Language!! From experience...

by Mr_Furious

Language!! From experience I've learned there is a way to make up for the clunzy way you've just ordered food or tried to order a beer. Thank you!! Really, if you say thank you in Romanian (multsumesc) most people will produce a smile and say goodbye to you in a friendly way. Try it, it works!!

When going outside cities,...

by Lamanai

When going outside cities, there is one thing you should not forget. It's cigarettes. They can actually do for a lot of money, so you can save a lot. A pocket of usual (not imported) cigarettes is quite cheap over there, but poverty in the country causes lack of everything, especially in some parts of Romania. For cigarettes you can hire a guide, get the cheapest accomodation or just do a good thing making someone happy. People are very greatful over here. Be prepared to such situations that children beg cigarettes, too. Mostly, they are delegated by parents to do it. Anyway, children do not ask only for cigarettes. Especially in bigger cities, there are lots of them bothering you for quite a long time, demanding money and ready to follow you all over the city with innocent, empty looks in their eyes. Sounds malefic, but it is better to ignore them. If you give them just a shirt button,...

In Romania when you meet...

by 80_days

In Romania when you meet somebody, you usually shake hands, but don't be surprised if somebody hugs and kisses you. Romanians are a latin nation and they have a latin temper. In restaurants it's important to give a tip, you will get better service. In general money can help you everywhere.

by Romanian_Bat

1. Men generally shake hands, while women kiss or hug each other to greet. However it is still familiar in certain situations for men also to hug each other and this is not regarded as a sexual offence. 2. When you want to give someone flowers, bear in mind that one flower is generally only given to the person you love, and then bigger odd numbers are welcome as a gift to anyone. Even numbers of flowers are only given to the dead. Therefore beware! 3. When visiting churches, it is familiar for people to wear either long dresses or long trousers; shorts are traditionally not acceptable; in a church usually women are kindly asked to cover their hair with a headkerchief.

Romanian isn't really a hard language

by tiganeasca

Like almost anywhere, the visitor who learns some Romanian will reap enormous dividends. Romanian is a Romance, not a Slavic, language. (This is important. Romanians are proud of their heritage and particularly of not being Slavs.) If you speak any Italian, you will be pleasantly surprised by the similarities. It is not a difficult language and the joy many Romanians will express when they hear you make an effort in their language more than repays your few minutes learning how to say 'please' and 'thank you.' My experience--as a non-Romanian speaker--is that even someone who speaks a bare minimum or no Romanian at all, will probably have very little difficulty. People are usually eager to help if you give them the chance. A handy little dictionary is always good for those words that just don't translate into gestures or somehow manage to defy your best efforts. Multumesc!(I picked up...

Romania's cultural beaty comes...

by bluecat

Romania's cultural beaty comes from the mixture of cultures, both from an ethnical point of view and from a time perspective. So there are many ethnic groups living in my country, influencing each other's culture but still with very distinct features of their own. But also present times meet with the past which seems to be the right time for the villages which still preserv most of the old traditions. As an example you will see all over Romania Othodox, Catholic and Protestant Churches side by side as well as Mosks and Synagogues.

by rkyle2

The water in Romania is usually fine to drink. (The Romanians drink it don't they?) It is your stomach that is not used to the microbes! But, if you'll only be there a week or two, it is best to drink bottled water.

Be a friend , and you will...

by Norwegianno

Be a friend , and you will find lots of friendly people ! A still stay in touch with some of the friends I meet - over the Net, letter or phone - great !Pity I didn't go there in the summer time though ! But I got to celebrate newyears eve with some young people from the local pentecost church. People are really poor - so if you can - make a difference. Enormous poverty - especally in the villages.
