    A landmark

by viddra Written Aug 9, 2014

According to a legend, Hercules, tired after his many battles, stopped here to bathe and rest. That's why the Romans, who ruled over the area and later helped it prosper, decided to name the spa after him.

Six statues of Hercules have been discovered so far, but the 1 in the town centre is a bronze replica from 1874.

    The brigand's cave

I wanted to see the roman baths in hotel Roman but since they were in use i asked if there was something i could do in the meantime. I didn't feel like sitting and just waiting in a hotel lobby. So they told me i could visit this cave. It is just behind Hotel Roman with a path a few meters after the hotel (from Biale Herculane). It isn't a very long way to get here but the steps can be a bit tricky. As with so many things in romania they're not very well taken care of and can be full with rubble.

In times gone by, brigand's would use this cave to hide and watch their quarry passing. Now it is a place for tourists to visit and the local youth to hang out.

    The roman baths

Acording to legend Hercules himself came her to bathe once. But surely the romans have found their way to the thermal waters of Baile Herculane. In Hotel Roman there are still roman baths 2000 years old and still in use. Probably not completely original but i settled for it. You can visit the baths but only when they're not in use. I'd expected them to be a lot bigger but found them very small. But for 2000-year old baths i thought they looked pretty good.

    All the historic buildings

by Mique Written Dec 29, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The whole of the historic centre of Baile Herculane is just an architectural gem. Everywhere you look you find buildings just just trigger your fantasies of how life used to be here more then a 100 years ago. Luckily all the buildings have a small ' monument' sign so they'll not be torn down. For which i'm very glad. It was a famous spa in the 19th century and so almost all buildings in the old center date from that time. And they all look grand. Even when they're no longer in use today. But i hope they'll be renovated all of them and that the ones not used today will have a new destination any time soon.

    The Casino

by viddra Updated Aug 9, 2014

Close to the town hall, there's a casino-museum built in the 1860s. Believe it or not, there's a 200-year-old giant sequoia tree in front of it.

    Natural springs

by viddra Written Aug 9, 2014

There are 16 natural springs in this area. Since they contain large amounts of sulphur, which has healing powers, the air you breathe may smell a bit strange.

Baile Herculane is located in a mountain area, so trips are a must if you go there. For example, you can climb up to the Coronini Plateau in less than an hour.
