-10C in winter and +35C in summer

by DSwede

The winter in Romania can be cold. It has a reputation of being one of the colder regions of Europe in the winter. Temperatures will hover freezing quite commonly. Many of the buildings are older, so they can be prone to drafts and/or poor heating. On the opposite side of things, the summer can be very hot and humid. The climate can be very similar to the northern areas of the USA Midwest (-10C in winter and +35 in summer). May will be quite comfortable, but by the time June and July set it, temperatures can be hot.

Pack light and bring comfortable shoes

by monica71

A backpack for daily trips and a duffel bag (expandable if possible, so you have room for presents to take back home with you) or a suitcase . Summers and hot in Romania, so if you travel during the summer months, make sure you have a pair of good sandals (good for walking a lot, I mean!), sport shoes, few T-shirts, 1 nice shirt or a dress, 2 pair of pants (1 light color, 1 medium-dark color), 2 pair of shorts. If you travel to the mountain side, make sure you have a sweater also since the nights get cold up there. A sweater is a good idea for traveling in the city if you visit during spring, fall or winter. If you travel during the spring or fall, make sure you have a rain jacket with you also. During winter, get warm boots, warm jacket, gloves, scarf and a hat. no need to bring them from home; there are plenty of stores from where you can get all you need.If you take prescription...

Unless you want a dose of Montezumas revenge, invest in a portable water filter or at least take some puri-tabs or boil the water. Spring water from one of Romania's many, many mineral springs is fine in my experience but the tap water is diabolical. If you are travelling in Spring, Summer or Autumn, especially when out in the great outdoors, make sure you take some strong insect repellant as mosquitoes are a big problem in some areas, especially around the delta. If you plan on going hiking or climbing in the mountains, be aware that instant downpours and even snowstorms can happen ALL YEAR ROUND in the higher ranges, so go prepared. Be warned-medical treatment for uninsured travellers can be very expensive in Romania. Knowing people in the right places is the best antidote for any mishaps. All major towns have places where you can develop film, however shops with APS facilities are...

....don't forget your digicam!

by hydronetta

This depends on your needs and the way you decide to travel! Umbrella or/and a raincoat are essential as weather can be rainy even in early summer. If you come in Romania in June, keep in mind that weather can reach +30 C, so shortsleeves are needed. Everything is available. Pharmacies are numerous at least in large cities Memory, memory, memory for your digicam! In 11 days we took more than 1000 photos. The frescoes in wooden churches and the painted monasteries was our greatest photo fetich

Mosquito spray

by kelmck23

If going in the summer, bring alot of cool clothes. I was told it didnt get that hot, but it sure does, the average is 30 degrees this year. The mosquito spray is vital, I didnt bring any last time, and was brutally attacked. We couldnt find spray anywhere, and had a allergic reation to the bites. It was not to pleasant. I heard that they now carry spray, but I still am gonna pack some next time.

Toilet Paper, It's better than American Express.

by roomania

Okay so the notion of packing toilet paper may seem a bit trifling to those travelers accustomed to the Four Seasons, the Penisula or even the Hilton line of International hotels. Nevertheless, in Romania, I recommend that you travel with no less than half a roll of toilet paper with you at all times. Similar to most European countries be prepared to pay to use a toilet. However, in Romania, after having paid to use the facilities, you'll be handed two sheets of what you may assume is sandpaper, based on the texture. Needless to say, if you find yourself uh... a bit sensitive or require more than two squares, bring your own. Also, I recommend, packing a bit of purell or some other hand sanitizer with you as well, as most toilets (turkish or othewise) do not have facilites for handwashing.

Take a good rucksack. All here is for those, who would spent their time in the mountains, as you can definitely buy everything down in the towns. In hot summer you will need light but good fixing shoes (no bitumen streets) and some T-shirts and shorts. But if you are visiting churches wear better trousers. 1.antidiarrheal's2.Who was not vaccinated against jaundice, should be.3.Never eat some fuits or anything you couldn't wash by yourself.4.Take with you every toiletry you need, there is nothing to buy. Not everywhere, but in the mountains where I was. In Banat villages is impossible to buy any batteries or films. Be carefull where you will stay for the night, there are many robber bandes and they are so good in stealing your things that you can wake up in the morning and see that you even have no sleeping-bag on!I'm little bit kidding but they are really good!!And be sure you don't...

Pack light

Try to get there with just one carry-on bag so you can use your luggage allowance on the plane to bring two big boxes full of souvenirs home! There's lots of walking on uneven pavement and cobblestone streets in Romania, so I suggest no sandals, opting instead for comfortable sneakers or shoes. If you plan a telecabina ride up the mountain, make sure to wear warm, water-resistant footwear and bring an extra pair of socks if there's snow. Bring your own toilet paper. The paper in Romania ranged from the rare sight of regular, Charmin-type (soft) to the more common offering of a brown, rough roll that often doubled as the paper towels used to dry your hands at the sink. Bring your own hair conditioner, most of the places we stayed had shampoo, but no conditioner. Bring plenty of memory for digital cameras and bring plenty of batteries. We couldn't find lithium batteries and were eating...

Waterproof everything when backpacking

by Astralka

Yes, somethimes the rain does not stop when you pray. It was raining for a couple of days without stopping and we had nothing dry left. However there was no village on our way. A good lesson - always leave your last T-shirt for a festive occasion dry :) rather walk in wet but sleep in dry one, it will not stop raining, believe me Take some desinficient stuff for water. Local water was not drinkable. My friends were mostly drinking spirits, but they have forgotten to rinse the fruits they bought at the market. They washed it in water instead and they felt worse than ever! When hiking we were often drawing water from the natural springs. However not all of us were disciplined, he. Though the water looked clean, when we walked 300 metres up, we saw a family of cows washing their feet there. The next few days we could not move forward as our three friends were locked on the toiletes. We...

Bring cash instead of traveler's checks. Even if you plan to visit only large cities - something that I would advise against, personally - I would still suggest that you consider cash. (It is all I bring). Cash is king, especially US dollars. If you do bring cash, bring clean, relatively crisp notes. You will not be able to exchange torn currency or old and dirty bills.Remember, too, that inflation is high in Romania, so you will receive a wad of bills in return. The largest commonly circulating bill is the 100,000 lei note (about $3). You will get a few, plus a big pile of 50,000 and 20,000 and even 10,000 notes. The smallest ones (5,000 and 2,000) are useful for tips and small change. Coins are irrelevant. You will never have trouble changing dollars or finding booths and windows throughout the country, all of whom post their rates. You may do slightly better or worse, but rates are...
