St Sava

by JessieLang

St. Sava is the largest Orthodox church in Serbia. It was started in 1935 but abandoned when the war started. The communists didn’t finish it, and construction only resumed in 1980. The outside was complete in 1989, but the interior is still not finished. It is Serbian Orthodox (they split from the Byzantines in the 13th Century) and named for the patron saint of Serbia.

Republic Square

by JessieLang

This is a very pleasant area, with a pedestrians-only street leading off from it. Republic Square has a statue of Prince Mikail in the center , and various interesting buildings, including the National Theater, surround it. The pedestrian street contains shops and restaurants, as well as some craftsmen just displaying their wares along the street (see Picture 4.)

Kalemegdan & Fortress

by JessieLang

The Fortress was built by Justinian in 535, and the oldest part of Belgrade is within its walls. Until the 16th Century, all of Belgrade was inside it. There have been 115 battles here over the centuries, according to our guide: 1456—Christians defeated the Ottomans; 1514—taken by the Ottomans; 1717—Austrians took the fort from the Ottomans; 1739—the Ottomans took it back; and so on… Each wave made renovations, etc.The large Kalemegdan park inside the walls has a classic Balkan house—the upper floor is wider than the ground floor. There is also a Turkish mausoleum with the remains of an 18th Century Pasha. When Kalemegdan was an active fort, the Stambul gate was the most popular with the guards—it was the only one with a fireplace!

visit the picturesque zemun

by hanspeter_W.

Zemun (Serbian Cyrillic: Çåìóí, German: Semlin, Hungarian: Zimony) is a town in Serbia and one of the 17 municipalities which constitute the City of Belgrade, the country's capital. For most of its history, it developed separately from Belgrade, which lies across the Sava river, but the development of New Belgrade in the late 20th century joined them together in a continuous urban area.

life in serbia

by Milesic

i lived in bratunac for a while about 5 years. i still have two sisters over there in the area. when you go there do not go as a tourist always go with some one who is from there. the best things about bratunac other then that it has the most beautifull women, it has very well respected women. unlike here in USA. hard to find them here.... anyways the nights over there in the the summer are amazing a lot of people out in the downtown having a good time dancing drinking and you know just having a good time. its a very peacefull time fresh air and a lot of places to climb and see. cant wait to go back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SKULL TOWER

by kelmck23

A must see when visiting Serbia. Located in the city of Nis. Skull Tower is literally a tower made out of skulls. When the Turks invaded serbia in the late 1800's, they captured 500 srbian heros...chopped off their heads, took out there brains and added them to the tower. I know it sounds morbid, but it is a crazy site to see. I will add photo's soon.
