosque. Thank you Jelena !

Favorite thing: The restaurants advertise in a language that is mainly Albanese but that mixes Italian, and Serbian. It is not always easy to understand. For example, on the photo, you can read the following meals :
Supë, Albanian for soup
Gullash does not need any explanation, neither spaghetti and pizza, nor biftek and ramstek
Speca të mbushura, Albanian for Serb punjene paprike or stuffed paprika,
Peschk, Albanian for fish (pesce in Italian)
Qebapa, pleskavicë, are Albanian writing of kebab and pljeskavica
Pule, Albanian for chicken (poulet in French)
Gjelë të gatshme, Albanian for prepared (?) cock
Pasul, I did not know what it was.
Aurorae sent me the following note (and corrections on some Serbian words mispelled). Unfortunately, I cannot spell correctly the letters that have a diacritic sign :
Pasul is probably pasulj, beans. It's a veeeeeery popular dish in Serbia/ex-Yu, mostly famous for the army service days and often it's called vojniâki pasulj - soldiers beans. It is easy to prepare and very nutritive, and extremely cheap, so it's understandable why it is cooked in huge masses in the army service. Also, people often cook it when they go camping. and funny thing is, the longer it stays, the better it is !!! Unlike the other food!
Kebab = cevapi / cevapaici (you also have to note that this is very different from the turkish döner kebab, which is almost identical to greek gyros - meat grilled on the huge stick and rotated, then served cut in pieces with fries, tomato, onions and mayonnaise or other sauce maybe. cevapi or cevapjici are small rolls of meat in the shape of the finger, but a bit more fat :-) grilled on coal. Bosnia and Leskovac area in Serbia (Leskovacki roztilj - leskovac grill/bbq) is the most famous for cevapi.
Thanks a lot Aurorae !

Favorite thing: Actually, even this steep sea shore is crowded ! Not so much that the city beach but nevertheless, would be bathers must queue to go down into the sea and lust queue to go on the small pier. That won't last, this is the peak season !
