Be very careful if you catch the overnight train from Budapest to Bucharest as it arrives at midnight. There are many fake taxis and they can extort a lot of money out of you. In my Romania homepage I have written a story about an experience I had. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

GPS are very usual in Romania! Even my self I have a GPS Mio C520. If you have a TomTom map will be a problem with Romanian map, but Mio map and iGO map are really good. In Constanta area the roads are the best compare with this part of Europe. Bucharest - Constanta Highway (A2) is 75 % on duty, the rest of 25 % is under construction, the connexion rooad is one line or Expressway in very good conditions. Constanta city have the best streets from entire Romania. If you wish to see some pictures or small video movies with Constanta theme, streets or traffic, take this two web adress: http://www.panoramio.com/user/44941 http://www.youtube.com/user/TAXIcon Have a nice trip, Sandu Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Hitchhiking is somehow common in Romania. Commuters, backpackers and other people on the budget use the regional buses or just stay at the exit of large cities with signs pointing their destination. For example in Bucharest, when you exit north (E60/DN1), near the big round intersection at the "House of Press" you may spot some people with signs "SINAIA" (125km) or "BRASOV" (170km) or when you exit north-east to Moldova (E85/DN2) you may see hitchhikers going to "URZICENI" (60km), "BUZAU" (111km) or even "FOCSANI" (182km), "BACAU" (182km). If you're backpacking in Romania you can hitchhike safely. There are no dangers of being ripped off or other bad things. If somebody stops that is probably that he needs company for the road or even he wants to make some money. That should be less than the most cheap transportation (which are regional buses and mini-buses), so somewhere between 0 - 20 RON (0 RON if you're friendly and the driver likes you for being a tourist in Romania, 20 RON if he needs money, he will be very happy with that amount). Don't offer more (more than 20 RON, equivalent of EUR 5) for trips shorter than 200km. Longer than that you can go to EUR 10, for more you can always take the train. I used the Amerom car hire company services hiring a car for one week and I had no problems at all. The car was in very good condition and the local service at Otopeni Airport was fine even being Amerom a loca car hire company. Leave a Comment

If you wish to drive in Romania be aware that the cost of car hire can be expensive. There are alternatives to the large car hire companies, but make sure it is a reputable company. I would suggest you consider hiring a driver with the car as it eliminates the stress of finding your way around and adapting to the Romanian style of driving. Most Romanian roads are OK but always be aware that in some of the more off the beaten track areas the roads are extremely basic!

In Romania, you better rent the car WITH the driver. The difference in price is small - if at any, and a driver can be invaluable in finding and choosing the right road, place and people. Make sure that he (yes, in Romania is always a he) has a new car, in good condition and with AC. I also found a driver which is also a licensed guide will charge you much more; it's up to you if you need the extra service and are willing to pay for it; I didn't. We had an excellent driver - Viorel Oncioiu, with a new Mercedes Sprinter and I can definitely recommend him.
