Smederevo

Smederevo, a fortress on the Danube downstream from Belgrade, was built between 1428 and 1430 during the reign of Despot Djuradj Branković, the last of medieval Serbia's rulers. The fortress encircled by crenelated walls and towers, was for a long time the last bastion against the Turkish assault. The main tower is well preserved and an inscription on it mentions Despot Djuradj and the date of its construction. Smederevo fortress suffered severe damage to its towers and walls during World War II, when a big ammunition depot exploded within its walls in 1941, and from bombing in 1944.

The ancient Roman town Nais, present-day Niš, was an important frontier fortress of the Roman Empire. It was there that the Emperor Constantine was born. A superb bronze head of the Emperor, discovered in Niš, is now in the National Museum in Belgrade. The remains of the Roman summer resort Mediana, with the foundations of villas, mosaics and marble figures, have been unearthed in the vicinity of Niš. A 6th century Byzantine tomb, discovered in the city, includes well-preserved frescoes with zoomorphic and floral motifs.

Ceremošnja is a cave through which a stream (Strugarski potok) flows. The length of the cave is 775.5 metres, of which 431 metres are accessible to visitors. Close to the cave, there is a motel from which the visitors can descend to the cave's entrance, go along the underground stream and reach the cave's biggest hall, the so-called Arena, the most beautiful one in Serbia's karst region. Its domed ceiling is lined with white crystal calcite and adorned by many stalactites and transparent curtains and folds. Tours: Permanent guide service is available. Visiting hours: 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. from April 1 to October 31 and by prior appointment in winter.

Šara (Šar-planina) - a unique recreational complex at an altitude of 900 to 2,500 m.Climatic conditions, snow from November to May, professional and amateur ski trails and skiing slopes, by their adequate inclinations, high quality and long-term snow cover, rank Brezovica among the best winter resorts.Tourist and cultural attractions within a circle of 100 km include the cities of Prizren, Peć and Priština, and such cultural and historical attractions as the Gračanica and Dečani Serbian Orthodox monasteries of immense cultural and historical significance, now endangered. All that is now at the teritory of Kosovo, not very recommended to go there due to permanent conflicts. :-(

Divčibare, a well-known mountain resort is situated on Mt.Maljen, south-east of Valjevo, at the altitude of 980 m.The local climate is temperate and the locality abounds in flora and fauns, springs and streams, not to mention a fine landscape and its favourable geographical position. The Djerdap National Park stretches along the right bank of the Danube River from Golubački grad to the dam near Sip. The main feature and attraction of the Djerdap National Park's natural beauty is the Djerdap gorge - the famous Iron Gate - the grandiose gateway through the southern slopes of the Carpathian mountains where the longest and biggest river accumulation in ex-Yugoslavia is located.The Djerdap gorge, which is some 100 kilometers long (from Golubac to Tekija), is actually a compound river valley made up of four gorges (Gornja klisura, Gospodjin vir, Veliki and Mali kazan and Sipska klisura), separated from each other by ravines. In Gospodjin vir, one of the greatest river depths in the world has been measured (82 m). It is surrounded by mountain peaks. For the flat plains of Vojvodina, Fruška Gora is an exceptional gift of nature and its greatest decoration. This low mountain which hugs the banks of the Danube River. Its highest park Crveni Cot is 539 meters above sea level. The valleys of Fruška Gora are covered with meadows and grain fields, vineyards and orchardsspread over its slopes and glades while its higher parts, above 300 meters, are covered by dense deciduous forests. The greatest concentration of linden trees in Europe is in this park, which giving it its distinctive characteristic. About 700 species of medicinal herbs can be found here. Animal life includes deer, mouflons, boar, lynx and marten.The numerous monasteries with their frescoes and libraries situated on picturesque glades on the forest covered mountain represent monuments of exceptional value and beauty (see my Novi Sad page, off the beaten path).
