Tandarica Theatre is the only theatre in Bucharest that has plays for kids only. My parents used to take me and my brother here at least 4 times a year to see different plays. I can imagine now how hard is was for them to stay with us there throughout the whole show, watching puppets and listening to the story being told on stage. I also understand now why my parents took turns taking us there :)
There are 2 locations of the theatre: one on Calea Victoriei (called Victoria Hall) and one on Eremia Grigorescu Street (called Lahovari Hall).
So if you travel with kids, you may want to get tickets to a performance here. It is something unique that the kids will enjoy seeing, even if they do not understand the language.

The Odeon Theatre, one of Bucharest’s leading theatre companies, was founded in 1946 as Giulesti Theatre. It moved to its current location, the Sala Majestic, in 1974. It is a repertory theatre with a company of 42 actors. The auditorium has 300 seats.
In the 17th century, the location of the present Odeon Theatre was the estate Dumitrache Ghica. It was a part of the dowry his wife, Maria Vacarescu, had brought him. In 1768 the house of a boyar was built there. In 1813, Ioan Caragea rented the estate to establish his Court there. Next year, he also rented the Slatineanu House (built on the spot of the present Casa Capsa. The Court remained here until 1825.
In 1860, the Ghica Houses were bought by Nicolae Lahovary, who owned them until nationalization in 1948. From 1860 to 1945 different institutions, including The Youth Club, The Mercury Society, The National Party and a brewery, rented the old Ghica House.
On the north side of the estate, a building was built. It became the headquarters of the famous newspaper L’Independance Roumanie
In the ‘30s, the Theatre Hall was enlarged.The 1945 bombardments damaged the building, which was renovated afterwards.
In 1974, The Comedy Hall of the National Theatre became The Majestic Hall of The Giulesti Theatre. In 1990, The Majestic Hall became The Odeon Theatre.
In 2002, the theatre was renovated with stone brought from Vlatza quarry, in Bulgaria.

Teatrul Naţional was founded in 1852 as Teatrul cel Mare din Bucureşti (The Grand Theatre of Bucharest). The current National Theatre building opened in 1973 about half a kilometre away from the original theatre in Calea Victoriei, which is now the site of the Novotel.
It forms part of a complex that also includes the Romanian National Operetta, an art gallery and several bars, including the massive rooftop terrace La Motoare. Inside the building are the following spaces: Sala Mare with 1,155 seats; Sala Amfiteatru with 353 seats;
Sala Atelier with up to 219 seats ; Sala Studio 99,with up to 99 seats.
Currently, the musical Chicago is showing in Sala Mare and prices range from 25 to 50 lei, which is much cheaper than Broadway or the West End.

This is yet another good theatre in Bucharest. Check the schedule of plays on the website below. The theatre is located on Calea Victoriei boulevard, in a small but nice square with a water fountain and a monument representing Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the most important man in Turkey's history (the country which was the Otoman Empire which conquered some of the former Romanian countries).

The comedy theatre in Bucharest is my favourite because my favourite movies and of course plays are comedies. From all theatres in Bucharest this is the one I have attended to the most plays.
I guess it's not pretty practical for a tourist to get a ticket if he/she doesn't understand romanian, because the play is not subtitled in english :)) (some humor here)
