A 'martisor' is a small...

by Irina

A 'martisor' is a small decorative object that women receive from men and wear as a broach between the 1st and the 8th of March of every year. The 1st of March is the 'Martisor' day in Romania. In my country, men still behave adorably 'politically incorrect'! They are very thoughtful when it comes to women! Apart of kissing the right hand when meeting a lady and other 'oddities' from an Occidental point of view, there are a few traditional customs, like the Martisor, when they give small nice gifts to women. To see more 'martisoare' and to find out more about them, please visit my 'Martisor' travelogue.

I have to admit that in the overhelming majority of Romanian restaurants with more or less long menus you can not eat much more else than pork steak and french fries. Which is a shame and should be severly punished by the Ministry of Culture, because the Romanian cuisine is rich in more ways than you (or me) even imagine. I love to read old Romanian reciepes books, especially those written by Pastorel Teodoreanu. This guy was a good Romanian writer but a too great connoisseur in wines and foods to leave us more than some essays about nightlife in the between-wars Romania and some receipes. His writing talent - and a tremendous sense of humour - are very obvious even in those minor forms of literature.(This tip could also figure as a Tourist Trap tip, or Restaurnats tip. You choose!)

The 'etiquette' in Romanian villagesYou might be surprised when crossing villagers in the street, when they will say 'Buna ziua' (Hello) to you, even if you haven't met before. The 'etiquette' is to say hello to everybody you meet on the street, as everybody knows everybody and if they don't recognize you, they think you must be some friend or relative of somebody they know, which means they already know you somehow. If you want to be polite, answer them with Buna ziua aswell and if you want to be very polite, be the first to say Buna ziua.

Do't refuse a coup of Transilvanian brandy 'palinca' . If you are intending to visit a church , especially on the countryside try to be as respectuous as possible . In many places the religion is also a way of life .Entring in a church with your head covered will be considered an offense .Tipping in restaurants is a common practice 10%.Please note that what can be consideret old fashion , or obsolite on the West in terms of 'code de bone manieres' (kissing the hand of an old lady for example) , in Romania is a sign of good education .

by Szilardo

Romania is a very poor country so people will know that you are a tourist by the way you dress. People will constantly ask you 'Valuta', they are asking you to exchange Dollars for Lei, some will try to cut you a bad deal. so go only to exchange offices, you get a good rate.

When going to visit someone's house make sure to stop on the way and get uneven numbered flowers for the hostess and foreign liquor for the host.
