Mamaliga (polenta)

by codrutz

With sarmale, instead of bread romanian use mamaliga (polenta), that home-made stuff from maize (corn flour). In rural area, mamaliga is used instead of bread when eating sour soup, fish, pork, chicken or with lamb (lamb=easter custom)

Sarmale

by codrutz

The meal in the Christmas Day (December 25th) is one of the biggest event in romanian tradition. With this occasion, families gather, some time arround very large tables, and begin a feast with some rather big portions of food. The most traditional dish are what we call sarmale, which consist basically of grounded meat with some rice, rolled in sour cabbage.click on picture to see the finished stuff! :)

How to park a car the romanian way

by Mique

While walking around in Sighisoara we found this car parked the way you see it the picture. It was so funny. And of course we could not resist taking a snapshot of it. For future reference of course.... Though Romanians can park cars in more ways then i thought possible at first, this way i've only seen once so far :-)

Be aware of the local drink

by Mique

Especially in the more rural places in Romania people will invite you to their homes very easily. And before you know it, the local drinks get on the table. Tuica (or Palinka) and other home made (or village made) alcoholic drinks. And take care, those drinks don't have a percentage of around 10%. And refusing is very hard. Luckily there usually appears food on the tabel as well. But i do remember a few occasions where walking a straight line was impossible for me to do.

Dress in layers of clothes

by Mique

Although this is always a sensible thing to do it certainly applies when you visit a romanian home (in any other time then the hot summer). Romanians like to have a warm home and i mean warm. For them a nice temperature isn't a comfy 21-22 degrees but more like 25-26. So you should be able to take of some clothes without feeling embarrased. So don't don that think winter sweater without wearing a t-shirt under it...

We got to the civilized world finally

by Astralka

After several days we came to a camping site and met humans ! There were funny babuskas who were selling cakes. In spite of the language barrier, first time in Romania we were understood. Few people spoke some English. Haha, a man was saying'No camera ! No camera !' We thought he got nervous because we were videotaping him. So we consoled him not to worry about it, that the recording will be only for a private use. Later sb. cleared it out. The man was shouting that there were no rooms available for us "kamera'' = room in Romanian language. And the best memory, we met a group of the Czech tourists. The fridge in their bus was stuffed with Gambrinus beer. It was a home welcome ! We were changing beer for cakes with the locals, but later regretted, oh yes. Those babuska's know what a business is )

Easter Celebration

by ovidiu_nan

Easter is undoubtedly the main holiday in the spring, and Romanians are celebrating it every year with the same devotion and respect as their ancestors. Maybe the big city has somewhat replaced the old tradition of going to the church after a six-week lent with the simple surprise of eating Easter eggs while waiting for the Easter bunny. However, people all over the country are still very religious and willing to pass the custom to the next generations and to share it with the foreigners who are curious about it. The holy Easter days are a remembrance of the holy story of the Resurrection. They are also the occasion for people get together these days and enjoy the hours spent with their families while eating traditional food. Here are the most important aspects of the Romanian traditional Lent and Easter days. They made up a unique event that attracts many foreign tourists year by year....

Tipping...

by Tom1971

Tipping in restaurants is not the norm in Romania. If the service is particularly good then around 20,000 lei is plenty. Don't even think about leaving 10% of a large bill-outside really flashy places this wil be percieved as very extravagant.

Try to learn the national...

by PashenkaMD

Try to learn the national dance or the language or the cuisine because if you do, you will be seen as a 'good tourist,' not just a stupid american or whatever nation you are from. (I know that most Non-Americans know about what I am speaking...!)
