L’ORANCHELLO: THE RUDDEST RESTAURANT IN EUROPE

by DAO

In my educated and informed opinion, this has to be this restaurant has the ruddest staff in Europe. They were absolutely rude, angry and aggressive with me on more than one occasion. I didn’t even eat here and I highly recommend you not eat here either. I tried to gat a table on their empty terrace one night and they looked at me like I was a piece of rubbish. After giving me a dirty look (2 of them together) they told me after a long apuse that all the tables were reserved. I went next door to the absolutely wonderful LA MEDINA and was greeted like royalty. Over the next hour and a half I noticed no one sat at the ‘reserved’ tables. Just look at the first picture. Do you see anyone sitting at any tables? Lying bastards. The next day I went inside the building that houses this restaurant to use the toilets. A waiter CHASED me and shouted at me all the way in. I had to literally shut...

AEOLUS (SANTORINI, GREECE): TAVERNA OF THE WINDS

by DAO

I first came across this place on my first (of many) scooter rides across Santorini. Aeolus was the master of the winds in Greek mythology and this place is very well named! Perched on the cliffs above Akrotiri, it actually has the best Caldera views on the island of Santorini. Not only do they have a great location, the food is good and you can even rent a room from them. The business is owned by Litsa & Babis Darzentas and is definitely worth at least a cup of coffee just for the views. I had the best omelette ever. It had cheese and sun dried tomatoes with olives in it. Delicious. They do a range of meals including traditional Greek grills. The only downside is you have to drive here – so no sampling of the wines! You could stay here of course. They also have the distinction of having the cleanest toilets on the island. Really impressed. Photos are available. An omelette with sun...

NIKI RESTAURANT - SANTORINI, GREECE: TOP OF THE HILL WITHOUT THE (BIG) BILL

by DAO

On an island full of good restaurants, this place is pretty special. Niki has extraordinary views over the Caldera, has wonderful food, actually fills you up with good sized portions – and does not a require a loan from a bank to pay for it. They have been here since 1965 and must be doing something right. I found their menu prices to be lees than the other Caldera view restaurants when I was scouting out a place for that last night meal. Despite their prices, their food looked fresh and they staff gave me a business card and invited me back. We went, we saw, we ordered and we ate. We ate very well! Totally impressed. We sat on the rooftop (they have tables inside) and feasted. The starting salads were very big. Dinner was beautiful. So why the great views without the price? Well, I didn’t order wine. I had some reasonably priced large beers. The wine was expensive, so there you go. Also...

MOMA'S HOUSE: MOMA LOVES YOU !

by DAO

You love your Mama’s cooking don’t you? Just like at home, Mama will cook you great meals and not charge you a fortune to eat well. Open all day and until Midnight, Mama’s kitchen serves up great Greek dishes. This great restaurant even hosted a VT Euromeeting meal in 2007. Sitting outside in a comfortable garden, it is located right in the heart of Fira town centre. Dishes vary between meat, seafood and vegetarian options. My party enjoyed every bite of their salads, main courses, drinks and a big hug from Mama (pictured). Breakfast is more of an American/British fare with eggs, bacon, pancakes etc. Even steak. Lunch and dinner is more Mediterranean and downright Greek. Souvlaki, Moussaka and the traditional Baklava will leave your mouth saying ‘Ahhhhh’. I had a stuffed pork dish that tasted wonderful. In terms of price, quality and friendliness you must put Mama’s House on your dinning...

A TASCA: PORT SIDE IN PORTUGAL

by DAO

Yes, this place is a little touristy and you could probably find a slightly cheaper restaurant. Having said that, A Tasca is still worth a visit and a good meal if you are on the Algarve. It literally sits right on top of the port in Sagres and you can enjoy a great meal on their large terrace looking out towards the ocean. They serve seafood caught by local fishing boats and it’s all cooked or grilled to perfection. Some of the dishes are a bit of a mouthful like the giant prawns (shrimp) pictured. Their house wines are from the ‘DAO’ Region of Portugal, so it just cannot get any better. You receive good portions of great food at A Tasca. The service is slightly slow, but polite enough. In addition to many types of grilled fish, they also do smaller tapas dishes, squid kebabs and stews. Please note: They are open during the Winter, but closed on Wednesdays. I had the grilled sardines...

Lunch: Save money and time

by Maryimelda

All over Europe you will find wonderful ways of eating lunch for little cost. There are many different lunch eateries, street vendors etc where you can get a good bargain lunch which will more than keep body and soul together until dinner time. There will usually be a fresh fruit market around or at least fresh fruit to be had from Street vendors and mini marts as well, so there's no need to go hungry. In many countries, your hotel tariff will include breakfast (often times a buffet). Eat up big and you will only need a light lunch.

Plat du Jour: Affordable Eating

by Maryimelda

When dining out on a budget in Europe, you will find that many of the restaurants in most destinations will feature a "Plat du Jour" or a special set menu which may have two or three courses for a reasonable price. Restaurants in most countries are bound by law to have their menus on display outside so that you know prices etc before you enter. A good tip to remember is that you will often find a basket of bread or breadsticks, etc. on the table when you sit down. In many places (especially in Germany) this bread is not complimentary. You will be charged for whatever you eat.

LOS TORILES: TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS

by DAO

This is a fantastic little gem of a restaurant that many people walk right past. Don’t pass up your opportunity to enjoy fantastic traditional Andalusian food. It has a cosy and interesting interior filled with many local artefacts, posters from bull fights and even a few ribbons awarded to prize bulls. The fantastic waiter clad in a tuxedo invited me in and made me feel very welcome. He actually recommended that I try some typical Andalusian dishes. What a great result! I enjoyed Gazpacho as my starter. This cold, tomato based vegetable soup, is served with egg and vegetables cut into small pieces. Add as much or as little as you like to make a heartier dish. I then ordered the Ragoût de Toro a la Flamenca (Bull meat ragoût Andalusian style). Wow! This was so good I did consider licking my plate to get every drop of the fantastic sauce. Los Toriles serves several typical Andalusian...

YATAI (ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND): SUPER SUSHI

by DAO

I found Scotland’s best restaurant entirely by accident. I was walking around and was invited by the fantastic smells as I walked along the street. When I went in I was greeted by the owner and head chef, John Jones. He explained that Yatai are open air food stalls in Japan where work colleagues and friends gather for food and drinks. The restaurant is small and intimate and the staff really take pride in their job. Every dish is a creation of a totally great food explosion with reasonably sized portions. The menu is large, varied and has something for everyone. Where to many trendy restaurants try the minimalist art approach; Yatai feeds you mouth watering meals. Make sure you BOOK IN ADVANCE. John did speak to me when I found his fantastic restaurant, but he was fully booked for the night! Also, if you have never tried sushi, you will forever be disappointed in other sushi restaurants...

PRZYSMAK STAROPOLSKI (Krakow, Poland): 24-HOUR FLAME GRILLED SAUSAGES

by DAO

Absolute heaven! This nice outdoor restaurant flame grills sausages, chicken and ribs 24 hours a day! Of course they serve beer as well. This is an amazing place. They have an indoor full service restaurant that operates normal hours. Outside the nice grill guys will keep you feed and watered no matter what time you show up. It's a great place for breakfast. The prices are cheap and the food delicious. It is right at the front of the castle so it is easy to find as well. Fast, delicious, flame grilled and cheap. What more could you want from one of the best snack bars in Europe? And you do get service with a smaile. Grilled sausage, sauerkraut, bread, mustard, ketchup and a cold beer!
