    Szigligeti Theater

by katalin Written Aug 4, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The theatre was constructed on the northern part of the Bémer square, although there have been debates over its location. Marking out the location was preceded by a „fight” over more decades, which can be easily understood if we consider the fact that there were multiple locations contending. In July 1899 (after almost seventy years of waiting!) the building of the theatre began with housebrakings.
After a few unsuccessful invitations for tender the town made an agreement with a company from Vienna to design the new theatre building. The Fellner and Helmer institute was already famous in Europe for designing almost 50 theatres (from Zürich to Odessa) that met the requirements of the age, to be more specific: they were perfectly built according to the specific requirements of the era’s architecture and performing arts. The building has a greek „face”: the six monumental ionic columns and the timpanon above them speaks for itself, also the allegoric faces of the latter are there to emphasize the classical character of the facade.

The theatre’s inauguration ceremony took place in almost exactly 15 months after the beginning of the constructions, on a Monday, in October 15th, 1900, in the lobby of the new theatre.

The act of delivery was actually the placing of the closing stone. The official report of the ceremonial meeting of the council, a list of „those who contributed to the construction of the theatre” and the deed of foundation had all been introduced into a cylindrical metal box and then this box was placed – along the festive sppeches and ceremonial hammer strikes – into a special little cave in the lobby. (This metal box turned up in August 2010 during the renovation of the theatre and all of the above mentioned 110 year old documents were in it.)

    Trips in the Apuseni Mountains

by csabascout Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are many reasons to visit the Western Carpathians and spend at least one week here:

    - You can visit cities and villages (the countryside) that offer a true experience. With my help, you can build a real Eastern Europe picture: Pigs on the main street of the village (in Transylvania there are many German villages), markets that are a tradition to themselves, a lot of entertainment and fun with Romanian music bands (the music industry is at a very high level) etc. Our main headquarters is Oradea, where you can find comfortable hotels ( 3, 4 starred hotels), thermal-baths and spas at Bãile Felix and a variety of entertaining places.

    - The Western Carpathians (Apuseni Mountains) are unique not only in Romania, but in the whole Europe, not necessarily due to their high peaks, but because of their wonderful lime formations with uncountable caves, Dolinas and Poljes.

However, everything remained unbuilt, and that brings a unique beauty with itself. (for example you can observe traditional animal breeding or lime burning).

    - The hospitality of the people.

The highlight of the Apuseni = Cetatile Ponorului

    walking along the river

by tengere Updated Nov 10, 2008

By walking along riverside you look as in water as on earth all beautifull palaces of Oradea. The river Crisul Repede/Sebes Koros is very rapid, clear and beautifull.
You cann start to walk from Dacia Hotel since Rogerius where are in summer the hydrocucicles and in winter the swans
The most beautifull places are from synagogue to the Miarie (Black Eagle Palace, Saint Laszlo Church)

    Hot Water

by szonja Written Jun 27, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Both in the city and near to the city you have the possibility to drop into nice, warm water. Inside the city you can find two easily accessible thermal spa resorts: Strandul Iosia, Strandul Municipal. You can enter them pretty cheaply and you can find both cold and warm water, relaxation, recreation and activity. Outside the city there is a more famous spa resort, called Baile Felix. It lies at about 4 km distance from Nagyvárad/Oradea. Here you can find more hotels, several bath places and a brand new aquapark. Of course the prices here are higher than in the city, though not too high for a traveler from west. This small resort lies near the woods, so after bathing you can take a walk there and eat dinner at a fancy hotel or restaurant.

  • Spend a day in Felix

    by actor22_2000 Written Dec 18, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

During your travels, be sure to take a moment to visit Felix while staying in Oradea. Felix is about a ten minute cab ride from city center and is well worth the trip. I have spent many days here soaking up the wonderful mineral water, drinking a cool beer and even getting a very nice massage. Expect to spend $20 - $25 per person for a nice afternoon. They have private changing rooms and a clothing check in where you will get a number in order to pick up your clothes at the end of your stay. I received a very relaxing massage for $10 and tipped $4. Do not be stingy here...this is a great time at a fraction of the cost in USA. Tip well when you receive great service...do not flash your money but appreciate the service. You will find several baths here and the one most commonly used by Romanians is the Apollo. There are higher priced baths that I have visited, but I still enjoy Apollo. If you go midday it is very slow and relaxing with not a lot of children. Weekends tend to be alittle more family friendly. In the Summer they also have a city pool that can be fun. You will also find an outside city pool in Oradea not to far from the Hotel Continental.

    Synagogue

by Villageidiot Written Aug 7, 2005

The Oradea Synagogue was the largest of the three in the large Jewish community before WWII. The number of Jews is about 3% what it was then.

The building shows more Middle-eastern influence than the others.
