Mr Wu's , London: X is for x-marks the spot for some quick chinese

by sourbugger

I must admit I don't know if the owner of Mr Wu's is actually called Mr Wu, but you will always find him busying himself around the goldmine in Wardour Street known as Mr Wu's - and you will always find him with a large mug of steaming hot (English) Tea in his hand. This Chinese buffet has a loyal following, and at less than a fiver it means you can fill up for virtually nothing. The range of buffet items is a little limited but the quick turnover always means huge dishes are coming out of the kitchens to help replenish the starving hoards. You may well have to queue to get in,queue to get to the buffet and queue to pay - and you must pay in cash as well.I had to (of course) add the lyrics from the famous George Formby Song for you enjoyment...Mr. Wu no longer has a laundry. Sad to say the business was flop.He shouted 'what a hope' as he chewed a bar of soapAnd then put up the shutters of...

Supermac's in Ireland: T is for Triumphing over Mucky dee's

by sourbugger

McDonald's look out This chain of fast food places wipes the floor with Maccy Dee's in Ireland. They look very similar inside and out to Mc'Donalds but serve proper chips rather than those silly fries. They also do curry sauce and a garlic dip to put on them. Each outlet may have one item that it does only there. I especially like the steak sandwich in Ballinasloe. Often open very late - so good for some late night tucker after the pubs. Got to be the Lunch box with good fried chicken & proper chips. If i'm feeling like a good pig out on fast food I often can't resist having garlic dip and cheese on top as well.

Aberdeen Angus steakhouses: U is for Under no circumstances eat here in London

by sourbugger

Aberdeen Angus steak houses - they only seem to be frequented by tourists who are drawn in by the bright signs. There are a surprising number of them in London (Aberdeen Angus steakhouses that is, not tourists).Perhaps because it is a chain they presume there is some sort of quality control associated with being part of a chain.I ate in one years ago and I believe they are still terrible - cold grisly meat and waitresses to match. The picture is of a prime Aberdeen Angus - I have no idea what animal actually arrives on your plate.P.S for a laugh look up the reviews of these places in www.londonrestaurantreviews.co.ukI suppose you could think of it as a retro 70's experience : a kind of ironic theme restaurant, but it is probably better to eatsomewhere more nutricious - McDonalds ? free mints on the counter

found all over the UK: Q is for Quick food at its best : fish and chips

by sourbugger

Praise be to cod ! Thre are 10 Fish and chip shops for every McDonalds in the United Kingdom. Finding a good one is however something of a problem as there are no real 'chains' where the quality is uniform. The only exception to this rule is Harry Ramsdens. So, what advice can I give ?1) Always look for places with a queue - the same advice on eating places the world over.2) Avoid places that do sit-down meals as they are trying to do two jobs at once - the exception to this are places like Whitby in Yorkshire where it is basically all they serve.3) Avoid places on the High streets - their customers change too often and there they don't care about them so much.4) Avoid places (in general) with silly puns in their names - e.g Beale's Plaice in Eastenders! Having said that one of my favourite chippies is called "The Codfather"5) Avoid places cover in union jacks (I don't know why this works...

Brown's pie shop : Sourbuggers fav rest. Lincs UK: K is for no Ketchup around here

by sourbugger

Who ate all the pies ? I did - they were great This has been an eating house for centuries. The cellar is all candlelit and romantic and the main floor is all wooden tables, wooden floors and blackboards. The Kitchen is upstairs, and the serving staff certainly get a workout up and downstairs in their wonderfully old-fashioned attire. We often try to get a table in the early evening when they have a "beat the Clock" promotion - so a set two couse meal at say 6.30 pm only costs 6 pounds 30 plus another quid.. Reckon on 20-25 pounds a head at other times. The game pie is fantastic. Proper crust and deep filled with gravy smothering at least three types of game. Many of the other pies are great too, especially the ones that use beer. The rest of the food is italian / french / spanish stuff - all cooked well. The only drawback is the sweet trolley which is a bit on the pricey side.

