Vrsac Things to Do

  • Sterijin muzej

One of the most famous citizens of Vršac is Jovan Sterija Popović (1806-1856), considered to be the father of Serbian drama. The house where he lived and worked was turned into a museum in 2012. The rooms on the upper floor of the house have been enriched with the writer's original furniture, including his desk and chair, especially made for...

  • Nikolajevska crkva

St Nicholas Church (Nikolajevska crkva) was built on the site of an older church dedicated to the same Saint. This one was finished in 1785, although its ornaments were completed in 1805. Several well-known artists worked on it - Nikola Neskovic (10 icons), Pavel Djurkovic (iconostasis), Simeon Jaksic, Mihajlo Popovic (wall paintings) and Paja...

  • Rumunska crkva

This yellow and red Romanian Church was built between 1911 and 1913, thanks to a number of donors, according to the plans of Dimitrije Boitar. The temple was decorated by painter Virgil Simonesku, sculptors Nistor and Joseph Bosiok and stone cutter Joan Voina. The temple is dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord.

  • Gradska kuc'a

The Town Hall (Gradska kuc'a) dominates the lovely pedestrianised central area.It was built in 1732.

  • Great Cross

This "Great Cross" is situated on one of the central Vrsacs squares. I don't know much about it (should read what is writen on it next time I visit Vrsac) but I suppose that's erected somewhere in late 18th or early 19th century.

  • Old facades

Vrsac has well perserved old town with many representative building from 18th, 19th and early 20th century. Most of them don't have historical importance but is very beautifull and represent wellness of former Vrsacs resident.

  • Kibicfenster

This kind of windows on the photo (third from the right) is very common for Vrsac and is one of the towns symbols. Most of old houses has at least one of that kind of windows. There is very practical reason for having that windows, you can check what's going on on the both side of street without opening window at all, very practical on cold winter...

  • Sterijinas house

Jovan Sterija Popovic is the most eminent person born in Vrsac and most beloved son of this town. His expression "Vrsac-lepa varos" (Vrsac, a beautifull town) I took for my title page for this town as well. He was born in 1806 in this town and after studies in Vrsac, Sremski krlovci, timisoara, Budapest and Kazmerek he went back here and spent most...

  • The Palace of Eparchy (Vladicanski dvor)

The Palace of Eparchy or Bishops Court is seat of Serbian Ortodox Bishops of "serbian" Banat. Why "serbian"? Well, biger part of Banat is part of Romania and there, in Timisoara, is another seat of Serbian Ortodox Bishops together with another Serbian Ortodox cathedral for that "romanian" part of Banat. This Building on the photo was build from...

  • Serbian Ortodox cathedral (Saborna...

Serbian Ortodox cathedral (Saborna or Nikolajevska crkva) dedicated to St. Nicholas built in classicist style was finish in 1785. Well, as most others classicist churches of Vojvodina there is still evident strong baroque influence. Church has one nave and is richly decorated inside. Unfortunatelly when I was in Vrsac last time (and when I made...

  • City Hall (Magistrat)-old part

Older part of City Hall actually consist of two houses (Lotics house and Andjelkovics house) built during 18th century in classicist style. Building represent really fine examples of provincial classicism of Habsburgs Monarchy.

  • City Hall (Magistrat)-new part

The City Hall or Magistrat is one of the landmarks of the town centre and consisting of three buildings. Here on this pictures you could see the newest part of it all, so-called "goticko zdanje" built in 1860. in neo-gothic style. Some people don't like the colour sheme that town government choose for this building but, at my personal opinion, it...

  • Kula

The Tower of Vrsac is the symbol of the town. It's the 1st thing you'll see when approaching Vrsac. The Tower stands at the top of the 399m-high hill overlooking the town, and is in fact a remnant of the military-strategic fortress, most probably built in the mid-15th century.

  • Katedrala

St Gerhard's Roman Catholic Church (Katedrala Svetog Gerharda) is 1 of the most monumental buildings in the town. When you see it, you'll know what I mean.It was built between 1860 and 1863 on the place of a former church with the same name. The architect was from Vienna. The church, with its rich decoration and high bell-towers, is as impressive...

  • Vladicanski Dvor

One of the most beautiful buildings here is definitely the palace-like Eparchy Court (Vladicanski dvor). U glavnom bulevaru Žarka Zrenjanina, nedaleko od katoličke Katedrale, predivan Engleski Pab, sa velikom paletom domaćih i uvoznih piva. Odličan večernji provod, a najbolji četvrtkom!

This is one of the most important monasteries in southeastern Banat. It was founded in the 15th century by Jovan Branković.

In the church dedicated to St. John the Baptist you can see the remains of frescoes from the 18th century. In the treasury, there are valuable manuscripts, printed books and the paintings of famous painters such as Jovan Popovic from Opovo, Johan Tobias Kaergling, Arsenije Petrovic or Pavel Djurkovic. It is believed that the icon brought from Mount Athos in 1803 has some miraculous powers.
