by alirom Sibiu, also Saxon in origin, is a very pretty town, with cobbled streets and pastel colored houses. The open air Museum of Folk Technology in woodland by a lake is a "must" to visit, just as the Brukenthal Art Museum, while the town is well placed for excursions to mountain villages, such as Sibiel, where there is a fascinating museum of icons. Further away near Deva stands the Corvin Castle, rebuilt in the 15th century in Gothic style by Prince Iancu Corvin, who gave it a sumptuous Knights Hall and towers and buttresses that remind one of the Chateaux de la Loire. by alirom The most picturesque street in the Upper town remains Strada Avram Iancu (1556) which connects the Council Tower, in the Large Square, with the Ursuline Church. On this street is found the oldest residential house in the city, Casa Bobel, which keeps the same look for nearly 500 years. The house at No. 9 has an arcaded court based on an Italian Renaissance design, and at the back of the yard you can still see the ruin of a defense tower. Opposite, at 9, is the former residence of Brukenthal family with a wonderful arcaded courtyard. Avram Iancu No 21 was the home of composer Gheorghe Dima (1874-1925) who wrote choral music inspired by Romanian folklore. About halfway down Avram Iancu on the left is a steep passage, Pasajul Scolii (The School Passage), which brings you below the city walls into the rutted cobbles of Strada Movilei. Strada Nicolae Balcescu (1492), the main street of the town, is today a pedestrian only shopping street lined with impressive buildings in Renaissance style. It connects Piata Mare with the newly renovated Piata Uniri. You can find here shops, a supermarket, cafes, restaurants and the 'Imparatul Romanilor' hotel and restaurant. Corner with Piata Unirii stands an Art Deco building built at beginning of XX century. The most important building on this street is at number 12, Michael Brukenthal Palace built after 1786. by Fam_Stoica Visit the Evangelic Church (located in the Huet Square). Built in the Gothic style, it was first mentioned in 1371. The tower (73m high) was built at the end of the XIVth century and the church was finally completed in 1520.It was the burial place for the Sibiu city mayors and other personalities. From 1796 burials were forbidden, the only exception being the burial of Samuel von Brukenthal in 1803. Leave a Comment

by codrutz This picture is taken recently (november 2006) in the Big Square. It was a thick fog and the new orange lights are casting a strange atmosphere. Leave a Comment

by tiganeasca Sibiu was the principal Transylvanian Saxon town, established as a fortified town in the twelfth century by settlers encouraged by the Hungarian king, Geza. This is the Piata Mare (the Great Square), the largest of three in the city center. It is fronted all round by the renovated premises of sixteenth and seventeenth century merchants' homes, as well as the nationally famous Brukenthal Museum. (The early eighteenth-century Catholic Church is in the center of the picture.) Leave a Comment

by bluecat Just walk around in the historical center of the city. You will like this old city with bulding from the last centuries in the style of the old Austro-Hungarian empire. Just arround this old part of the cities you will notice the wall which was ment to protect the town in case of war. Leave a Comment
