    Natural History Museum 'Grigore Antipa'

by ardelean Written Mar 21, 2012 109 reviews

This museum has been refurbished recently and is of international class. The displays are stunning and one exhibit is unique. There is a audio guide in various languages. There are information displays in Romanian and, for the most part, English.

Unfortunately the website appears to be in Romanian only.

UPDATE: The museum was closed for modernization between 2009-2010. With an investment of 13 mil. EUR the museum will reopen in 2011 with better interiors, halls and exhibits, many of them modern, with multimedia explanations. A new must see for Bucharest in 2011!

More than 300,000 artifacts and specimens are on display, including a dinosaur fossil. A whole floor is dedicated to sea life and features examples of whales, dolphins and seals. The museum also contains a beautiful butterfly collection.

Grigore Antipa Natural History Museum(to the back)

Antipa Natural History Museum was established in 1831. The building hosting it nowadays was set between 1904 and 1906. It was designed by Mihail Rocco, while the facade was designed by Architect Grigore Cerchez.

The museum depicts the evolution of life on Earth ever since it appeared until the contemporary man came onto the stage. Among the 300,000 pieces on exhibit, I can mention here the 4.50 m. tall mammal related to the actual elephant (Dinotherinum Gigantissimum). The museum is open daily 10.00-18.00, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
