Very few people in Zalau have heard of the Red Dragon Restaurant, or if they have heard of it, they are much to afraid to explore a new unknown culinary treat, in fear that they will be subject to hearing the screams of feline being cooked in the back. Of course, Chinese restaurants have never used cat in their food, this is a myth, and a global one to boot.
So, for the rest of the civilized world, who enjoy an excellent culinary experience, The Red Dragon is the best. I've traveled and eaten chinese food at just about every chinese restaurant in the western world in California from Panda Express to LA's Yens Kitchen. In Ontario Canada from The Peking Restaurant in Niagara Falls, to the Mandarin Vuffet in Windsor Ontario, through Florida and British Columbia. Hands down, The Red Dragon in Zalau Romania BEATS THEM ALL.
The chef, who is Romanian and apparently was trained in Cluj Napocca prior to opening the Red Dragon, has taken traditional chinese food and added a slight hint of romanian flare.
The combination is exqusite. we began our meal with the house white wine Demi sec (semi dry) with an order of spring rolls. The presentation of the spring rolls were pleasant, and simple drawing more attention to their varying size and the fact that the roll itself was hand made from scratch, cooked golden brown and filled with the most glorious combination of meat and sprouts, it was enough to tell us we were in for a real treat.
The waitress who was a very beautiful Romanian girl, was very polite, very attentive and courteous. bringing our beef peppers and mushrooms, the chicken lo mein (number 142 on the menu) and our ginger shrimp. Each dish came with a generous portion of perfectly steamed white rice.
Although the presentation of the main course dishes were again very simple the dishes were full of color and very well laid out against the white china.
Taking each bite of the meal was as if the heavens were opened, angels had decended upon me and were kissing every part of my mouth with each bite. The texture of the food was perfect, each dish was made from fresh, organic meat and vegetables, with the finest care being taken to the perfection of the flavours combining with out meal, our wine and each other. I WILL be returning to Zalau Romania if ONLY to eat at The Red Dragon One more time in my life.
Favorite Dish: I've not tried enough, the menu is vast and contains a great number of items that would no doubtedly be equally as good as what I ordered for our first visit.

Is the city where I was born. Once a nice small town with pretty houses. Today a place that shows the fingerprints of the communist architecture but is still OK with friendly people who love to party...
