Make a right turn at Bucea!

by Levente_D

If you are in Romania and you go from Oradea towards Cluj or futher on the way between Oradea and Cluj you'll pass a village called Bucea! In that village make a right turn towards Bulz! Make this turn if you have time and you want to have a refreshing swim in a mountain lake! Even is not a natural lake, it has is very nice clean water, situated in nice mountain area Lake Lesu worth a stop! You can stay over night as well in one of the private pensions or in the camping at the upper end of the lake!Tip: The way there don't let yourself frightened by the "quality" of the road!

Castle in Bran, NOT the real castle of Dracula

by seamus_waldr

Visit the real castle of Dracula, it is NOT the castle in Bran!!! (even thought the Romainan tourist board what you to think it is ;-)However, Bran is a nice castle :Bran castle is perched about 100 yards up a hill, on the outskirts of Bran. It is picturesque, Disney probably modelled their fairy tale castles on something like this. Claiming to be students and hiding our cameras, we pay rock bottom prices to get in. Up a dirt track we reach the castle. There are no other tourists. It is incredible to think that this is one of the tourist attractions of Romania and there is no commercialisation here at all. The ticket booth is simply that, a box with a window. Inside the entrance door to the castle is a board telling you the history of the castle in Romanian and English. At no point does it mention Vlad. This history lesson is really interesting though. Stepping into the courtyard, we...

Go to Maramures or Moldavia, Northern Romania

by lonely_traveller

I didn't go there, but I heard that Maramures is the best place to experience the real hospitality of a traditional Romanian village. Also, Moldavia is famous for the wooden monasteries dotted around the area.

Most travellers miss the entire region around Hunedoara. However, if you have some time to kill on your way through, get off the train and stay a couple nights in the area. The train station is in Deva, the capital of the region. In any guidebook it will mention a small something about Sarmesegetuza, the capital of Roman Dacia. It is located in a very quiet, peaceful part of the country and is mostly restored. It is a hired car away from Deva. The man who runs the museum doesn't speak much English however. The botanical gardens/marshes in Sinai (15 minutes by buses found at the train station for 30000 lei) are spectacular. You have to see them to believe them. The ruins at Deva are very cool, especially at sunset. Walk down the McDonalds street and you'll seen them on your right. Finally, the Lake Cincis is very much a gem-- the lake flooded a medieval village that stands today in the...

Black Sea Shore

by Pinoy

The Black Sea Shore, a beautiful Romanian Riviera, situated in Constanta county. This county also concetrates 60% of the international tourism of Romania. The uniqueness of this is the combination of a series of factors (pleasant atmosphere, elegance, and distinction of hotels, various leisure possibilities, natural cure factors) and turning the resorts in real oases of relaxation and health. For instance, this Mangalia beach resort situated in the southernmost of the Romanian Black Sea shore and is the only place in the country where in winter remains above 0 degress centigrade. It has a mild climate, similar to the Mediterranean one, with early springs and late autumns. Mangalia is the only seaside resort with mineral water springs (sulphur, mezothermal and radioactive).

Constanta

by Pinoy

Constanta is the most important Romanian port on the Black Sea. The real development of the city began in 1878, once Debrudja was integrated into Romania. King Charles gave it a new life at the beginning of the 20th century, as port and resort. Modern houses built next to the Greek ruins (over 2000 years old) before the Romans.

German villages

by rainero

Around Sighisoara (and probably manyother cities in Transilvania too) there aredeserted villages of the german minoritywho disappeard after the revolution...I mean they are empty now for around ten to twelve years. Only some roma families are living in many villages now. A quite bizarre feeling if you are thereWe did a hiking tour about 3 days around Sighisoara with a tent. Good trip.

Suceava and the Painted Monasteries

by dkoishi

Most of people that visit Romania stay most of time in Transylvania.Despite of that not be bad at all (Sighisoara and Brasov are very pleasant towns), I think the best part of my trip was Suceava (that has nice attractions in the city itself, as well an interesting and good National History Museum) and the travel to the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina that are UNESCO listed. To get to them are not so easy, but also not so complicated. You just need to allow, 3 or 4 days to complete the circuit, cause the timetable of the buses are not very good for tourists (unless you like to wake up very early!)To Humor and Voronet, it's possible to walk (6 and 4km respectively), cars most of times are full and don't stop. You can bargain cabs too. It was not expensive at all (around 2E), but walk is very pleasant throught a nice countryside villages.

This photo isn't my fondest...

by cyrus_irani

This photo isn't my fondest memory - but it was the most incredible. You won't EVER come across this place unless you take personel trains from Sighisoara to Sibiu. Most Romanians know about it but NEVER imagined actually going there. This is what remains of the former 'carbosin' factory in Copsa Mica. Until it was shut down in the mid 90s, this town was the most polluted place in all of Eastern Europe. There is a National Geographic article from June 1991 - you won't believe the photos. Thankfully, there is no longer 'black snow' mixed with arsenic raining down on the town residents. But the ghost remains and will always haunt me. I put this here not to make people go 'yuck'. It's important to realize there is something called REALITY and there is evidence that nobody can hide. Fortunately, the government is trying to clean this place up, but many others remain, reminders of the...
