Churches and Monasteries in Transylvania

by monica71

In Transylvania you can find lots of centuries old "fortified churches", medieval religious and military ensembles, built by villagers for defense purposes. These churches are surrounded by strong walls and defence towers. They served the purpose of protecting the village built around the church by invaders. The first fortified church built in Transylvania is the one from Carta (in Sibiu county). It was built in 1202 by the monks. In 1241 the monastery was destroyed by tartars (tatari), but it was rebuilt by the monks. In 1477 Matei Corvin banded it down under the rule of the Roman-Catholic church from Sibiu, but the church was rebuilt again in 1519. Other old fortified churches can be found in Sanpetru, Ghimbav and Prejmer (all of them in Brasov county). All of them date back from the 14th-15th century. Another monastery worth mentioning, is the one from Sambata de Sus, called...

Wooden Churches in Maramures

by monica71

Maramures is an area well know for the wooden churches. The architecture of the wooden churches in the villages of Surdesti, Sugatag, Berbesti, Moisei, Calinesti, Vadu Izei, Botiza, Rozavlea is well known all over Europe. They are built of thick oak with fir beams horizontally placed. The pictures that you see here do not belong to me, I can not take credit for them, but they are very nice and worth to load them up.One of the oldest wooden churches that exists today is the one from Moisei (built in the 14th century), which was also the episcopal residence. The church became an important religious painting center in the 17th and the 18th centuries. The church in Surdesti (1724) is considered the tallest old wood building in Europe. It is 54m tall or about 177 ft.

Monasteries in Dobrogea

by monica71

Dogrogea is the oldest territory of Romania. It is located between the Danube and the Black Sea. It is the land where the oldest Christian monks presence was documented back in the 3rd century. The monk Audius (native of Syria) was exiled here by Constantin the 2nd, the Byzatin empire emperor at the time. He is mentioned in the documents as being the oldest monk in the area. He is also the founder of the monasteries in Dobrogea region.Below is a list with some of the oldest monasteries in the area:1. Monastery St Apostle Andrew's Cave (in Constanta county) can be found between Constanta and Ostrov, in the village of Ion Corvin. It is basically a cave where St Andrew lived. Crowds of religious people gather here from all over the country to pray.2. Cocos Monastery (in Tulcea county) was built in 1833 by three monks. It was restored during the time and the last restoration took place in...

Monasteries in Muntenia and Oltenia

by monica71

You can find some of the best churches in the country in these areas. I will start my list with the ones that are close to Bucharest and that are worth a visit. There are, of course, several monasteries and churches in Bucharest that are very old and interesting, but I would recommend you try to go to at least one around the city also, if your time allows. If you do not have time to visit a church around Bucharest, make sure you stop at least by Antim Monastery (1713-1715). It is located in Bucharest and it is easily accessible.1. Cernica Monastery founded in 1608 by Cernica Stirbei. It is located 12km away from Bucharest. It is built on the islands of St George and St Nicholas by the Cernica Lake, surrounded by an old forest. The present church from the St Nicolas island was built in 1815 by Father Superior Timotei. Between 1818-1850 Saint Hierarch Calinic of Cernica was the Father...

Monasteries in Moldavia

by monica71

The churches and monasteries with paintings on the exterior walls in Northern Moldavia (Moldova) are well known all over the world. The exterior paintings on the walls are unique to Moldavia. The churches were built by great Romanian rulers or historic personalities. I have included below a list with the churches you must not miss visiting if you go to Moldavia. There are a lot more churches and monasteries in the area, but in my opinion these are the ones you should consider visiting. 1. Voronet Monastery (in Suceava county) was built in 1488 by Stephan the Great. It is famous for its blue background of an intense brilliance (unique in the whole world). 2. Sucevita Monastery (in Suceava county) was built by Movila Brothers between 1581 and 1584. It contains the greatest number of images from the whole country and the greatest number of scenes, which give the impression of a miniatured...

Bucuresti

by Mique

This city is one of the few places i really really didn't like at all. I'd planned to stay a few days but i left after a day and a night. Don't ask me why i didn't like the city, i couldn't tell you but i honestly did. And that while i usually like cities. It was so bad that after a little more than half a day walking around i went back to the hostel to read a good book and wait the time till i could leave (i had to wait for some friends to arrive. They didn't like Bucarest either so our leaving it was settled quite quickly). Though i know some people who like Bucarest immensely so i think everybody should make up their own mind. For me, it is easily the place to be missed in Romania. There are so many much more interesting places to be visited.

The Danube Delta

by Mique

We were in the delta late april 2005. And absolutely loved it. Although there were minor inundations at that time it wasn't a big problem yet (as it was later in the season of 2005) . We didn't have the best guide into the delta (for a story of our experiences read Adventures in the Danube Delta . But it is a great place to visit and if you are into birdwatching, they have the biggest pelican colony here. Just make sure you have enough money to pay for your expenses. The small villages don't have ATM's or exchange offices. But finding accommodation isn't hard at all. People will offer it to you as soon as you get to Tulcea (mean city of the region). Although it might be a bit more crowded in high season.

Sinaia

by Mique

The main reason i wanted to visit Sinaia was because of the 2 palaces, Peles and Pelisor. The fun part is that one the one day i made it to Sinaia i never got even close to the palaces. Instead we went up the mountain. It was beautiful weather and the views were amazing. That is, after i recovered from the trip with the cable car. I have a fear of heights and especially the way up wasn't my cup of tea. Down went a bit better and then i also saw a bit more of the landscape. Though from the mountain itself the views were very good too. In april 2005 i went back to visit the monastery and the 2 palaces. Although Peles is a beauty from the outside and the rooms that are open for visiting are quite amazing i loved Pelisor a lot more. It is smaller and has a more 'family' feel to it while Pelisor is more stately. Besides Pelisor one visits on one's own so you can stay and look at things as...

The transfagaras highway

by Mique

If you have the chance to go over the transfagaras highway i can tell you it is worth it. Of course it is a whole different experience then hiking in the Fagaras Mountains. Having not a great amount of time (and a lousy physical condition) a fellow-hosteler and i took a car (with driver) for E30 each to take us up. Luckily due to the very good weather the tunnel on the top of the mountains was still open in october. You might want to check before you go on this road. Because if it is closed, there is just one road open for you. The way back.... In summer i think you can hitchhike this part easily i think but in october we met only 3 or 4 cars going the opposite way. Along the way you pass Poienari castle. By some called Dracula's true castle. It was at least build on behalve of Vlad Tepes. So i guess it does have a bit more of a claim to it then Bran. You'll see 2 lakes. One huge...

Rasnov citadel

by Mique

The climb to this citadel isn't the easiest to do. It starts with steps which you have to find in what looks like someone's back yard. Then the steps slowly give way to bare rock. So the higher you get, the less easy the going. I had met just 2 other people going up and saw only four people coming down. So when i finally made it up here i was amazed at how many people where here. It turned out there is also an easy way up, by car. There is a car park at the back of the citadel. I took this road back to Rasnov as it was much easier to follow. And ended up back in Rasnov at roughly half a kilometer from the place where i had started.....The Citadel itself is very impressive from the outside. The people of Rasnov build it to protect their town. But it fell into ruins. Now a wealthy Italian has bought up the place. And it is being rebuild. They use the original stone but still. I'm not sure...
