N/A: If you eat with a family

by deeper_blue

If possible try eating some home made food with Romanians, they are extremely hospitable and generous. Chances are they could make you polenta (boiled corn meal), sarmale (sausages cooked in cabbage leaves) or ciorba (home made soup) Sarmale

The food is great; sadly, most restaurants aren't

by tiganeasca

This is a GENERAL tip: it applies to most--but certainly not ALL restaurants in Romania.Don't go to Romania for the restaurants. (Bucharest is the only exception I have found so far.) Please don't misunderstand me: there is absolutely wonderful food in Romania but the odds are against your finding it in restaurants. I am not saying that it does not exist at all; in fact, I have had a few excellent meals in restaurants (a lunch in Cluj, a dinner in Iasi--check my pages on those two cities for my entries), but the best food you will find--like the best horinca or tuica (fruit, usually plum, brandy)--is in peoples' homes. Most restaurants, especially once you leave the biggest cities (and occasionally even there) serve a menu that doesn't vary much. (There are some very good reasons for this and it IS changing--but slowly.) Everywhere. And some of Romania's most famous dishes are virtually...

Pizza K

by msforbes

Okay, this was again in Sighetu Marmentiei, just so you know at the time there was only one other place to get lunch, I would like to say hello to the staff working there, the food was as wonderful as their service. It's on the main town strip.

Casa Doina: De luxe restaurante for less than 25€

by jlcervera

In a Bucarest 19th-century villa, Casa Doina is probably one of the most luxuous restaurants in the city, with traditional & fusion food. You will probably see not-so-young businessmen accompanied of much-younger nice girls. The ambience is relaxed and some days there is live classic and traditional music. However, the service you would expect in this kind of restaurants does not meet the standards. The price is very high compared to other restaurants in Romania, but nothing compared to Paris, Madrid or Rome. Try the smoked duck - not available all nights. There are excellent Romanian wines.

The Beercart

by CliffClaven

The one place old Cliffie would return to in Bucharest is the Caru cu bere (Beercart), a delightful restaurant in a 100-year-old building that somehow escaped the ravages of Ceaucescu. The food was simple but excellently prepared, and the draft beer was much better than the bottled beer on sale elsewhere in the capital. The night old Cliffie was there, a wedding party was celebrating loudly across the restaurant with traditional Romanian songs and dances.

Don"t miss Sarmale's and Tuica....

by alirom

Food in Romania is very good and cheap if you compare to western prices. It seems very expansive for local standard of living. Of course a moderate tip at the beginning to the waiter will give you better service and better food. Although international cuisine is available in better quality restaurants, make sure that you savour the local Romanian dishes. Typical Romanian specialities include a range of soup - "ciorba", a sour soup made from fermented bran, bacon, potatoes and beef or chiken. " Sarmale " is a spicy dish of bitter cabbage leaves stuffed with meat, and " Mititei " are small grill sausages perfumed with aromatic herbs. A range of excellent white and red Romanian wines of the famous vineyards of Cotnari, Murfatlar, Valea Calugareasca, Odobesti accompany local and international dishes to perfection, while " Tuica " the local plum brandy is often drink as a digestive. ...: ROMANIAN WINES

by alirom

As legend has it, the god of wine was Thracian born, in what is today the territory of Romania. Wine has been produced in this area since the 7th century BC. The abundance and fame of the Dacian (as this part of Thracia was called) wines were so well known that in order to put an end to the migratory people’s incursions, the Dacian king Burebista (1st century BC) ordered all the vineyards destroyed. Of course, not all the vineyards were uprooted and soon many of them were replanted. Wine growing has been known for centuries long in Romania. The country has been favoured by its geographical position in South-Eastern Europe, by its proximity to the Black Sea, as well as by the specificity of the local soil and climate. The COTNARI vineyard is relating to the great Romanian prince Stephen the Great (15th century). Not only did he bravely fight against the Turks, but seems to have been very...

in Deva and Brasov: Chinese food in Romania...

by shotgunsally

In Deva, the chinese food restaurant is fantastic. Very hard to find, however. It is in the first group of houses as you walk away from the train station and cross the road on the right. It was run by a Chinese family that has quite the reputation in the region. It's small and intimate and looks like every other chinese restaurant in the world... However, the Chicken Fried Rice and Pineapple Chicken were THE BEST I've ever tasted. Everybody was happy with their food and the staff were very friendly.
