Consider this: In the...

by cyrus_irani

Consider this: In the countryside as the train slowly chugs along passed the endless miles of sunflower plantations, potatoes farms and fields of elegantly stylized haystacks - harvested with scythes and meticulously arranged by farmers with pitchforks - you realize that the economy is so poor because it is primarily agricultural. The landscape is both idyllic and horrific. The evidence of mismanagement and political folly are all around: mega factories and industry created by the Communists now in advanced states of decay seem alien, imposed rather than accepted. But there is a flipside - Romanian people are generous, hospitable, and will give so much you can't imagine. Visit the countryside, the old transylvanian towns, the bucovian monasteries - experience real peasant life. It is often rewarding to see how some things haven't changed. I've gained some perspective from sharing...

Go to Translyvania, its full of medievil towns and lush countryside. Sighiasora was an wonderful town full of atmosphere, its also surrounded by old villages which are easy to cycle to. Stepping back in time in translyvannia and talking to romany gypsies (wonderfully kind people).

by Levente_D

Romania is beutiful especially the country side of it! Most of the historical cities of Transilvania have been transformed into some 'glories' of Ceausescu's 'Golden Era' so there's not much more left then gray concreete buildings and factories although there are still some remained parts which are showing the former beuty like Oradea, Timisoara, Brasov, Iasi, Cluj, Sighisoara.

What strikes me about Romania is the hospitality of it's people, especially in the more rural areas. You can hitch hike across Romania for less than it would cost you to eat at MacDonalds in the UK, and you can always find a cheap meal and good company wherever you go. Wheverever else you go, don't miss Romania.

Bucharest is not the most exciting city, and I suggest that when in Romania, not spending most of your time there. Brasov, and Sigishoara were two places that I absolutely adored, and highly recommend. The countryside is beautiful, which makes train rides very enjoyable! On your way North from Bucharest, be sure to check out Peles castle in Sinaia...It's one of the most ornate and wonderfully decorated castles I have ever seen!

Even though they lived on scraps, these children had hearts of gold and a very optimisitc attitude. In Romania, once an orphan turns 16, they are put out onto the street. They have no education, no job skill, they are just turned out. Most of them end up living on the street and many become addicted to drugs. The government has no programs in place to help these children. As tragic as it is, I still have the memory of their smiles and optimism.

The language is easy and complicated at the same time. We can easily guess the meaning of a text because a lot of words are similar to french. But the pronounciation is difficult. They have sounds we don’t have in french or in english, such as a kind of “eu”, but from deep in the throat. These are sounds very gutural. Also, the “u” is prononce “ou”. I think that they don’t have the sound “uuuu”.We also have to be carefull with some automatism and try to avoid them. In french, “c” and “h“ do “ch” (like in “teacher”) but them, it makes “ke” (like “school). Here are some other exemples:“c” is generally used as “tch”“º” is prononce “ch”“þ” is prononce “dz”Furthermore, “i” are not really prononced when they are at the end of a word, such as Bucureºti (boucourecht). Also, plural and single word are different, such as feminine and masculine word!!! The grammatical is also weird for people like...

Go to the countryside

by Romanian_Bat

The countryside in Romania is particularly interesting, as people there have remained somewhere hung in the past, preserving their traditions and way of life. Maybe this sounds phony, maybe not, but places like the small villages in Apuseni or Maramures Mountains will make you shiver. At least.
