Stinker meeting people on the train by Mique I'm not sure whether this is true in the more touristy time of year but during my travels around i've been approached so often by people who wanted to practise their english. And on more then one occasion those people made sure i got on the right train or bus or made sure someone else took care of that. Although once i got on the wrong train and in the complete wrong direction. Which makes for an interesting story now but at that time wasn't so funny when the lights fell out at the station and i was standing on a completely dark platform which was just a strip of concrete between to tracks... Home made sarmale by Mique I love romanian food. Things like a good ciorba de fasole (beansoup), zacusca and most of all sarmale. Unfortunately expecially sarmale is very hard to find in restaurants. The best way is if someone's mum has made it. Sarmale with Smantana (cream) is my absolute favorite of the romanian cuisine so far. Though the ciorba's make a great second. Except for ciorba de burta (tripe soup). I've been given that one a miss. Maybe unfairly so but i don't think my mind can stomach that... Leave a Comment

Folk concert in Alba Iulia by Mique On the 1st of december 1918 the treaty was signed that joined Transsylvania with Romania. So every year people celebrate this national day. But what better place to celebrate it then in Alba Iulia itself. There is a military parade in the morning, concerts throughout the day and of course loads of people watching to do. In the evening there are fireworks to be seen. It all takes place on the main square in the citadel. I was glad i was invited to celebrate it in Alba Iulia and had a very nice time here. Manastirea Sucevita, Romania by Fam_Stoica The monasteries located in Bucovina (NE part of Romania) are among the most picturesque treasures of Romania. Seven painted churches (Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist - Arbore, Church of the Assumption of the Virgin of the former Monastery of Humor, Church of the Annunciation of the Monastery of Moldovita, Church of the Holy Rood - Patrauti, Church of St Nicholas and the Catholicon of the Monastery of Probota, Church of St George - Suceava, Church of St George of the former Voronet Monastery) are protected by UNESCO as part of the world heritage. With their painted exterior walls, decorated with 15th- and 16th-century frescoes that are considered masterpieces of Byzantine art, these churches in northern Moldavia are unique in Europe. Far from being merely wall decorations, the paintings represent complete cycles of religious murals on all facades. Their outstanding composition, elegant outline and harmonious colours blend perfectly with the surrounding landscape. Leave a Comment

Like i went 100 years back in time by Mique EU citizens can stay in Romania without a visa for 3 months. Since i came at the end of september and planned to stay until april or so i needed to get out of the country and back in. I had heard that driving out and back into the country in a single day wasn't a problem at least at the Bors-crossing. But i have no car. So on the 28th of december, a day before my 3 months were over, i took a train from Oradea station to Biharkeresztes in Hungary . For some security reasons i had packed my toothbrush and some clean underwear. One might never know. I left Oradea at 10.20 and arrived in Hungary at around 11 (romanian time). It took a while before i was allowed to get off the train but at a quarter past i was finally of the train. Apart from the ticket and passport control they also changed locs here hence the waiting time. I walked into the train station since i wanted to make a seat reservation like i had to do in Romania. I thought the next train to Oradea was at 2.30 (hungarian time) but the lady at the ticket office told me that the train to Oradea would leave in 10 minutes. I got into the train, hoping that spending half an hour outside Romania would be long enough to get my next 3 months. Now i think even 5 minutes would do the trick. I had no problems at all and 2 hours after i left Oradea i was back where i left that morning...... No problems at all. Leave a Comment

Piata Romana by Pinoy Muzeul Stalui is the Village Museum of Bucharest founded in 1936. It is one of the world most important ethnographic museums. It is a synthesis of the Romanian folk architecture until 1900 - before the urban influence on the village; there are exhibited authentic peasant houses, representative for the architectural styles determined by the specific environmental conditions - mountains, hills, and plains. by alirom Moldavia has an extensive countryside of forests and hills, with many lesser known delights to discover, especially in the region of Targu Neamt. You might even catch a glimpse of a buffalo, a species which is being reintroduced into a natural reservation. There are hiking routes and camping facilities, as well as good hotels in the main towns. And Moldavian wines have been known for five centuries. There are vineyards that can be visited. Bucovina - the north-eastern province of Romania - is renowned for the beautiful exterior frescoes on the walls of its monasteries. These triumphs of Byzantine-influenced art reflect a development of Moldavian civilisation in the 15th and 16th centuries, under the patronage of Stephen the Great (1457-1504). Leave a Comment
