Orthodox monasteries - Curtea de Arges

by josephescu

Curtea de Arges Monastery is a real architectural jewel and maybe one of the most appreciated churches in the wholecountry. Built in Albesti stone along with marble and mosaic brought from Constantinople by Neagoe Basarab in 1517, the church amazes by richness, pomp and glamour. The curch serves as a Royal necropolis - tombs of its founders, Neagoe Basarab and Radu from Afumati, as well as of the first couples of Romanian kings and queens (Carol I and Elisabeta, Ferdinand and Maria). This is also a place of the legend of Manole the Craftsman - one day, a very wealthy and religious Wallachian prince, rode with nine masons and their master Manole to find a place and build a church more beautiful than anyone may have seen before. The masons started to work, but whenever they reached to the top, the walls would colapse before they could ever finish it. They decided that the first human being...

NICE CITIES - Sibiu

by Romanian_Bat

Sibiu (German Hermannstadt) is the biggest and nicest medieval city in Romania. It was first stated in historic deeds in 1192-1196, being located on the same site where a previous community had existed. Developed by the Saxons, the city itself has preserved a harmonious bunch of buildings that are very picturesque and interesting. The fact that the fortress wall was made of red bricks resulted in the nickname the city bears: “The Red City”. The main attractions are:-The Brukenthal Museum, built in baroque style (1780-1785), whose art collections have been gathered together ever since the 18th century; there are exhibited paintings from all the art schools in Europe, various traditional objects, old books and so on.-The whole city developed around the main square and the Great Stairs. In the middle of this square there is an Evangelic Church, in gothic style (14th century; if you talk...

NICE CITIES - Timisoara

by Romanian_Bat

Timiºoara is located in a plains area, being inhabited ever since the Neolithic Age. The Romans have also stepped here. The city was destroyed with the Turkish invasion in the 13th century, it was rebuilt the next century, and in the 15th century it became the royal residence for a short period of time (under the rule of Iancu Hunyadi). Among the tourist attractions, we can list:-Banat Museum, located in Iancu Hunyadi’s former castle, with many archeological or artistic exhibits-The former City Hall, a baroque style building from 1731-1734-The Roman-Catholic cathedral, a monumental building from 1736-1773-The Serbian Cathedral, built in 1734 and completed in 1791-The Franciscan Monastery, built in 1733-1736- The Orthodox Cathedral, started in 1936, completed in 1940-The Mizericordiens’ Hospital and Church (18th century), with the old fortress wallsClose to the city there is an...

Fagaras Mountains

by PaulinSF

I'll echo the tip given by someone else here: if the road isn't closed for the winter, ride up the Transfagarasan Road (highest elevation: appproximately 8,350 feet or 2,050 meters). Heading north, stop at the exquisite Monastery of Curtea de Arges first. As you ascend, you pass through a dramatically steep gorge and below the ruins of the 15th century Poienari Citadel, far more authentically associated with Vald Tepes (Dracula) than Bran Castle. Here, too is the Vidraru Dam, and it's mountain surrounded manmade lake. Looking down from a high perch, the metallic 166 m. high sculpture, "Electrical Man", shines as he lofts 2 bolts of electricity. In the distance, you can spot the snow-covered peaksw and the pass between them. You may be temporarily halted by a shepherd, his dog, and a couple hundred sheep along the way.The climb becomes true alpine scenery, with plunging waterfalls,...

Neverending

by kelmck23

So many things to do. So many old buildings and beautiful scenery to see. We went around and looked at all the old churches and buildings before the communist era. The shopping is great, and the shoes are soooooo cheap. There are so many poor little puppys, so one day we found four babys and took them to a shelter owned by a german lady who rescues the dogs and puts them up for adoption in Germany. I never been to the sea, but my friend goes every summer and says its a must do. Just travel around and you will never get bored.

Painted Monastaries of Southern Bucovina

by tylr6625

Ordoned with frescoes of stories from the bible, on the inside and outside walls, the monastaries have stood since the 15th and 16th centuries. Miraculousley the paint on the outter walls is preserved for the most part. These centers of Romanian Orthodoxy show the importance of religion in this land and the beautiful art and architecture representing it. The monks and nuns at the monastaries offer guided tours.

Constanta: party on the Black Sea

by midnight_mike

For those wanting to experience a little R&R, head to the city of Constanta on the Black Sea coast. Romanians flock here every summer, paying a small fortune in the process. There is no lack of places to stay or party. Although expensive compared to other parts of Romania, it is still a bargain when compared to similar places in Western Europe.Under Roman occupation, Constanta, named after Constantine the Great’s half-sister Constantiana, became an important port city. The poet Ovid was exiled in Constanta, spending his final eight years there. He mentions the city, then known as Tomis, in many of his poems.

Villages, villages

by tesshotta

Get out of the cities (I was in Cluj and all these villages were within 1 hours drive of the city) and visit the villages, but be aware the roads are bumpy and it would be great to have a four wheel drive, but only the rich can afford that. My work took me up into the hills and the drive was amazing. Although it was storming most of the time I was in romania, it was amazingly beautiful. The people are as beautiful as their country. The villages I visited took me back in time. Be sure and bring food and drink and your camera of course. I will research the names of the villages, but since I was driven in the rain in a country where I wasn't even sure where east or west was you'll have to do a little home work of your own. Here the villages I visited: Martinesti Bontidu Panticeu Arghisu Dancu Agarbiciu

Snagov: the burial place of Vlad Tepes

by midnight_mike

Vlad Tepes is buried in a church on an island on Lake Snagov, about 30 minutes northeast of Bucharest. The island used to be much larger than than it is now and had been fortified in the middle ages. There have been many legends and rumors about Tepes' death and burial, but this is most likely where he was buried. There are two spots in the tiny church where his body is believed to rest. Most visitors assume he was buried near the altar, but evidence suggests that he was buried near the entrance of the church. The priests were grateful that Tepes had donated so much money to the church, but they did not want his body to be too close to the altar. After all, he was guilty of many brutal murders. To get to Lake Snagov, you will either have to rent a car, hire a driver, or take a bus from Bucharest into the town. From there, you can either rent a row boat or be driven in a motor boat. Once...

Timisoara

by midnight_mike

Timisoara is one of Romania's largest cities and a great place to stop on your way to or from Belgrade in Serbia. As anyone from Timisoara will proudly tell you, this is where the 1989 Romanian revolution started. The main attraction is the old town center, with many bars and restaurants opening up in the last five years. Any visitor should also visit the Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral, which is an impressive structure from the 1930s.
