 | Europe Restaurants | Tips 21 - 30 of 222 | | The main railway station in Prague is a complete dump, but this little oasis in the old part of the station is a wonderful refuge of calm. The domed ceiling to what was the booking hall is a masterpiece of Art Noveau - trying to rival any of the other cathedrals to transport of central Europe. The booking offices are now converted to shops, but you still sit having a cheap coffee (14 Kr last time I was here) by the iron ballastrades and imagine you are waiting to catch a train in the 1920's to Milan, Vienna, Budapest...
If she is still working there the tall waitress in the maid outfit is an absolute babe - and she knows it. Avoid late evening as the underpasses are a bit dodgy.

The cupboard was indeed full... Great name eh ? Although only starting out as a truck stop, this company has been going for some 25 years and has consistently been able to deliver food that is just a cut above the normal standard of fare you would expect at a service station in Ireland or the UK. It is very welcoming of families and the service areas are smart and packed with useful amenities - like good bogs ! The one on the main N4 road just before the fork of the N4 and N6 is the original (Moyvalley), and most well known of the half-dozen or so restaurants in the chain. Favorite Dish: I defy you not to read the breakfast menu and not end up with saliva in you mouth... The classic breakfast of pork sausages, bacon, Loughnane's black and white pudding and barn fresh free range eggs Mother Hubbard's potato cake with baked beans and bacon Scrambled free range egg with grilled tomato and Mother Hubbard's potato cake (V) All of the above served with tea or coffee and brown bread or toast Toasted soda bread filled with pork sausages and bacon. Amazing decor - and all for sale ! This is some coffeeshop - anywhere else it would be twice the price and tourist 'hot-spot'. It's basically a cafe set up on the top floor of a large shop selling furniture, tiles, heaters lamps etc. The Main part of the shop is converted from a former 'Sack store' as the name suggest where nerchandise was held before being transferred to the nearby port. The Cafe is stuffed with wooden archways, carvings, funky table, leather sofas, ornaments and all sorts of other stuff - much of it for sale. It is light and airy with good coffee and wine. The food is mainly italian and "brunchish". They do an excellent (if relatively expensive) bangers and mash that is the best I've had in a long time. Open open during the day and on Sunday afternoons. If this place was in London, it would be packed to the gunnels, twice the price, and in every guidebook going.

I love these folks, I really do. They could not have made me feel more welcome, valued and looked after me. That was just the service. The food? Magnifique! La Medina is 1 of 5 different themed restaurants created by 2 geniuses named Dominica Colaianni and Olivier Felmann. Many people come by to laugh at some of the strange English translations on their outside menu board, but don’t stay to savour the wonderfully prepared food which makes this one of the best restaurants in Europe. So why Superheroes? I arrived at the restaurant quite late and in very casual clothes and boots. The restaurant next door refused to serve me. The waiter here at La Medina never blinked and greeted me like an old friend. Although cold outside, they agreed to seat me outside and my table was made up like I was royalty in a flash (pictured). My food was brought to me and was not only artful; it tasted out of this world and filled me up as well. The beer was cold and the red wine delicious. If you only eat in one restaurant in Luxembourg, dine here. The inside (warmer) is also beautifully decorated and designed. Well done La Medina folks! Open 12pm-2pm and 7pm-11pm Monday - Saturday. Their hours and days do sometimes change.
I had the ‘La dégustation de brick terre et mer’ starter which has a weird translation of ‘Mixed off meat and sea food bricks’ on their menu. Sound bad, tastes heavenly. For the main meal I had the ‘Mixed grill du jour’ with some beer and house red wine. It was so good I nearly passed out. In my educated and informed opinion, this has to be this restaurant has the ruddest staff in Europe. They were absolutely rude, angry and aggressive with me on more than one occasion. I didn’t even eat here and I highly recommend you not eat here either. I tried to gat a table on their empty terrace one night and they looked at me like I was a piece of rubbish. After giving me a dirty look (2 of them together) they told me after a long apuse that all the tables were reserved. I went next door to the absolutely wonderful LA MEDINA and was greeted like royalty. Over the next hour and a half I noticed no one sat at the ‘reserved’ tables. Just look at the first picture. Do you see anyone sitting at any tables? Lying bastards. The next day I went inside the building that houses this restaurant to use the toilets. A waiter CHASED me and shouted at me all the way in. I had to literally shut and lock the door to get away from him. When I came out he absolutelt unleashed a torrent of abuse at me. The though that I might be someone wanting to eat here obviously never occurred to him. DAO’s RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT EAT HERE!

IT IS NOT A TART! It’s a pudding! If you cannot get to Bakewell, let Bakewell come to you. Please read on. This is a nice little shop that also serves as a tea room and gift shop. You can select from a huge variety of cakes and puddings, not just the famous ones. They also have gourmet coffees, teas, chocolates and other goodies. Throw in a few handicrafts and you have a place worth having a peek at. They also ship famous Bakewell Puddings – worldwide. If you don’t believe me, go to the town Post Office at 5 o’clock! Their website listed below has more information, prices and availability. Bon Appétit! Leave a Comment

Who ate all the pies ? I did - they were great This has been an eating house for centuries. The cellar is all candlelit and romantic and the main floor is all wooden tables, wooden floors and blackboards. The Kitchen is upstairs, and the serving staff certainly get a workout up and downstairs in their wonderfully old-fashioned attire. We often try to get a table in the early evening when they have a "beat the Clock" promotion - so a set two couse meal at say 6.30 pm only costs 6 pounds 30 plus another quid.. Reckon on 20-25 pounds a head at other times.
The game pie is fantastic. Proper crust and deep filled with gravy smothering at least three types of game. Many of the other pies are great too, especially the ones that use beer. The rest of the food is italian / french / spanish stuff - all cooked well. The only drawback is the sweet trolley which is a bit on the pricey side. You didn't really believe that did you? Lots of places sell the most disgusting grease covered conglomorations your stomach will ever meet. Favorite Dish: Chips when your drunk - remember if you want to look like a northerner put gravy or mushy peas on them. If you want to look like a southerner put tomato sauce on them. If you want to look like a local put vomit on them. NB for non-Britons : Mushy peas are a disgusting item which looks like guacamole or child-sick turned green depending upon your point of view. A pearl of an aphrodisiac In the Corner of the Harrods Food Hall, a tourist site in itself stands the Oyster bar. You sit up on high stools as the food is freshly prepared before you. It's not supriseingly a tad on the expensive side, but if you share half-a-dozen (beginning at about 12 pounds) you can think of it as an extravagent starter and then go on elsewhere. Leave a Comment
