  • Hitchhiking is pretty common in Maramures. If you don't have a car, it's the easiest and cheapest way to get to the villages from Sighetu Marmatiei. We went from Sighetu to Sapanta by taxi because it was Sunday morning and no one was on the road. The half hour ride cost us 250,000 lei! Don't worry, that's only a bit more than 7 bucks. On the way back we caught a ride with two older Romanian fellows and a pleasant, weathered lady for 100,000 lei. For the reduced cost we did have to put up with the driver's pit stops for cigarettes and booze along the way, but we didn't mind.

Fly to Maramures (Baia Mare airport)

  • Maramures is far from Bucharest so road or railway travel takes more than 10 hours. Therefore the best travel option is to take a plane from Bucharest's Otopeni Airport to Baia Mare (capital city of Maramures county) - takes only 1 hour and 15 minutes.

As for the date of this tip the schedule for Bucharest - Baia Mare flights are as follows:

1,2,3,4,7 (days of the week, where 1 is Monday) RO 619 departing Bucharest at 20:45 landing in Baia Mare at 22:05

    Return flight:

2,3,4,5,6 (days of the week, where 1 is Monday) RO 620 departing Baia Mare at 06:20 landing in Bucharest 7:35

Price for a return trip: from EUR 60 (compared to a train ticket that is about EUR 25 daytime travel or EUR 50 sleeping cabin)

Bucharest - Baia Mare by train

  • If you like to travel by train, and you're ok with traveling more than 11 hours, currently there are 3 trains / day from Bucharest to Baia Mare:

    A1745 7:30 - 19:29 11h59min
    R741 19:50 - 6:27 (night train) 10h37min
    A1641 21:33 - 10:12 (night train) 12h39min

    Return trip:

    A1746 6:45 - 19:01 12h16min
    A1642 16:35 - 5:26 (night train) 12h51min
    R742 23:07 - 10:28 (night train) 11h21min

    Important:

Don't take P trains, those are slow trains use only A, R and IC/EC trains, those are express trains
Expect delays from 15min to 60min on all trains as distance may affect the schedule
I strongly recommend traveling 1st class

Hitchhiking is the thing to do when you want to go somewhere and there are no buses going that day. It happened to us. But luckily hitchhiking is widely done. Just pay the driver the same amount that you would pay for teh bus (ask beforehand some people what would be tre price) or tell him that you have no money and then he (she) can decide to take you or not.

We needed to hitchhike to Sapanta because there were no buses on sunday. And it wasn't difficult on the way up. But when we wanted to return to Sigheti we waited over an hour in the snow and cold. The third car that passed decided to take us along...

It is almost impossible to rely on public transport to visit all villages having wooden churches. In some cases we even followed dirty roads.
Your best options are either to hire a car (but still then it's a bit puzzling to find your way), or to use a car with a driver (taxidriver or through a travel agency).
In our case we used the services of a travel agency based in Baia Mare called Nord Nord Vest.
We booked a 5 days tour around Maramures and Bucovina including transportation, accommodation and a dinner per day.
The owner has a real passion for the area and that is passport to enjoy Maramures

Lying in the west-north corner of Romania, Maramures isn't the easiest place to visit in Romania.
The getway to the region is the industrial city of Baia Mare.
Baia Mare has at least once daily flight connection with Bucharest, while the city is served even by overnight train.
There are bus connections with other cities but I can;t tell anything of the service quality

Traveling around with buses can be quite an experience. On teh way to Sigheti for example we had one of which the back door didn't close properly. The whole bus was soo cold. It was around - 7 or so outside and just slightly warmer inside. And that for 3 hours with a long stretch through the mountains..