The Sack Store, Boston, Lincs UK: L is for Leather couches in the Sack Store

by sourbugger

Amazing decor - and all for sale ! This is some coffeeshop - anywhere else it would be twice the price and tourist 'hot-spot'.It's basically a cafe set up on the top floor of a large shop selling furniture, tiles, heaters lamps etc. The Main part of the shop is converted from a former 'Sack store' as the name suggest where nerchandise was held before being transferred to the nearby port. The Cafe is stuffed with wooden archways, carvings, funky table, leather sofas, ornaments and all sorts of other stuff - much of it for sale.It is light and airy with good coffee and wine. The food is mainly italian and "brunchish". They do an excellent (if relatively expensive) bangers and mash that is the best I've had in a long time.Open open during the day and on Sunday afternoons. If this place was in London, it would be packed to the gunnels, twice the price, and in every guidebook going. bangers &...

The curries of Birmingham, UK: J is for Jalfrezi is out, Get a Balti

by sourbugger

All mixed up in a bucket please Birmingham is one of the places that lays claim to inventing that most English of dishes : the Balti. For those of you have not experienced this culinary delight ( the word literally means 'Bucket' ) it is usually served in a stainless steel bowl with a Nann bread on the side. Many people like to order rice with it as well to soak up the wonderful juices.it was developed in the UK by Indian restaurants - and is totally unknown in India. It is however evolved from (so I am informed by a friend of mine who owns a Balti House) from certain dishes that can be found in more mountainous areas of india. There are so many places that specialise in baltis now - an area of Birmingham has developed as the 'Balti Mile' or 'Balti Triangle'.Essentially it is around the Sparkbrook area and Ladypool road inparticular.A cheaper alternative is to go to Selly Oak (useful local...

Foodcourt, SAS Radisson, Stansted airport, UK: W is for Wine tower babes at Stansted

by sourbugger

High Jinx in the hotel next door Just 2 minutes from the terminal building at Stansted Airport in deepest Essex is the new Radission hotel, where they have created a kind of up-market food-court in the Atrium around a central bar, with one rather special feature. The restaurants themselves consist of NY style steakhouse an Italian and a Spanish Tapas bar. All a very trendy, and whilst not exactly cheap, not a rip-off either. Sample menus can be found below. So, the special feature ? This place is about people watching in the truest sense, well a beautiful individual anyway : the atrium is dominated by a Las-Vegas style 'Wine-tower'.The 13 meter high contraption is loaded with thousands of bottles of wine, encased in a glass shell. When you order a bottle an 'Wine Angel', although I prefer 'Wine Babe', glides up on a system of acrobatic pullies to retireve your desired bottle. The apparatus...

Rupail, Newcastle upon tyne: R is for Rupali - the hottest curry on the planet

by sourbugger

A Newcastle institution Rupali is a most definetely a Newcastle institution. The location on Bigg market makes it very central, and the food is spicy, cheap and cheerful. This in itself would make it worth visiting, but the self-promotion of this curry emporium is a wonder to behold. Even Richard Branson (the master of that dark art of promotion)would be impressed. The 'Lord' who owns it (he bought the title) has put together a dish that he call 'curry hell'. It claims to be the hottest in the world. If you eat it - it's free, and if you can't, it's still only seven quid. The place is also frequently mentioned ' Viz' the Newcastle adult comic , that now has followers all over the would who delight in seeing the Fat slags, Sid the Sexist, Roger Mellie and Buster and his unfeasibly large testicles every month. The restaurant also organised the 'longest takeaway' in the world - as explained...

Any B & B or hotel: E is for the Escotic Breakfast

by sourbugger

The Scottish Breakfast... I recently described on a forum (and got a fair bit of flak for it) French food as an attempt "to make any old disease ridden rat taste nice". Whilst there was some jesting going on then it seems to me that Scottish cusine is just the opposite. You begin with good fresh ingredients like meat, potatoes or vegatable and contrive to make them totally inedible.Breakfast is a good case in point. At a B&B in Inverness we ordered "Home made porridge" from the nice landlady. A big bowl duly arrived, but we refused to eat it as it was laden with salt - it tasted awful. The landlady became frosty at that point and took the dishes away with the words "Well that's the way we like it here." After we left (my wife still without breakfast inside her) we pulled into a cafe. She ordered some black pudding. Again it arrived, it was about the size of a average model spaceship -...
