Transylvania

by cianmurr

You could just drive around the amazing countryside here stopping off in the little villages that are dotted throughout Saxonland. They have very picturesque fortified churches, and really nice saxon village houses. The bigger towns like Sighisoara, Brasov and Sibiu are also very beautiful and well worth stopping off or staying in.

Visit Brasov

by codrutz

My VT page about BrasovBrasov is located in the middle of Romania, in the Carpathian mountains. It has a lot to offer: old city center, former walls, the bastions, the gates, the Black Church, the pedestrial street (former river)Brasov is a starting point for day trips to Bran and Sinaia and a stop before Sibiu

Hiking in the Carpathian Mountains

by codrutz

Definitely one thing to do in RomaniaRomania has to offer great hiking routes in the Carpathian Mountains that crosses the country, having massifs like Piatra Craiului, Fagaras, Bucegi to name only the three most known. The highest peak in Romania is Moldoveanu (2544m) but there are many peaks around 2000m which make those accessible for everybody (with some preparation for hiking). There are hundreds of marked paths of various difficulties, national parks, flora and fauna is interesting, clean air. For rock climbers there are also places with challenging walls (climbers are there almost every day).

Try the Romanian food

by codrutz

Really, you can do a very special trip just with this purpose. Mainly focused on grilled meat traditional recipes, but also using a lot of vegetables, cheese, polenta and spices (with moderation), Romanian food is, apart from original, very tasty and more than ready to fill an empty stomach of a hungry gourmand :)Check the other pictures .. your appetite will go up :)

The Peles Castle in Sinaia

by codrutz

Peles Castle is one of the nicest castles in Eastern Europe, built between 1873-1883 by Prince Carol of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.The castle was built in wood, stone, bricks and marble and comprises more than 160 rooms. The representative style used is German Renaissance, but one can easily discover elements belonging to the Italian Renaissance, Gothic, German Baroque and French Rococo style. Peles is surrounded by seven terraces decorated with statues (sculptured by the Italian, Romanelli), stone-made-wells, ornamental vases and Carara marble. The architects used an abundance of wooden decoration, both for the exterior and for the interior of the castle, which confers a very special quality to the building. Quite outstanding are the big Armory Room, the small Armory Room, the Florentine Room, the Reception Room (where paintings and wooden sculptures depicting 16 castles of the...

The Triumphal Arch in Bucharest

by codrutz

You can obviously see this one looks like the Paris' Arc de Triomphe, though smaller (27 meters vs. 50 meters). The history of the arch in Bucharest is interesting: - a first, wooden arch, was built in 1878 after Romania gained its independence- a larger arch was built on the same site in 1922 after World War I to commemorate the dead- the current arch was built in 1936 and has 27 meters in heightWikipedia has a nice list of triumphal archs in the world (34 of them at the time I made this tip)

Ride a Boat to the Mysterious Grave of Dracula!!!

by jumpingnorman

My driver and guide, a nice 60 year old Romanian recommended by my hotel, brought me to the mysterious place where Dracula (aka Vlad III, Count Tepes) is supposedly buried: The Monastery of Snagov, near Bucharest. The Monastery is built on an islet, and you hire a little boat to bring you there! Exciting…Legend has it that Vlad III’s body was decapitated by the Turks and his head sent to Istanbul preserved in honey - where the sultan had it displayed on a stake as proof that the Impaler was dead. And then his remains were brought to Snagov, near Bucharest. I was the only tourist visiting the little monastery at the time, and a young boy accompanied us into the small building since the receptionist was at lunch. There is a small tribute for Vlad III and picture frame of the Impaler marks the cement rectangle that covers his “supposed” grave…Is he really underneath? This issue is...

Driving to magnificent Peles Castle in Sinaia

by jumpingnorman

This is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe and the main entrance with all its wooden carvings is a sight to behold. The castle was built somewhere around 1872 by King Carol I after he visited the area years before and fell in love with it. There's a great library which if I remember right had a secret door (through one of the books), and the castle have several modern features because it was one of the first castles to have electricity. It has an interior elevator, vacuum cleaner and central-heating system. The castle has 170 rooms, but only a few (about 10 or so) can be visited by tourists. But even so, the few rooms you see will satisfy castle lovers.Visitors receive an extensive tour of the rooms at the ground and first floor, with guide in five foreign languages. On November, Castelul Peles (the Peles Castle) is closed for general cleaning.Str. Pelesului, Nr. 2, 106100...

Calafat

by josephescu

A sleepy off the beaten path gem, on the shores on the Danube coming to/from Bulgaria, Calafat makes a nice stopover: romantic atmosphere, cobblestone streets to wander around un-renovated XIX century buildings, large parks, and the opportunity of a more scenic way to cross a border: small ferries over the Danube. from Craiova: - 2-3 daily trains (very slow, 3 hours). By bus, 90 minutes: there’s at least one bus from Craiova at 11,20; from Calafat there’re buses at 15,15 and 16 p.m. from Vidin – the only way is by ferry, regular services all along the week, takes 1,5 – 3 hours (including waiting time, loading, unloading, border formalities, 20 min walk on the Bulgarian side). For more info, pics and tips go to my Calafat page, the only one on VT for the time being.
