Histria is Romania's oldest city.
It was founded in 657BC by Greek merchants and its importance both as a port and as a merchant city grew rapidly to become the most important settement in the area.
Unfortunately the port was gradually covered by sediments and sand and the commerce lines were diverted to other routes and the importance of Histria decayed and it was abandoned. It was forgotten and its ruins were rediscovered only in 1914.
Today you can see plenty of Histria old buildings. Of course we are speaking ruins here but many building have been restaured and put together and you can see bits and pieces like rest of the baths or thermae and the forum and many other features you will recognise if you are keen on Greek and Roman history.
There is as well a museum where you can see terracottas, stellaes and pieces recoverd from archeological sites. Many of them from Histria, other from an assortment of nearby sites.
The museum has quite good explanatory cards next ot each work and it is dead cheap as all museums in Romania so, don't miss the chance to have a look and to learn a abit about the old Romania !!
The archeological site opens from 9 am to 8 pm. same as the museum
