When walking near any shopping centers, especially the center of town, small children will likely ask you for money. There might be two or three of them asking at the same time. You have two choices. You can either ignore them or give them a little bit of money. After a while, I started carrying small coins with me. I was unlikely to use the coins to buy anything so I figured I was putting them to good use. If you do not plan to give them anything, say nothing to them and don't even look at them. The sooner they realize that there is no chance to get money from, the sooner they wlll leave you alone.
Whatever you do, keep an eye or a hand on your wallet and pockets. You might be distracted by one of them while the other two steal your money and passport.

When you arrive at the train station, no doubt you will bump into Maria or Grig Bolea. I would strongly advise against going with them, they (especially Maria) are very charismatic however they will make many unfulfilled promises and money is their only motivation. Leave a Comment

As soon as you exit the train station you will be overwhelmed by annoying taxi drivers. Just ignore them, and look at the prices wrtitten on the doors of taxis. Some taxis have prices twice higher than other.
So, don't search for flushing mercedes, you can take dacia for much smaller price, and, to be honest, the city is not big and you won't spend much time in taxi, so why spend money for expensive taxis, use cheaper ones. And remember, check the prices on doors and use taximeter.
Like I said, city is not big, so if you don't have much luggage and don't mind walking, the town center is just 30' walk from train station.

I found it odd that the exchange offices also have 0% commission when changing Euro to Romanian currency, but very bad exchange rate. So, I changed the money in Raiffeisen bank with 0% commission. Oh yes, the exchange rate changes few times in a day, so I got different amounts of cash in the morning and in the afternoon.

While the central square in Brasov really is a spectacular example of Transylvanian architecture and town design, pretty much every restaurant there caters only to tourists and the prices are really overinflated. Don't eat there as they will add lots of extras you don't know about and you will end up with a pretty expensive meal.
Because the square is so nice you will definitely want to visit just to walk around. If you do want to sit down either picnic in the center or just grab a beer or a drink, without buying a full meal. Leave a Comment
