by alirom Ploiesti, city in southern Romania and capital of Prahova County, near Bucharest. It is the center of the country's petroleum production; other products include textiles, hats, drilling equipment, hardware, paper and cardboard, glass and leather goods, furniture, and rubber and clay products. The University of Ploiesti (founded in 1948) is located here. During World War II (1939-1945), Ploiesti was repeatedly bombed by planes of the United States, Britain, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The first U.S. raid on the oil refineries at Ploiesti, on August 1, 1943, was one of the largest of the war, and it destroyed nearly 50 percent of their productive capacity. Leave a Comment

Everyday it is changing, but as of now very few places take credit cards. There are a few currency exchanges around, but you'll have to search for best rates (dont use the hotel, you'll pay ~2% on average). If you use ATM for cash advance, the best rate that I've found is the Bank Post machine on the south side of the Hale building (it a big building with a silver dome and clock tower on the north side of the downtown park area). It's a 3~5 minute walk walk from Hotel Central. There are many ATM's in the city, but the one next to the Hale gives the best exchange rate.

My favorite thing about Ploiesti is that it is just a short distance away from Bucharest. I can take an hour maxi-taxi or train trip to Bucharest and spend the day in the capital just hanging out. For a traveler, the hotels are going to be cheaper here than in Bucharest. I recommend having a hotel room in Ploiesti and taking the maxi-taxi into Bucharest in order to save a few dollars.
Well, I am still living here so I don't have any memories of the place. Leave a Comment

go to the centre of the city where there is a park where you can watch people mingle and play chess. alternatively, you can sit down on a bench and watch the water fountains whilst eating a sweet pastry from a nearby bakery.
strolling along the street that gets blocked off from all motor vehicles allowing people to skate and stroll along in the sunshine. - sorry i forgot the street name its pretty central though! Leave a Comment
