 | Republic of Serbia General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 50 | | Kragujevac is a small town in the heart of Serbia, in Sumadija (suma=forest). Sumadija is beautiful in it's hills and green surroundings and you could say that Kragujevac is a jewl in this gorgeus scenery. The first serbian classical gymnasium was built in here sometime during the XIX cetury, and it still is working. Today, Kragujevac is an industrial town, but with so much to offer as a touristic place. Leave a Comment

Village Palic is on the bank of lake Palic and the nearest town is Subotica, just some 10km's away. Palic lake is very nice and popular spot, and has been that way for over hundred years. This is a place where you can have great rest, and yet if you like crowd it's the place to be. Palic becomes very sweet and vivid during 1st May hollidays. There is a big Fair on the bank and people from all over Serbia and many from Hungary come to celebrate Workers day here. The picture shows the water tower built in 1912. You can't miss it. You go straight under it, anfter about 200m's you are the lake. There is also a nice ZOO here. It is very popular and well known. The animals are not in cages but in "natural inhabitance". I am not so sure of that, but still it's nice to see them almost free. Leave a Comment

Religion palyed a great part in Serbian history. It is what kept my people alive during the period under Turkey rulership. It is where the roots of serbian arts are and serbian architecture. Mileseva is one of the most valuable and the famous White Angel fresko is. Leave a Comment

The Sarplaninac (pronounced shar-pla-nee-natz) is an ancient livestock guarding breed from the mountain region of southeastern Serbia, known in Roman times as Illyria. Long time ago I used to have one. Her name was Linda and she was so sweet. When she grow up she became very dangerous for everybody except for us-the family members. I have the fondest memories of her, my sweet, lovely dog. Leave a Comment

Since the territory once belonged to Roman Empire, there are meny testimonials of that epoca in the country. Even couple of Roman emperors came from these areas, like Justinijan for example. The territory of present day Serbia was under the ROMAN EMPIRE for six centuries. During that time the towns of Sirmium, Singidunum, Viminacium, Nais, Ulpiana developed and bridges and roads were built as well as a few imperial palaces and summer houses. By the end of the III and in the first decades of the IV century at the time of Diocletian, Galerian, Licinis and the Great Constantine's reign the magnificent architectonic ensembles were built- Romuliana (Gamzigrad near Zaječar), Mediana (Brzi Brod near Niš) and Justiniana Prima (Cesarean City near Lebane). Sava was born in 1169. He was the son of Stefan Nemanja the Grand Zupan of the Serbs. As a young man, Sava yearned for the spiritual life for which he fled to the Holy Mountain Athos where he was tonsured a monk and with rare zeal lived according to the ascetical rule. Stefan Nemanja followed the example of his son and came to the Holy Mountain where he was tonsured a monk and died as Simeon, the monk. Sava obtained the independence of the Serbian Church from the Byzantine emperor and patriarch and became the first Archbishop of the Serbs. Together with his father, he built the Monastery Hilandar and, after that, many other monasteries, churches and schools throughout the Serbian lands. On two occasions, he made a pilgrimage to the sacred places in the Holy Land. He restored peace between his two brothers who were estranged because of a struggle for power. He restored peace between the Serbs and their neighbors. In establishing the Serbian Church, he was, through that, establishing the Serbian State and culture. He instilled peace between all the Balkan peoples and worked for the benefit of all for which he was loved and respected by all the Balkan peoples. To the Serbian people he gave a Christian soul which did not perish with the collapse of the Serbian State. Sava died in Trnovo, Bulgaria, during the reign of Emperor Asen, having become ill following the Divine Liturgy on the Feast of the Epiphany on 12th January 1236. King Vladislav translated his body to the Milesevo Monastery from which Sinan Pasha removed it and burned it on Vracar in Belgrade, 27th April 1595. We are celebrating Saint Sava day on 27th January. Orthodox church is the oldest Christian church. After Catholic Church separated from it in 1054 (and after Protestants from Catholics), and after Turks occupied most of Orthodox countries, Orthodox Church was organized depended of historical moment. Churches have Patriarch or Archbishop depending of the way they were re-established, during or after Turkish occupation. Countries which had Emperor now have Patriarchs. As the Churches don't recognized the Pope, and they are, in some way independence from each other, "First Among Equals" is Patriarch of Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) Bartholomew. The most powerful, and the biggest, is, of course, Russian Orthodox Church. The basic (and the churches where majority of population belongs to them) churches in their countries are Russian Orthodox Church (Russia, but also basic in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova), Serbian Orthodox Church, Greek Orthodox Church, Cyprus Orthodox Church, Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Romanian Orthodox Church, and Georgian Orthodox Church. Russian Orthodox Church covers all former USSR states except Georgia (autocephalous Orthodox Church) and Armenia (autocephalous Monotheist Church). Serbian Orthodox Church covers all former Yugoslav republics. Almost all Churches have their dioceses where in a countries where basic states have their Diaspora. Patriarch of Constantinople has administration government under Athos, peninsula in Greece. Most of Churches are still using the Old calendar (Julian) so we are celebrating Christmas and New Year 13 day after other Christians do. Leave a Comment
