    bus stop

From Brasov you can take the bus to Bran from Autogara 1 which runs every half hour on weekdays and hourly on the weekend. You get off at Rasnov after you spotted the castle on your left side. The journey costs 2 Lei (Oct. 07).

Going back to Brasov is a bit tricky as there is no timetable at the bus stop. We were approached by a private person to take a ride. The car had German number plates (!) but we declined although he eventually found some locals as customers. Well, at the weekend you have to wait one hour at the most.

How to get to the castle

    sign on the road

Once you are in Rasnov, walk to the town center underneath the castle. From the town square you can take a steepish path up. There is a small sign which points through an arch next to the pizza restaurant. Or else just follow the road and you will see the sign on the photo. Keep going until you hit a sportsfield on your left. There is a dirt road that takes you up to the castle from this side, it starts right behind the sportsfield. We walked up this way and decended down the steepish foot path.

    church tower and fortress uphill

Once in Rasnov, you can reach the fortress either by footh or by car, depending on the time you have....and not only that....

Walk towards the tower of the main church, which rises below the fortress rock, then turn right and get into the old city square.
The stairs leading to the fortress are on your left, in the courtyard of an old house (there's a small pub as the ground floor). Look for a small sign indicating towards the fortress.

The route is indicated by large road signs. However, beware that the last part of the road (1km or so) is unpaved.

    Bus to Rasnov

The bus to Bran passes throught Rasnov first. We went by this bus.

We got to Rasov and Bran by taking a bus from Brasov bus station number 2. The ticket cost 6RON. Buses leave a 9am, 10am, 11am then at half hourly intervals finishing around 7 (I think). The front of the bus will say Bran, but its final destination is the little village of Moeciu.

There was the choice of several other buses from other places coming back from Rasov, just get on anything that says Brasov.

    Bus Stop, Rasnov

The bus to and from Brasov takes about 30 minutes and is a very cheap, and sometimes rough ride. It's variable: one bus was clean, comfy and air-conditioned, the other was a rust bucket with seats and a suspension that was as hard as rock.

The main problem you might have with getting to Rasnov is where to get off for the castle. There were three stops when I visited, and the town stretched out along several kilometers of highway. It turned out that my educated guess, the second of three stops, was the right one. And you can see that stop pictured.

On returning the buses didn't stop at the marked bus stop, because that was being used as a car park. Instead it stopped at the corner of the road. You will want to be aware of that, because it's quite a distance to run.

Buses run from Autogara 2 in Brasov. See my Brasov page for more info on that.
