Fortified churches : Hosman

by zaffaran

On your way from Sibiu to Sighisoara (along kind of side road via Aginta) turn right from the road to the village towards the church you can see and don't get frightened when you find yourself literally off the beaten path. We left the car by the gate and went to see the graveyard. While walking aruond we saw a young man going towards us. It was Joachim- a very friendly local who provided us with information on local history, community etc. and let us into the church and up the tower (oh my God, if I had known that we would have to climb up the ladders!).It was such a nice and informative visit that we regretted we stayed at the guest house because it occurred that Joachim and his wife also offer accommodation- like every Saxonian community in Romania.

Get off the main roads

by MariusG

Assuming that you have your own wheels, plunge into the remote areas, where the paved road turns into mud road and continue further deep countryside until you see ducks and chicken walking on road which carries only the signs of the passing carts. There you will see wells in front of each house and peasants working their fields with bare hands, while the richer ones using horses or ox.

Wander in the villages!

by delavue

Although I wish we could have stayed longer than a few days, wandering in the village of Maramures in Northern Romania was incredible. The houses are titled in a specific way, mural copies of ancient Roman paintings are painted on the sides of homes, and villagers and gypsies in colorful dress go about their business amongst chickens, hogs, stray dogs and donkeys. Yup, you're in the country.

A regular sight

by Mique

in many small villages this is a very normal sight. Dirt roads, peopel that carry all sorts of things on a horse and carriage. It looks pittoresque when it is nice sunny weather. But looks completely different when it starts to get cold and snowy. When the dirt roads turn to mud pools and traffic starts to become impossilbe. In the village where this picture was taken there live mostly older people now. The younger ones just can't get to the city in wintertime even though it is just 30 km away. So they all live in the city permanently.

A day trip to the highest peak in the Rodnian Alps

by kikalena

In Nothern Romania mountains don't have any infrastructure. If you don't like hiking with a tent or if you don't have a lot of time, you can take a "light" day trip to the peak Pietrosul (2.303 meters above the sea level) from the town called Borsa. There shouldn't be a problem with finding accommodation even in the high season. The guest houses or hotels varry in prices and standard, from very expensive to quite cheap. The town itself is dirty and boring (despite an orthodox church and a Jewish cementary you can visit, there is nothing to do). But the view of the mountain Pietrosul against the sky above the town is really amazing! The trail to the second higest mountain in Romania strats almost in the centre of the town. But after an hour walk along it you can find yourself in a different world: you are surrounded by amazing mountain scenery, you go past old wooden cottages, sometimes...

A trip by old-fashioned train

by kikalena

If you are in nothern Romania, you really must go by this train. The experience is amazing as it goes slowly along the mountain valley, you have time to admire all these stunning views in the heart of the savage mountains called Maramures. You can also admire along the way beautifully situated woden villagesIn the past this narrowed railwayed train carried wood mainly. Now, it does the same out of season and if you are lucky, you can be taken as well! But in the high season it is also fun to go when it takes tourists only! The train departs from Viseus de Sues twice a day : 8 am and 3 pm. Make sure you are at the station at least half an hour before departure! In the high season there might be too many people to be taken by this small train. The whole trip takes a few hours. The last stop is Faina, and if you take the train in the morning you can have an hour and a half break (before the...

Admire the wooden villages and local customs

by kikalena

The whole Iza Valley in Maramures (northren Romania) is worth visiting esp. on a Sunday as people are dressed in their traditional clothes when they go to orthodox churches. The most remarkable village in the valley is called Iued. If you want to see what the place looks like have a look at may Romanian travelogues (portraits of people). As far as I know it is possible to find accomoodation in the village at local people 's homes.I stayed in the village Botiza nearby. We just went to the shop and asked about accommodation, and after a while we had a few offers. Our hosts turned out to be very friendly and warm.

The fortified church of Aiud

by Mique

Aiud is about half an hour from Alba Iulia and it makes an excellent side trip. There is a small but interesting fortified church here. Unlike the ones at Harman and Prejmer this church has very limited places for the locals to take shelter. But the walls and watch towers should 've provided enough shelter from hostile forces if those occasions arose. On the day i visited in october there was also a festival of some sorts. Unfortunately it started to rain so heavily that watching and listening to the performances wasn't an option for me. I just made a bee-line for a bar to dry up a bit..

Drobeta-Turnu Severin

by Mique

This town doesn't appear in many guide books but it has a few gems that make it nice to visit for a day. For one thing, there is an interesting museum with a park where you can see many roman remains including one of the 2 remaining pillars of the Traian bridge over the Danube. There are also castle ruins from medieval times to be found here. And a still functioning medieval water-tower. Unfortunately they will not let you get in and climb this tower... Make a right turn at Bucea (1.)

by Levente_D

If you make a right turn at Bucea you will find yourself on a road going uphill near the small river called "Iad" which means hell!As you go upstream the river you will see some great places and if you go during summer you may even take a refreshing bath in the cold river!
