    Dogs and bad roads...

by Petruta Written Feb 9, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Maybe there are a little too many dogs around Sibiu. They are not dangerous, but still .... they are a problem.
On the other hand, really annoying when driving are the roads. The main streets are good, but if you get deeper in Sibiu .... ay ay ay :))

    Sibiu's main square

Sibiu has been chosen as the European Cultural Capital for 2007 which will be great for tourists visiting in 2007 but not so great for tourists traveling in 2005 and possibly 2006.

As you can see in the attached photo, one of the main draws to Sibiu, the ordinarily charming and picturesque main square, is under major construction. Signs posted around the square show a lovely picture of what it should look like when it is finished which is projected to be the end of 2005.

This didn't ruin our visit here as I knew about it before visiting but if I had to pick one place on our itinerary that I would have skipped, Sibiu would have been it.

My advice, if your itinerary is tight, is to check with the locals about the progress for when you are visiting. If you are going that way anyways, its still worth a stop.

Avoid Being Eaten by a Raptor

Attacked by Raptor in Sibiu, Romania

OK, so I am just a dumb tourist from Malibu, but I didn't take no stinking stupid pills this morning and, lo and behold, I was invited to lunch by a prehistoric raptor. Why these creatures were lurking outside the Natural History Museum and why the local gendarmes paid no heed to my bone crunching pleas remain a mystery. Give me a blood sucking vampire anytime over these babies.

Did you know that Dracula had a son?

by tiganeasca Written Aug 25, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Okay...I'm cheating a bit. But I should warn you that Mihnea the Bad is buried here. Wonderful name, eh? He might be more familiar if I told you his father's name--Vlad Tepes (also known as Dracula!). The son was buried here in the Evangelical Cathedral; he was stabbed to death after attending mass in 1510. The building was begun in 1431, apparently on the site of an earlier basilica, and not completed until 1520. It's a worth visiting the cathedral for its spectacular interior, including some exquisite woodwork and majestic art. An immense fresco of the Crucifixion can be found on the north wall. Above the fresco lies the Royal Hungarian insignia together with the apostolic cross of Silesia, the Bohemian vulture, and a lion rampant. Below the fresco areportraits of Hungary's two first Christian kings: Stephen (shown with a scepter) and Ludovic (with an
axe). (Thanks to http://www.sibiu.ro/about/EvangelicalChurch.htm -- a site you might wish to visit!)

    Sibiu is changing

    preparations for Sibiu 2007

I found Sibiu almost under construction ( was there at the end of April - 2005), due to the preparations to SIBIU 2007 - European Capital of Culture. So, some places are really a mess, like the "Piata Mare" and the "Piata Mica", so, be prepared, if you will visit Sibiu in the next months, to forget about relaxing in this spots at Sibiu.

Drunk schoolkids all around the place

    by Mr_Furious Written Jul 22, 2003

When I arrived in Sibiu on the early morning by overnight train from Sibiu, the train station was full of incredibly noisy, annoying and probably drunk youngsters. I guess I was there at the time of the year when all field trips are organised. The next day there were also many of them around the area of the Folk Museum on the outskirts of town. Not really dangerous I guess, but damn annoying!!
