Liberty bridge (Serbian Cyrillic: Мост слободе, read: Most slobode) is a slim and stylish iron bridge to Sremska Kamenica over Danube. The bridge is located on the same named bridge witch was built on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of its liberation in WWII.
It is a Cable-stayed bridge and main function is motorway and freeway.
Liberty Bridge was opened 23rd October 1981st. It was projected by academic Nikola Hajdin (Serbian Cyrillic: Никола Хајдин), with the help of associate engineer Gojko Nenadović (Serbian Cyrillic: Гојко Ненадовић), Blagoje Zarić (Serbian Cyrillic: Благоје Зарић) and Predrag Želalić (Serbian Cyrillic: Предраг Желалић) in 1977-1978.
It was demolish by NATO bombarded on 3th April 1999. Present Liberty bridge is replica of the old bridge.
The bridge was designed with the aim to fully maintain the look of the old bridge and the bridge to incorporate the usable parts of the old bridge. Bases for design were the Main design from 1978th (author Prof. Nikola Hajdin) and Tender documents. The identically rebuilt bridge is opened to traffic on 11th October 2005 after 2 years of work. Rebuilding the bridge cost the city 40 million euros.
The Bridge consists of a bridge over the Danube River system with inclined cables, orthotropic plate and spans 60 +60 +351(main span) +60 +60 with two access bridges, simple beam composite section spans 60 meters width of the bridge is 27.5 m. The bridge was constructed in the system slanted tie with two pylons. Pylons are 60 meters high, at the distance of 361 meters. There are 48 cables (tie). Length of bridge construction is 1312 m. It built with 32,000 cubic meters of concrete with 2136 tons of reinforcing iron and 9700 tons of steel.
The bridge has six auto lanes (at 3 in both directions) and two pedestrian lane.
The graceful Sloboda (Liberty) Bridge opened in 1981 and carried the 6-lane Novi Sad - Sremska Kamenica road across the River Danube. It is sometimes referred to as the Kamenica Bridge. On 3rd April 1999 the bridge was disabled by three NATO missiles. Fortunately reconstruction of this bridge is finished some 2 years ago (in 2005) and now we have brand new-old bridge. It's almost completely new but look like the same as old one... although it was not so old when it was destroyed. Never mind, lucky me, my house is only 100 m from that bridge and all that construction machines and workers made so much noise. Of course, being so close to bridge, my house was also severely damaged (not destroyed but almost) so I hope that this bridge will not be military target again.
"The Family" is a monument to victims of The Raid, madeof bronze, 4m in height, on gentry made of brick. The monument is piece of Novi Sad sculptor Jovan Soldatovic. In 1992. 4 plates in serbian and hebrew, which give basic information about the event, were placed on the monument along with 60 plates with the names of the killed.
People like to take photos in front of it, even smiling, like my friend Vlada and the guys in the background, whereas I think it's a sad event and maybe it's not the most appropriate thing...
Danube (or Dunav in serbian) is spinbone of Novi sad and divide city on the two parts. One the right side of the river is Novi Sad community in Backa region and on the left side is Petrovaradin, Sremska Kamenica, Fruska Gora in Srem region. Danube always had very important role for the city and residents of Novi sad are simply in love with his river and they made many songs that glorify the river. There are beaches, parks and quays on his bank as well as some very important historical sites and buildings as Petrovaradin fortress is. There has been 3 bridges over river before NATO bombing but all of them finished on the river bed. There are again 3 bridges but one is pontoon bridge… Kamenica bridge still isn’t finished yet (and we hope that they’ll finish it soon).
This would be a must see activity, only if these bridges weren't turned down during the NATO bombing in 1999. I am sorry, but you won't be able to see or cross the river over these bridges. You'll just have to take my word for it when I say they were divine...
Right in front of my house is the magnifican river of Danube, with its logn quay, full of people walking or doing sports, it even has a beach called Štrand, which is the favourite resort of people from Novi Sad during the summer.
Through the trees on this photo you can see the fortress of Petrovaradin.
Do not miss to walk by the riverside, on the beautiful, picturesque promenade full of colourful people and lovely nature. There is a quiet little corner everywhere, and the sight to the fortress of petrovaradin is absolutely beautiful.
Perhaps the most spectaculair sight of Novi Sad is the large bridge across the Danube, which was destroyed by NATO bombs in 1999. In fact, all 3 of Novi Sad's bridges were destroyed, and 2 temporary bridges have been constructed.
It may look a bit weird, but the locals seem to enjoy swimming in the Danube, which is in my opinion not one of the cleaniest rivers I know of, but anyway, they're locals so they probably know whether it's safe or not.
Also the background may look a bit apocaliptic: this is one of the bridges destroyed by the rudiculous NATO bombings.
Bathing at sandy beaches on Danube!Strand,as it it called,is the most beautifull Danube beach. It is situated in Novi Sad.Water is clear becuse ships no longer goes through Novi Sad since NATO bombs destroed all bridges of this nice town.
