Like many big cities Belgrade have a lot of pick pockets. You must be careful especially when you are in the public bus, tram, on the streets...station.. Watch your wallets, documents!!!!! The best way is to keep money on different places, in your pockets, bags and other places Leave a Comment

Tram #2 as a homeless shelter by Zvrlj Similarly to the most of the major cities – Belgrade is hometown of vast homeless population. Besides some spots, many of them can often be seen in the tram #2. The route of the tram #2 is the only circling around the center of the city, without any point in which all the passengers have to leave the tram, except late in the evening, at the end of day regime of public transportation. That makes the tram #2 a homeless shelter which offers possibility to escape from the streets, especially in cold winter days, to take a nap, or even long sleep, and all of that legally, for the price of one-drive public transportation ticket. It is not the tip about any real danger – homeless people are not violent, it is here to prevent surprise and anxiety which is possible sometimes in the tram #2. Leave a Comment

Although Kalemegdan is generally very safe, there are some unprotected places from which a fall could be lethal. Such – a fatal accident occurred in summer of 2007, and opened numerous discussions and polemics on safety… Most of dangerous spots in Kalemegdan are very unaccessible, such as tops of the fortress walls, others are not on the main tourist paths, all are marked with signs, and not a single one reasonable person would approach without being aware of a danger, no matter how slight it could be. But some extra care is needed, especially for those with small children, and those whose perception is disturbed by something previously consumed. Leave a Comment

Belgrade is a remarkably safe city. There are always people out, even late in the winter, and you will feel comfortable walking anywhere almost anytime, although it would be wise to avoid at night secluded places on the outskirts of town and large public parks. Some spots in Belgrade are known for pickpockets (Republic Square, Knez Mihailova Street, Main Railway station, public transportation) so you should carry in your day pack only as much money as you need for the day. Leave the rest of your money, your airplane ticket, passport, and all other valuables in a safe deposit box at the reception desk of your hotel. Begging is not wide-spread, though while sitting in open-air cafés around Republic Square you can be slightly annoyed by some Gypsies (locally recognized under the euphemistic name: Romi). As 'rich foreigners' you can attract their attention, but don't take notice of them! Nevertheless, they are not as aggressive as their 'colleagues' in most other countries. Don't photograph neither police or military-guarded buildings. Amazingly, you won't be allowed to photograph downtown shopping centers (like City Passage) or some extravagant villas of Uzicka street (luxurious residential quarter of Dedinje). So, do not worry about your safety in Belgrade too much, your biggest worry should be that you might not want to go back home! Leave a Comment

Street scene by Fen Despite being in the city for only a few hours, I still had time to almost get myself run over by some mad driver. Like in all cities be careful when crossing the roads because the people in the cars are more in a rush than the people walking in the streets. Leave a Comment

Avoid Autosaobracaj Buses!!! by Zvrlj If you see the sign of Autosaobracaj Kragujevac, try to avoid that bus. There are chances to travel normally, but you can hear a proposal from bus-driver to stand for 10 hours as there are no place to seat down, and the fact that you have reservation for the seat, payed two days in advance, may not help, as they have sold the same reservations to the others. But they care to protect their customers from kittens, so your kitten will not be allowed to enter Autosaobracaj bus. So, if you want to be sure to have seat in the bus or if you travel with pet, no matter how small it is – avoid Autosaobracaj Kragujevac. You can read at the Autosaobracaj web presentation: "In our business philosophy, the word 'friend' dominates – it refers to all employees, to all business partners and to all our passengers… Therefore, our motto is JOURNEY WITH THE FRIEND!" – what a hypocrisy! by Biljana Stray dogs are a HUGE problem in Belgrade. I don't think that anyone has an actual idea of how many strays live on the streets of Belgrade. Since I am a huge dog lover, I've been known to pet strays but that might not be the smartest idea since some of them carry disease and most are not used to kind human contact. Typically they mind their own business and will leave you alone. I do have several friends who were attacked by a group of strays. When in a group, the strays take on a mob mentality which can be rather dangerous for any humans around them. If attacked by a group of dogs your best bet is to seek shelter in a nearby building and call for help. I personally never had a dangerously unpleasant experience with stray dogs. In fact, most strays I've come across were so adorable that I wished I could take them home with me. I did have one unforunate encounter with a stray. While walking in Ada Ciganlija just before sunset I ran into a huge dog sitting next to a fisherman. I thought the dog belonged to the fisherman. So as the dog approached me I lifted my hand to pet his head and before I knew it the dog was humping my leg. He wouldn't leave me alone and followed me around for over 15 minutes until I hid out in a nearby cafe. It was somewhat disconcerning that no one bother to help me in this really somewhat scary experience, instead the men sitting nearby just started laughing. Leave a Comment

Knalja Milana - ex Srpskih vladara ulica by xeberus Because of the historical significance of many of the streets in Belgrade, many have changed names over the last few years. Some more than once. In reading the tips on Belgrade here, I noticed, for example, Bulevar Revolucije (Revolution Boulevard) mentioned. That is now Bulevar Kralja Alksandra and the large street from Terazije to Hotel Slavija was once Srpskih Vladara (Serbian Rulers) and is now Kralja Milana (when I first moved to Belgrade in 1992 it was known as Titova ulica, Tito's Street). Trg Republike (Republic Square) has officially changed it's name to Trg Slobode (Freedom Square) though everyone still uses the old name. There are lots of similar cases, so be on guard and don't put all your trust in maps! Leave a Comment

Trolley in Belgrade by peter_dimov The trams in Belgrade are not so efficient. There are some good bus lines but as a whole all public transport vehicles are very old and not so comfortable to be in. On the other hand, there are some nasty taxi drivers who take you two or three times more money for getting you somewhere. This is a bad thing for Belgrade and we hope that GSP system improves soon.
