If you're a fan of libations, get yourself a bottle of homemade brandy when you go to Sapanta. The Hungarian (they have a large presence in the region) word palinca is applied to strong alcohol which exceeds 50% content and often in the neighborhood of 60% and is made from plums or apples. I was informed that plum palinca is generally better tasting and it's identified by a golden tint to the liquid. The bottle should get a bit bubbly as well when shaken if you get a quality product. We asked an old Romanian fellow if he knew where we might be able to acquire some fire water and he graciously led us about town at a snail's pace, bringing us into the unlocked and unattended homes of his neighbors, regaling us (in Romanian of course) with captivating tales of his life...
