The Transfagarasan Road

by codrutz

The Transfagarasan RoadGoing from Bucharest trough the valley ofthe Arges River, after visiting Curtea de Arges and it’s great Monastery, after Vidraru Lake and the great VidraruDam you’ll find yourself on the highest romanian road, crossing theFagaras mountains. Be prepared, the weather is not always nice on this road, open only a few months a year due to snowfall, also be gentle to yourpassangers because there are A LOT of curves to follow. Make sure your car isfilled and set up, and admire the mountains by rolling up in your car. It’sonly 90 km long, but it snakes up 1500 meters, reaching up to 2042 metersaltittude. Also, it features a 845m long tunnel under the Negoiu and Moldoveanu peak. After the tunnel, on the other sideof the mountain, the highest point at Balea Lake, then down to Balea Cascada (waterfall). At theend of the Transfagarasan Road, some 40km west and you have reached...

We stopped by the roadside for...

by Yubert

We stopped by the roadside for a bio-break, a farmer and his family were working in their field, upon seeing us, started singing American songs. After they finished their field work, they started to move towards our bus. Unfortunately we were trying to take off before this herd of cattle passed us. The farmer and his family rode their wagon along side us and waved as we left. They sure were very friendly and I wished we had stopped and talked to them.Click on the picture to see the animated GIF.

Photo is the house that I rented.Taken in part from my Travelogue: Journal & Field Report #1Each morning, I hear the bells on the Romania Orthodox and other churches echo about town. The house where I am staying is 400 years old. It is just a thirty second walk from the house where Dracula was born. It is cute and quaint, though not up to standard hotel fare. I imagine most Americans would not be all that comfortable with these accommodations, but I am pefectly content. The furniture is not as ancient as the walls, but it is old. I asked the landlady how old the marble topped bureau was. She answered from a European perspective and said, 'Not very old, it was made in the late 1800s.' A bread oven made of stone sits in a corner of the living room. It has been converted to gas and is used to heat the house during the day. The oven is still used occasionally for making bread and heating...

Photo is the house that I rented.Taken in part from my Travelogue: Journal & Field Report #1Let me tell you a little about the place where I am staying in Sighisoara. I'm living within the walls of a well-preserved medieval town. It's a town of approximately 30,000 people called, Sighisoara (pronounced see-ghe-shwa-ra). Located in the region of Romania known as Transylvania, it probably comes closest to what most visitors think an old Transylvanian town should look like. The city is still surrounded by medieval ramparts and the winding streets are lined with old buildings. It is a charming town of pastel colored buildings on cobblestone streets. The atmosphere of Sighisoara is laid-back and peaceful. The people seem and friendly and helpful. Unfortunately poverty abounds, especially among the Gypsy parents and their children who wander town in hopes of a job, or to beg for food.

Get out into the countryside....

Get out into the countryside. Take advantage of their home stay program. Most Romanian travel agents can arrange it. You stay in someone's home, eat with them. They'll take you around town and show you what people do.

THE HIGHEST POINT IN ROMANIA...

by marko727

THE HIGHEST POINT IN ROMANIA IS MOUNT NEGOIU. ELEVATION IS 8360 FEET (2549 METERS). HERE IS SOME INFO FROM THE WEB: Supposed to be the hardest peak on Fogaras-Mountain-trail but it is still fairly easy for anyone who has ever tried climbing. However the weather might make it nasty as it did for us. It can be climbed two ways on a marked route (red), from which the western one is the harder (narrow ridge of rock) while the eastern one takes a more comfortable way. I recommend the eastern started from the resque hut one hour before the sunset (or sunrise) thus you can watch it from the peak that is a very pleasent experience. Both ways are secured by chains at places.'

A Gypsy wagon near a tomb of sorts at the base of Bran castle. A typical Transylvanian country scene. But do not be fooled, larger towns like Cluj have Discos, like Deasal, that hop all night long and are cutting edge, oh , the crowd can dance and drink and party all NIGHT!!!! They wear the latest fashions, and they tend to look like Dracula! They love wearing RED!

According with my oppinion at least till now comming in Romania with a tourist agency is not the best way to see and to know the country . When you come in Romania try to forget the kitch , try to forget about Dracula . The wild places untouch by the comercial spirit still can be founded. I would like to give you specific names and places to visit but to be onest the list is endless...anyway try to visit the site www.alpinet.ro
