Mamaia

by Sjalen

If you plan to go for several weeks and want a base other than a noisy city, then Mamaia can be it (unless you want to see the Carpathians). Today it has lost some of its 1970s glory but at the same time, the hotels have been modernised. They all face the long, sandy beach which look a bit gloomy here in my "rainy" picture but which was gorgeously sunny most days. Mamaia is good as it is close to both the Danube delta and the historic city of Constanta. All the "bufetuls" along the beach where they sold Pepsi. Something I hadn't even seen in Sweden in them days and certainly didn't expect in Eastern Europe. But "fondest" memory is probably the night out in Luna Park, the amusement park where any child will be happy.

A little history IS a valuable thing

by tiganeasca

This applies, of course, to any destination.... Know where you're going. It's helpful to know where you are and where you're headed. Otherwise, you might not discover where to come back to!Oversimplifying a bit, the country was historically comprised of Wallachia (the southernmost portion running east/west) and Moldavia (the easternmost portion running north/south). Together these two were called the Regat, or Old Kingdom. Transylvania (the chunk between the jaws of the mountains), which had been a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was awarded to Romania in the Treaty of Trianon (1920).

The wonderful, friendly people of Romania

by jhawk1000

Romania is a nation sitting on a natural resource treasure. It is also a nation of beauty with the plains of Bucharest and Ploesti, the rolling hills which remind you of the Smoky Mountains in America, the Carpathian Mountains, the valleys surrounded by hills, and the virtually untouched ancient ruins of different eras including the Dacian, Thracian, Roman, Ottoman and so forth. But the national treasure has to be the kind and gentle people of Romania. We met so many wonderful people. We met computer people who took hours of their time to download our photo images and write CDs after our computer was taken. We had people stop us on the street from all walks of life who only wanted to talk about our country. We had workers at the Fortress give us coffee and wine on a cold day. We had students who were wonderful and will soon be Romania. I already miss the people and we have been back...

Fortunes of war

by CliffClaven

For a description of life in Bucharest before the communists took over, read Olivia Manning's "The Great Fortune", the first book of her Balkan Trilogy, a semi-autobiograhical account of the writer's experiences in eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean just before and during the Second World War. The books were adapted in the late 1980s for a successful TV series, "Fortunes of War", starring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson.

Machine guns and Rambo knives.

by ADV27

My favortie thing is that I don't still have a machine gun pointed at my head. My fondest memory and one that I will never forget was probably the time when I was looking down the barrel of an AK-47, after having not eaten anything or drank water for 3 days. Not to mention I hadn't showered in 5 days and the train was filthy, hot, smelly and sweaty. Read my Romania Travelogue, unless what you have read has already offended you!!!

Walachia

by alirom

Walachia, former Principate of Walachia (between the 14th and the 18th centuries) is a historical region situated in the southern part of Romania. The region is divided into two subregions by the river Olt: Oltenia (24 square kilometres) in the western side and Muntenia (52486 square kilometres) in the eastern side. The Danube river separates Walachia from Serbia (in the western side) and from Bulgaria (in the southern side), and the Carpathian Mountains separates it from Banat and Transilvania (in NV). In the north-eastern side Walachia borders on Moldavia. The historical region Walachia is the most developed, both from the industrial and agricultural point of view, among the regions of Romania, and Bucharest (the capital of the country) is the most important city in the region.Walachia was part of the Roman Province Dacia, and, in spite of the long periods of foreign domination, it...

You will never forget it .........

by alirom

Romania is a country in the Eastern part of Europe. To the East, it is bordered by the Black Sea. Its neighbors are: To the South: Bulgaria To the West: Serbia and Hungary To the North: Ukraine To the East: Moldova Romania spans a total surface of 237,500 square kms. (roughly 91,800 sq.miles). Picture it to be about the size of Oregon. Our country is blessed with all the major forms of landscape: The Carpathian Mountains (maximum height 2535 m, 8300 ft) cross the country from the north to the south-west. To the west of the Carpathians lies a large plateau. To the East and South there are extended low plains fit for agriculture. The Danube flows along the southern border with Bulgaria and into the Black sea forming a magnificent delta. The country is historically composed of three regions: West of the mountains lies Transylvania The south plains are called Wallachia The north-eastern...

Maramures

by alirom

The fierce individuality of the Maramures mountain valleys in the north-west of Transylvania is legendary. Their inhabitants are of Dacian descent and their independence as a State reached its peak under Decebalus in the first century AD, before the Roman conquest. Wave after wave of invasions followed. Agriculture has always been the lifeblood of existence in the mountains. Local traditions reflect this, as there are festivals in April, May, August and December. The one in December is held at Sighetu Marmatiei, with carnival parades and revellers wearing animal masks.Woodcarving skills are the dominant feature of Maramures crafts. Particularly characteristic of the villages are wooden churches, with tall steeples and shingled roofs, some dating back to the 14th century. Highly developed too is the embroidery of traditional costumes. On Sunday afternoons both women and men often parade...

Transylvania and Banat

by alirom

Transylvania is by far the most romantic and inspiring of Romania's provinces. Its very name brings to mind visions of mountain peaks rising up to the sky above wooded valleys and sparkling streams, visions of high-roofed wooden churches, legendary castles and a troubled history. But there is much more to it: ski resorts and health spas, hiking trails and the Retezat National Park, fascinating medieval towns, art museums and good hotels. In Transylvania new vistas and leisure activities appear wherever you go.This south-western corner of the country has a drier, more Mediterranean climate than most of Romania and is also slightly different from the cultural point of view. Habsburg rule until 1918 gave it an Art Nouveau architecture, while almost 1,900 years earlier the Romans had established a spa at Baile Herculane that is still one of Romania's most fashionable ones. Nearby Mount...
