Blaywatch, the biggest trap of all

  • There is a series of popular caffes and restaurants at the Danube near hotel Jugoslavija. One of the most popular is Blaywatch, certainly one of the largest ones, where many known faces come to be seen. However, Blaywatch is the biggest night life traps of all. First, you need a reservation to enter unless you don't want to get the worst possible table in a dark corner of this two-storey place. Service is pretty bad for the prices they charge, a waiter forgets that you ordered Coke without ice and brings you a glass full of ice. You will have to be patient if you want a waiter to notice your call after a respectable amount of time. As for the prices, I have never been to a more expensive place in Belgrade. All in all, try to avoid this place never mind its popularity!

Don't catch taxi at main Bus & Rail stations

    Unlicensed taxi
    by Prasnjavi
There are so many unlicensed taxi drivers around main bus and railway station trying to wheedle you to use their service. Immediately, when you step out from a train or bus they will surround you and try to "push" you in their car. They don't have price list and they are negotiated with you for a price. And if you accept that, be sure that you will pay more then you used regular one.

Just walk a little bit far from the station and try to catch some other taxi on the street. Regular taxies have two plates on the roof. One is normal "Taxi" plate and the other one is a number and Belgrade Coat-of-Arm issued by legal institutions.

Take a local bus or tramway which have stations just in front of the station, or call Taxi services and ask for transport.

  • Exchange machine - Belgrade
    Exchange machine
    by Prasnjavi
In the shops, coffee bars and, especially, in the state institutions, the state law forbids paying in a foreign currency. In some shops or coffee bar, they will accept to take Euros but be sure that you will get change in Dinnars. Dollars or some other currencies are not acceptable except in the banks.

There are exchange offices at, almost, every corner and in every hotel. Also, some banks start to install exchange machines.

If you are in some shop, first wait to be alone with a seller and then ask to pay in Euro because sellers are very suspicious thinking that you are, maybe, an inspection even if you are speaking in English.

There is no metro in the Belgrade. Some years ago, they start to make some underground railway. That train has name “Beovoz” and it connects some suburbs with the city. Very modern station was build close to monument of Vuk Karadzic in King Aleksandar’s Boulevard.

Do not go to the zoo!

Or go to the zoo and tell everybody you know how awful the zoo in Belgrade is. All the animals are poor inside. Especially the lions, tigers, bears and the rino are really regretable!

After the visit I felt bad, weak and guilty - this was my worst experiance in Belgrade until now, after two years in Belgrad!

Tell everybody how awful the zoo in Belgrade is.

  • Cyrillic-Latin - Belgrade
    Cyrillic-Latin
    by Prasnjavi
The official letter in Serbia and Montenegro is (Serbian) Cyrillic and streets and the most of institutions are marked by it. Maybe, it will make you a problem but try to learn it.
Officially the Cyrillic alphabet is used, and the Latin alphabet is in use. Both are taught at school.

In distinction from the most of other languages in the World, our language is based on the rule “write as you speak, speak as it’s written”. The Serbian Cyrillic alphabet has 30 letters - one letter for every sound, which makes it quite unique compared to the other alphabets.
There are no two, three or, even, four letters for an one sound like in English or French. Also, “A”, “E”, “O”, “J”, “K”, “M” and “T” are same as in English but be careful, when you see “B” it is our “V”, “H” is “N”, “X” is “H”, “P” is “R”, “C” is “S”, “Y” is “U”, and we have some voices that English language doesn’t.

    - Letter No6 is same as Italian pronaunce "GI" (like "GIovanni")
    - Letter No8 is same as French pronaunce "J" (like "Jean")
    - Letter No14 is same as Spanish pronaunce "LL" (like "Castilla")
    - Letter No17 is same as Spanish pronaunce "Ñ" (like "NuÑo")
    - Letter No23 is same as Italian pronaunce "C" (like "CiColina")
    - Letter No28 is same as Englih pronaunce "CH" (like "CHoice")
    - Letter No29 is same as Englih pronaunce "J" or "G" (like "John", "GeorGe")
    - Letter No30 is same as Englih pronaunce "SH" (like "SHop")

    Rest is the same but

    - "A" is always and everywhere "A" (like "Alex),
    - "B" is "B" (like"BomB"),
    - "V" is "V" (like "Victory"),
    - "G" is "G" ("Grand"),
    - "D" is "D" ("DonalD")
    - "E" is "E" ("ElEphant"),
    - "Z" is "Z" (Zero"),
    - "I" is "I" ("IndIana"),
    - "J" is "Y" ("Young", "Youth")
    - "K" is "K" ("KinKy),
    - "L" is "L ("Land"),
    - "M" is "M" ("Mark"),
    - "N" is "N" ("None"),
    - "O" is "O" ("Opera"),
    - "P" is "P" ("PulP"),
    - "R" is "R ("Ronald"),
    - "S" is "S ("Sweet"),
    - "T" is "T" ("Traffic"),
    - "U is "OO" ("spOOn", "cartOOn"),
    - "F" is "F" ("Freez"),
    - "H" is "H" ("Holland"),
    - "C" is "TZ" ("fiTZerald").

It is not heavy as I wrote and you will have some fun learning it.

Ask some young people what you interesting for. Almost everyone speaks one of the world languages.
