The fastest way to get to Belgrade is by plane. Belgrade airport is situated 20 km from the city centre in Surcin. To the centre, one can get by JAT buses at the lowest price, 120din. Buses run all day long and are clearly marked and parked near the exit of airport building. Beware of free lancing taxi drivers since they charge much more than usual price.

I flew to Belgrade from Rome with alitalia that now has some kind of good prices for this route: 200€ return tiket. If you want to use a low cost company you can fly with wizzair to Timisoara airport which is about 200 kilometers from Belgrade and from there use a private minibus company, Gea, that takes you to the city in 3 hours for 25€.

Frankly speaking Surchin is one of the worst airports I've visited in my life. In terms of service, facilities etc. (Belgrade Airport Management will probably blame it all on period of UN Sanctions.)
Belgrade Airport is 16 km away from city center. Located nearby village od Surchin it is connected to Belgrade both via Zagreb high-way and via side-road (Ledine and Bezanija).
If you don't have pick-up arranged, you can take a cab (beware of them thieving ba***ds!) or public transport (bus no.74 terminates in the city center).
In case you're plane-spotter you might appreciate Serbian Museum of Aviation which is part of the airport complex.
Outsiders, please don't judge Belgrade merely on airport impression!

This tip is most useful to people already in Belgrade who want to travel from there or make a round trip:
Many businesses in Belgrade don't have a store front window. They operate on the word-of-mouth principle. The last time I went to Belgrade I was told by a friend about a travel agency called Beo Di Travel. It's located in a buiding hidden at Svetogorska ulica #2. They have two guys working there named Djole and Dejan and they were very helpful getting me a good cheap ticket from Portland, Oregon to Belgrade. They also gave me some tips on getting away and around, including planning a trip to Zagreb. If you're in town, you can stop by (you have to go through the gate to the building and ring the buzzer to be let in to the smokey little office) or you can give them a call (don't be put off by the gruff way they answer the phone, they're nice guys. They both speak English, Djole better than Dejan). BTW, I did a Google search on them and came up with an OLD address and phone number. My info is correct as of February 2005.

On the way back to your home, if you are traveling by plane, you have to pay airport tax. It coast 800 Yugoslav Dinars (68 YUD = 1 Euro). There are exchange offices and banks at the airport and, also, you can pay with credit card.

Our airliner is called JAT Airways. And it's the cheapest if you want to fly to Belgrade.
It's not so comfortable and de luxe like the big world airliners, someone once said it's a bit better than a bus :))), but I find it veeeery nice in fact (except for the new colours, yuk! What a shame!!!) and the meals are terrific!!!!

THESE ARE THE FIELDS OF WESTERN VOJVODINJA, THE NORTHERN PART OF SERBIA. VOJVODINJA IS A PROVENCE OF SERBIA THAT IS MOSTLY FLAT AND FERTILE. AS A RESULT IT IS THE "BREADBASKET" OF THE COUNTRY, WHERE MUCH OF THE FOOD IS GROWN.
I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT IS VERY FLAT, AS I HAVE TAKEN A COUPLE TRAIN RIDES THROUGH THIS AREA.
IT IS FLAT... BUT THE SCENERY IS STILL AGREEABLE. IT CANNOT COMPARE TO THE ABSOLUTE MONOTONY OF HUNGARY (MADJARSKA IN LOCAL TONGUE).

I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE BADMOUTH YUGOSLAV AIRLINES, BUT EVERY TIME I HAVE BEEN TO BELGRADE, SOME LEG OF MY TRIP HAS BEEN ON "JAT". I FIND THEIR STAFF TO BE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND HELPFUL. I HAVE NOTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS AIRLINE... ONLY GOOD THINGS.
I HAVE FLOWN CONTINENTAL (WHICH CHARGES $6.00 A BEER ON INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS), VIRGIN, KLM,LUFTHANSA, NORTHWEST, JET BLUE etc... AND THE ONLY AIRLINE THAT I RECEIVED A MOIST TOWLETT AND A CLOTH COASTER ON HAS BEEN JAT... SOMETIMES IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR ME.
MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT AS IS THE CASE WITH MANY SMALLER AIRLINES, WE ALWAYS GET STUCK WAITING IN THE CRAPPIEST TERMINAL OF THE AIRPORT.
OTHER THAN THAT GIVE IT A TRY. YOU'LL LIKE IT.
IF YOU ARE IN BELGRADE, THEIR OFFICE IS BEHIND THE HOTEL SLAVIJA.
