Where to go?

by Dabs

Romania is a large country with much to offer, much more than could be stuffed into a 10 day trip. As much as I like visiting big cities, I'd encourage you only to dally in Bucharest for a day, two at most, and discover some of the beautiful countryside, still rich in tradition. Bucharest may have at one time been the Paris of the East but it struck me as chaotic with masses of concrete apartment buildings, lots of traffic and grime. Our journey took us from Bucharest, by car through the hilly, sometimes mountainous region of Transylvania, back to Bucharest, then onto Moldavia by train to see the UNESCO designated painted monasteries. The Danube Delta, the Black Sea Coast, the wooden churches of Maramures, all will have to wait for another time.We arranged the first part of our trip through General Tours in the US who contracts with Atlantic Tours in Romania. We had a privately guided tour...

Staying longer then the official 3 months

by Mique

EU citizens can stay in Romania without a visa for 3 months. Since i came at the end of september and planned to stay until april or so i needed to get out of the country and back in. I had heard that driving out and back into the country in a single day wasn't a problem at least at the Bors-crossing. But i have no car. So on the 28th of december, a day before my 3 months were over, i took a train from Oradea station to Biharkeresztes in Hungary . For some security reasons i had packed my toothbrush and some clean underwear. One might never know. I left Oradea at 10.20 and arrived in Hungary at around 11 (romanian time). It took a while before i was allowed to get off the train but at a quarter past i was finally of the train. Apart from the ticket and passport control they also changed locs here hence the waiting time. I walked into the train station since i wanted to make a seat...

The local food

by Mique

I love romanian food. Things like a good ciorba de fasole (beansoup), zacusca and most of all sarmale. Unfortunately expecially sarmale is very hard to find in restaurants. The best way is if someone's mum has made it. Sarmale with Smantana (cream) is my absolute favorite of the romanian cuisine so far. Though the ciorba's make a great second. Except for ciorba de burta (tripe soup). I've been given that one a miss. Maybe unfairly so but i don't think my mind can stomach that...

Celebrate the national day in Alba Iulia

by Mique

On the 1st of december 1918 the treaty was signed that joined Transsylvania with Romania. So every year people celebrate this national day. But what better place to celebrate it then in Alba Iulia itself. There is a military parade in the morning, concerts throughout the day and of course loads of people watching to do. In the evening there are fireworks to be seen. It all takes place on the main square in the citadel. I was glad i was invited to celebrate it in Alba Iulia and had a very nice time here.

Traveling in Romania

by Mique

I'm not sure whether this is true in the more touristy time of year but during my travels around i've been approached so often by people who wanted to practise their english. And on more then one occasion those people made sure i got on the right train or bus or made sure someone else took care of that. Although once i got on the wrong train and in the complete wrong direction. Which makes for an interesting story now but at that time wasn't so funny when the lights fell out at the station and i was standing on a completely dark platform which was just a strip of concrete between to tracks...

Not for a million dollars....

by Eaowin29

Well, that would have to be Transylvania....the gypsies....well, shoot can't think of any more...though to be fair, it is a country with some beautiful architechture, and scenery, if you can get past the dead dogs and cats on the side of the road... I learned a lot about the origins of the "gypsy". Not at all the romanticized, Americanized version, but still interesting.

Transilvania-Much More Than Dracula

by edvin_br

Transilvania is a huge region in Romania,a real masterpiece of architecture... It begins at the slopes of the carpathian mounteins and contineues until the border with Hungary and Yugoslavia at the west and with Ukraine in the north. Its a region with a long history and a lot of rulers who were here and awrded it with many cultures. There are many beautiful cities and towns that were built in Medieval times and still has a lot of buildings in very good shape. In Transilvania you will see many forestes and mounteins with beutiful ski resorts such: Sinaia, Poiana Brasov, Predeal and more...There are also many beautiful cities with different style of architecture (especially barouque, ghotic and neo classic), this cities are also the most devaluped in Romania (after Bucharest of course) and its very easy to get there, for example: Timisoara, Cluj, Oradea, Brasov, Sibiu, Sighisoara and more.

Adoptive Family Returns

by ddlucy

We had joy of adopting 2 children from Romania - in 1991 and in 1994. Well in 2004, it was time for us to tour their homeland with them. What a memorable trip it was. What difference a decade makes. I was in Romania just after their 'dark days' of Communism. In the early 90's - water service in Buchurest was spotty and the place was just plain old and tired out. Today this country is gorgeous, alive, and with unlimited potenial. This is a land of contrast. You will see the 'well-to-do' of Buchurest in their BMW's. Head to the country and you will see the shepards riding their horse carts heading to their flocks. Both groups are doing just fine. In the country you will see well kept homes still using a water well ---- yet on top of their home they have a satelite dish. We toured the country with the kids. Suceava, the painted monasteries, Sighsoara, Bran Castle, Brasov, Buchurest .... we...
