Buying a train ticket in Romania

Buying a train ticket in Romania can be a bit complicated. First of all train fares depend on the type of train. The faster the train the more expensive the ticket. In addition to this a seat reservation is obligatory to most of the trains.

Train tickets are sold in the station office only about 1 hour before the train departs, this is due to the slow seat allocation and reservation system.

An alternative is to buy your tickets at one of the CFR booking offices (Agentia de Voiaj CFR). They can be found in most towns and sell tickets in advance but usually not for same day travel.

We bought our ticket from Brasov to Bucharest at the CFR booking office of Brasov. It is located a 15 minutes walk northeast of the Town Hall Square (Piata Sfatului).

Address: Agentia de Voiaj CFR, B-dul 15 Noiembrie nr. 43, Brasov

We arrived and left Brasov by train from/to Bucharest.

In Romania the train fares depend on the type of train, which means that fast trains can cost more than double the price than regional trains.

In 2007 an ICE ticket Bucharest to Brasov was 38,80 RON and the journey took about 2,5 hours.

Please read my tip "Buying a train ticket in Romania" for more info.

Brasov has train connections to almost all bigger cities in Romania, as well as to some international destinations including Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava and Prague.

Brasov's train station is located about 2,5 km north of the city centre. The best way to get to town is the local bus no. 4 which goes to Piata Unirii in the city centre.

    Rasnov to Brasov bus

From Brasov we went by bus to Rasnov and Bran. Brasov has 3 bus stations for domestic and international bus services. They are called "Autogara".

Autogara 1 can be found right next to the train station. Buses to Bucharest leave from here.

Our bus to Rasnov and Bran left from Autogara 2 which is located about 2,5 km north of the city centre just near the Bartholomeus Church.

Tickets can usually be bought directly from the driver. The ticket to Rasnov was 2,00 RON and to Bran 3,50 RON (October 2007).

You can get to the summit of Brasov's Tampa Mountain by either walking or by cable car (Telecabina Tampa).

The cable car runs daily except Mondays from 10:00 h until 18:00 h. A return trip costs 8,00 RON (October 2007).

The base station can be found at Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu; just 10 minutes walk south of the Town Hall Square (Piata Sfatului). The journey to the top station (960 m) at the Restaurant Panoramic takes only 2:20 minutes.

Please read my General Tip "Overview from Tampa Mountain" for more info.

  • RATBv bus #4 - Brasov
    RATBv bus #4
    by HORSCHECK, 1 more photos
Brasov has an extensive bus network which is run by RATBv (Regia Autonoma Transport Brasov). They usually operate from 5:30 h until midnight. Some special night services are in operation as well.

The main bus stop in the city centre is Livada Postei. Important routes are number 4 which links the train station with the city centre and number 20 which runs to Poiana Brasov.

Tickets can be brought from RATBv kiosks or from newsagent's kiosks. A single ticket costs 1,50 RON and has to be validated when boarding the bus. The route to Poiana Brasov (bus #20) costs 3,50 RON (October 2007).

  • Taxis in Brasov - Brasov
    Taxis in Brasov
    by HORSCHECK
Honestly speaking, I usually avoid taking taxis in Eastern Europe, because drivers almost always try to rip tourists off.

If for any reason you have to take a taxi, make sure that your hotel or a local person orders you the taxi. At least make sure that it is a taxi from one of the bigger reliable companies and that the taxi meter is switched on.

Taxis have the rates (base fee, price per km, price per hour) displayed on the outside of the car. When we were in Brasov the price per km was about 1,30 RON (October 2007).

Most of the Taxis in Romania are the local Dacia Logan cars.

Brasov's city centre is best explored on foot, especially as many streets in the historic city centre are pedestrianised.

There are also many small alleys which aren't accessible to cars or buses.

When wandering around the streets just make sure to have a look at the upper parts of the house facades.

If you are tired from walking you can still catch a local bus and get back to your starting point.

Brasov has a well-developed bus and trolley system with buses running every 10 minutes between 05:30 to midnight (Sat, Sun 06:00-22:30). Buses and trolleybuses in Brasov have a standard price per journey. Tickets can be bought at RAT Bv kiosks. You must punch your ticket yourself once on board. Controllers check your tickets.

The best way to get to poiana Brasov ski center from Brasov the town, if you don't have a car, of course, is the bus. The ticket is very cheap (around 0,10 cents!) and it takes about half an hour. But beware of the crowds!!! (see the photo) On the way back you might have to wait in a queue even longer to get into the bus!

  • When you are at the train station in Brasov, you will probably notice white fans parked outside. These microbuses, as the locals call them, offer cheap and fast transportatoin to Bucharest and other cities. If you are going to Sinaia, take one of the buses going to Bucharest as it will stop in Sinaia along the way.

The vans do not leave until they are full or near capacity. Buy a ticket as soon as you arrive at the train station and take a seat near the front of the van. There is a storage area in the back, but space is limited. If you have a lot of bags, you might have to take the train. Tickets cost a couple of dollars.
