WATCH an OSTRITCH FARM in .... TRANSYLVANIA

by robertop

In Sirna,a village located in a wonderful valley you may find a good hotel, name of which comes from the farm of ostrich which is just near to it. For families with children but also for any other tourists dropping by in this oasis of peacefulness and natural splendour, this will be a adventure.Sirna is off the beaten path,a quiet place, where you can watch the elegant ostritches, play with tame donkeys or just sit around in the green grass, look at the blue sky and to the mountains ,feel like in paradise.I can strongly recommend this location

The citadel of Harman

by Mique

This is a definite off the beaten path. When i got here in october i needed to ring for the gatekeeper to let me in. But again it was worth it. The church is from the 15th century and still in use by the people of Harman today. Also this citadel was build by the people to protect themselves. The warden told me that it was build by the Saxon people and that only they could get refuge here in time of need. The romanians and the hungarians in the region had to take care of themselves. They were not allowed inside.Harman doesn't take very long to visit. Together with Prejmer it makes for an excellent (half) day trip. Minibuses leave from the square in front of the citadel every half hour back to Brasov.

The citadel of Prejmer

by Mique

Prejmer is on the Unesco world heritage list. And for good reason. Although not so much visited, i met only 2 people just before i left, i liked it very very much. The church is from the 13th century surrounded by a 15th century wall. It was build by the people of Prejmer to defend themselves from invaders. In the 4,5 meter thick walls are 727 cells in which the families could take shelter in times of siege. And the whole structure of ladders, steps and gangplanks makes it a true labyrint. Great to watch and luckily one is allowed to climb on it as well. Some of the cell doors are open so you can have a peek inside. It is close to Brasov. Take a personal train to a little station called Ilieni which is one stop before Prejmer. When you get off here, walk to the village. If in doubt, it means cross the rails and follow the dirth road to the curve and beyond. At the end of the road, turn...

The red rock of Sebes

by Mique

Sebes is about half an hour by bus from Alba Iulia and i went here to check out the place when i stayed in AI. It is a small town but it has some interesting things to see. For one thing in the centre is a very old and interesting looking church. Unfortunately i found the gates closed. Which was a pity, it looked like the church has just appeared out of some mistery book or something. There is also a medieval wall. It doesn't surround much anymore nowadays but it is imbedded in people's gardens and even their houses. So following the wall can become a bit of a quest in itself. The last thing to see here is the red rock. I've forgotten the romanian name unfortunately. It is about 4 km outside of Sebes. A very strange sight to see the green hills and then this large part of exposed rock in all kinds of pink-reddish colours.

Bucegi Mountains

by rollinstone81

We stayed in Sinaia, which we didn't find too interesting, but it made a good base for hiking in the Bucegi Mountains. You can take the cable car up to the plateau and then hike there and hike down, or up or whichever way you like. I thought it was really beautiful. There is a huge cross on the plateau, it is some WW1 memorial.

Transylvanian Alps

by glenn57

The Transylvanian Alps are part of the Carpathians, and tend to be referred to as the Carpathians by Romanians. The Carpathians form a backward 'L' through Romania, and the area north and west of the Carpathians is Transylvania. Wallachia is the area to the south of the bachward 'L', while Moldavia is the area to the east of the backward 'L'. There are many hiking trails throughout the Romanian Carpathians, and they are dotted with huts where you can sleep at night. The accompanying photo is taken on a trail in the Transylvanian Alps near the town of Zarnesti (which itself is a short train ride from Brasov).

Haywagons

Wooden wagons pulled by horses are a common sight in Romania. I photographed this haywagon as it was making its way down a street in Zarnesti, near Brasov. Another common sight is gypsy families riding in wooden wagons.

nature!

Many of the tourists miss the most beautiful part of Romania because you don't have where to get informed from(here aren't touristical information offices). One of this parts is "Transfagarasan".I bet you wonder what is it...how shell I put it...it's a road wich crosses the mountains, better said that crosses Fagaras mountain. You have an umbelieveble view, and "up there" you will find a little lake called "Balea" and a little cabin. The only incovenient is that it is prety cold, but I gues you would take an extra cout for a wonderful view, wouldn't you?

the Polish minority in Romania

by Polska

To me it was quite a surprise to learn some time ago that in Northern Romania there is a Polish minority (yes, quite a shame, but... better late than never!). They are quite well organised, in every Polish village there's a place Polish tourists can sleep at (the whole web is named Casa Polona - Dom Polski; the organisation's "headquarters" is the city of Suceava). What particularily stroke me was the fact they are still using the language :) aha, and the reason for their existence there is that in the 19th century some Polish workers were implanted in Romania to build there salt mines :)

Prejmer

by AndreSTGT

Prejmer is a quaint village just out of Brasov. The main attraction here is a beautiful and extremely well-preserved 15th century citadel. You can still walk through the quarters of the former occupants and get lost in the mazy corridors of the medieval building.
