Ma Petite Auberge Bill by LoriPori While we were staying here in Castellane , we went out for dinner at the MA PETITE AUBERGE. From what I can remember, the restaurant was in a garden setting with casual patio tables. I still have the bill in my scrapbook and the meals for four persons came to 218 French francs (1 franc =.20 or $43.60CDN). Leave a Comment

Restaurant Engel in Kuessnacht am Rigi by globetrott, 4 more photos Restaurant Engel in Kuessnacht am Rigi is a place I can highly recommend for various reasons : First of all it is a lovely half-timbered house with a long history dating back to the 14th century. It was also the place, where the "Eidgenossen" had their meeting first in 1424 and afterwards several times again untill 1712 A.D., so it was some sort of a "parliament" of the new union of the swiss counties (Kantone). In October 7th, 1797 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent the night in the hotel. Take a look at my pictures , this hotel has a really beautiful architecture and great decorations under the roof !
Restaurant Engel is a really beautiful old wooden building with cosy hotel-rooms and a great restaurant, with quite high prices. In general eating in a restaurant is quite expensive in Switzerland, one of the cheapest dishes I found on the menu was a porc-Cordon-bleu with french fries and vegetables for 28 sfr / 18 Euros !! A very fine 6-course-menu is available for 94 sfr / 62 Euros a simple pumpkin-soup with curry wass 10 sfr / 6,50 Euros Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$41 and up » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: CH-6403 Kuessnacht am Rigi / Hauptplatz 1Phone: (041) 850 92 17Directions: Restaurant Engel is in the very centre of Kuessnacht am Rigi, at the round-about, where you can go to the lake and the church of the village !Website: www.engel-kuessnacht.ch Other Contact: Fax (041) 850 9218

The full Monty Scottish breakfast by sourbugger The Scottish Breakfast... I recently described on a forum (and got a fair bit of flak for it) French food as an attempt "to make any old disease ridden rat taste nice". Whilst there was some jesting going on then it seems to me that Scottish cusine is just the opposite. You begin with good fresh ingredients like meat, potatoes or vegatable and contrive to make them totally inedible. Breakfast is a good case in point. At a B&B in Inverness we ordered "Home made porridge" from the nice landlady. A big bowl duly arrived, but we refused to eat it as it was laden with salt - it tasted awful. The landlady became frosty at that point and took the dishes away with the words "Well that's the way we like it here." After we left (my wife still without breakfast inside her) we pulled into a cafe. She ordered some black pudding. Again it arrived, it was about the size of a average model spaceship - and deep fried in batter. This was probably not one of the better days of our married life. On the other hand a good Scottish Breakfast CAN be the best meal in the world - even if you do risk a heart attack directly after consuming it. Leave a Comment Theme: Breakfast

Cafe Baum by sourbugger Oldest or Second oldest ? There appears to be some confusion about whether this place is the oldest (still operating) coffeehouse in the world, or the second oldest. It's certainly not the oldest restaurant - as a place in China (Hangzhou I think) beats it by only a couple of thousand years. This place however is however well worth the visit : a place to argue witha good friends in the tradition of former customers like Goethe, Lessing, Liszt, Wagner and Schumann. I would love to be a fly on the wall of all four of those acually got around a cappuchino at the same time ! The coffee is well made, and well priced. Despite being used by tour companies on their "see Leipzig" excursions the place does not seem to rely on its past glories for trade.
Try some of the cakes alongside you caffine fix - especially the chocolate moouse cake Leave a Comment

This IS an Aberdeen Angus by sourbugger Aberdeen Angus steak houses - they only seem to be frequented by tourists who are drawn in by the bright signs. There are a surprising number of them in London (Aberdeen Angus steakhouses that is, not tourists). Perhaps because it is a chain they presume there is some sort of quality control associated with being part of a chain. I ate in one years ago and I believe they are still terrible - cold grisly meat and waitresses to match. The picture is of a prime Aberdeen Angus - I have no idea what animal actually arrives on your plate. P.S for a laugh look up the reviews of these places in www.londonrestaurantreviews.co.uk I suppose you could think of it as a retro 70's experience : a kind of ironic theme restaurant, but it is probably better to eat somewhere more nutricious - McDonalds ?

Little venice, London by sourbugger This could be Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Rome... or little venice in London The setting of this cafe on the Edgware road is unmissable, as it is perched on a bridge over the Regent's canal near little Venice. The place has a distinctly continental flavour - but at London Prices. Scambled egg on toast will set you back nearly 4 quid, and a glass of champers a fiver. The view along the stretch of canal looking towards little venice is however worth the extra few bob involved. Lunches looked light and well prepared, witha good range of other snacks - panini, salads , pasta and omelettes all available. Authentic Essex architecture by sourbugger High Jinx in the hotel next door Just 2 minutes from the terminal building at Stansted Airport in deepest Essex is the new Radission hotel, where they have created a kind of up-market food-court in the Atrium around a central bar, with one rather special feature. The restaurants themselves consist of NY style steakhouse an Italian and a Spanish Tapas bar. All a very trendy, and whilst not exactly cheap, not a rip-off either. Sample menus can be found below. So, the special feature ? This place is about people watching in the truest sense, well a beautiful individual anyway : the atrium is dominated by a Las-Vegas style 'Wine-tower'. The 13 meter high contraption is loaded with thousands of bottles of wine, encased in a glass shell. When you order a bottle an 'Wine Angel', although I prefer 'Wine Babe', glides up on a system of acrobatic pullies to retireve your desired bottle. The apparatus was originally developed for the show at the Millenium dome - at least they have found a good use for it now. Very theatrical, very Las Vegas, very Kitsch - but great fun. The Sample menus : New York Grill Bar: Starter: Classic Caesar Salad 4.50 pounds Main: Rib Eye Steak (10oz) 15.95 pounds Desert: New York Chocolate Brownie 4.50 pounds TaPaell'Ya: Typical Tapas price: 3.75 pounds Filini: Expect to pay around 7.50 - 9 pounds for a pizza or pasta dish Breakfast is an amazing buffet of 90 different choices and is an event in itself (dont miss out on the five minute boiled eggs - perfection.) Best Fish and Chips in Ireland ? by sourbugger This place is a Galway institution. It has a kind of double identity, as one side is a take away with wooden benches where you have to squash on with everyone else. The other side is like a proper restaurant with a more extensive repertoire. I would stick to the fast food side for atmosphere. The place is decorated with a mish-mash of fishing stuff and clipping from mags / newspapers about the place. Update : August 2004. recently shared an excellent meal with some guests from Boston. They seem quite amazed at the alcohol arrangements : unless you had wine, you had to walk next door to the Spanish arch hotel and take your drinks back from there - seemed sensible to me !
Cod and chips is the obvious choice and excellent, but it also a good chance to try out some more unusual fish that you don't see everyday in chippies (or chippers as the Irish call them) Leave a Comment Theme: SeafoodPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: As you approach down Shop street you should be able to smell the enticing aroma
