Peles Castle is one of the nicest castles in Eastern Europe, built between 1873-1883 by Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.

The castle was built in wood, stone, bricks and marble and comprises more than 160 rooms. The representative style used is German Renaissance, but one can easily discover elements belonging to the Italian Renaissance, Gothic, German Baroque and French Rococo style.

Peles is surrounded by seven terraces decorated with statues (sculptured by the Italian, Romanelli), stone-made-wells, ornamental vases and Carara marble. The architects used an abundance of wooden decoration, both for the exterior and for the interior of the castle, which confers a very special quality to the building.

Quite outstanding are the big Armory Room, the small Armory Room, the Florentine Room, the Reception Room (where paintings and wooden sculptures depicting 16 castles of the Hohenzollerns are exhibited), the Moresque Room, The French Room, the Turkish Room, the Council Room, the Concert Room as well as the Imperial Suite.

Near Peles castle there is Foisorul, a kings' residence with 42 rooms designed in the Swiss style.

    The Triumphal Arch in Bucharest

    Triumphal Arch - Bucharest

You can obviously see this one looks like the Paris' Arc de Triomphe, though smaller (27 meters vs. 50 meters). The history of the arch in Bucharest is interesting:

    - a first, wooden arch, was built in 1878 after Romania gained its independence
    - a larger arch was built on the same site in 1922 after World War I to commemorate the dead
    - the current arch was built in 1936 and has 27 meters in height

Wikipedia has a nice list of triumphal archs in the world (34 of them at the time I made this tip)

  • Directions: The arch is in the middle of an intersection of 5 roads, the north one is one of the main roads for exiting Bucharest to DN1 to the mountains resorts (Sinaia, Predeal, Poiana Brasov). Next to the intersection with the arch is the Herastrau Park.

  • The Prahova Valley, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Romania. Sinaia, Predeal and Buşteni are all important mountain ski resorts located in this region.

    - The Peleş Castle near Sinaia, a Neo-Renaissance castle placed in an idyllic setting in the Carpathian Mountains built during King Carol I of Romania’s rule and one of the most iconic buildings in Romania.

    - The Village Musesum (Muzeul Satului), in Bucharest, an open-air ethnographic museum located in the Herăstrău Park showcasing traditional Romanian village life. The museum extends to over 100,000 m2 and contains 272 authentic peasant farms and houses from all over Romania.

    - Lipscani, a street and a district of Bucharest which in the Middle Ages was the most important commercial center of Bucharest and of the whole Wallachia. It is located near the ruins of the old Princely Court built by Vlad III the Impaler.

    - The Negru Vodă Monastery, in Câmpulung, supposedly built in 1215 by Radu Negru, legendary first Prince of Wallachia.

    - The Cathedral of Curtea de Argeş, built in the early 16th century, is one of the most famous buildings in Romania, and stands in the grounds of a monastery, in Curtea de Argeş city.

    - The Royal Court and The Chindia Tower in Târgovişte, important landmarks in the history of the of the Wallachian voivodship.

    - The Berca Mud Volcanoes in Buzău County, a rare geological feature in the form of small volcano-shaped structures typically a few meters high caused by the eruption of mud and volcanic gases.

    - The Eternal Fire (Focul Viu) from Lăptari, another rare natural feature, caused by continuous gaseous build-ups which ignite due to pressure and friction with the bedrock.

    - The Clock Museum in Ploieşti, a unique museum in Romania housing a large clock collection, some of the items in the collection dating back to the 17th century.

Ride a Boat to the Mysterious Grave of Dracula!!!

  • My driver and guide, a nice 60 year old Romanian recommended by my hotel, brought me to the mysterious place where Dracula (aka Vlad III, Count Tepes) is supposedly buried: The Monastery of Snagov, near Bucharest.

The Monastery is built on an islet, and you hire a little boat to bring you there! Exciting…

Legend has it that Vlad III’s body was decapitated by the Turks and his head sent to Istanbul preserved in honey - where the sultan had it displayed on a stake as proof that the Impaler was dead. And then his remains were brought to Snagov, near Bucharest.

I was the only tourist visiting the little monastery at the time, and a young boy accompanied us into the small building since the receptionist was at lunch. There is a small tribute for Vlad III and picture frame of the Impaler marks the cement rectangle that covers his “supposed” grave…Is he really underneath? This issue is controversial and maybe he is, maybe he is not. But no matter what, the little monastery is very interesting to visit – specially with the little boat ride. It has a nice green garden and beautiful flowers.
