Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport

by Ewingjr98

I flew into Bucharest airport in fall 2009. This is a nice, modern terminal (modernized and expanded in 1997), though it is smaller than you might expect with just 8 gates or so. I enjoyed the several duty free and souvenir shops, as we as multiple bars and cafes. There is an extension currently underway on the International Terminal to expand it from 5 to 13 jetways. This airport is the hub of the Romanian national airline, TAROM, as it serves over 30 other airlines that travel throughout Europe. This little airport moves some five million passengers per year.

Bus to Lviv leaves at 1030 outside restaurant Maramures this gets into Lviv BUS station(6 Euro taxi ride to centre) otherwise take night train which leaves about 1500 and arrivesLviv about 0630 next day.Bus and train cost 8 Euro. From Lviv there are several coaches a dayto Przemysl.Night bus to Warsaw leaves at 2200 (55 PLN) otherwise 1930 to Rzeskow and then to Warsaw.

Hitchhiking

by codrutz

Hitchhiking is somehow common in Romania. Commuters, backpackers and other people on the budget use the regional buses or just stay at the exit of large cities with signs pointing their destination. For example in Bucharest, when you exit north (E60/DN1), near the big round intersection at the "House of Press" you may spot some people with signs "SINAIA" (125km) or "BRASOV" (170km) or when you exit north-east to Moldova (E85/DN2) you may see hitchhikers going to "URZICENI" (60km), "BUZAU" (111km) or even "FOCSANI" (182km), "BACAU" (182km).If you're backpacking in Romania you can hitchhike safely. There are no dangers of being ripped off or other bad things. If somebody stops that is probably that he needs company for the road or even he wants to make some money. That should be less than the most cheap transportation (which are regional buses and mini-buses), so somewhere between 0 - 20...

Drive careful and stay cool

by codrutz

Road network in Romania is very extensive, meaning you can drive anywhere. That doesn't mean driving is easy. Before driving for the first time in Romania read the following:1) Traffic is heavy. Most of the roads (except the two highways) are always full, many trucks (TIR transport), small cars, minivans (for transport - those drivers are pretty mad). The most traffic is on the roads that connects Bucharest with the western border (Bucharest-Oradea/E60/DN1, Bucharest-Arad/E81/DN7). When you take detours to see the rural part of Romania, out of this main routes, traffic disappears and you can enjoy driving. But again, if you catch a bad day you could spend a few hours behind a truck or stay in a traffic jam around cities like Cluj, Deva, Sinaia or entering Bucharesy.2) Cars move at (very) different speeds. And I mean some overspeed (though radars are always on the roads) and some drive...

Regional bus lines

by codrutz

Commuters and people living in rural area use the regional bus lines as they are the cheapest way of transport (beside hitchhiking). The means of transportation for this are:a) COACHES (like the one used for international rides, with cca.50 places, air conditioned usually) - Romanian word is "AUTOCAR". This is the best choice as buses are modern.b) MINI-BUSES (small buses with cca. 20 places, rarely with air conditioning) - Romanian word is "MICROBUZ". Careful because some routes/companies can have smelly customers and the ride can be less than pleasant.c) USES (lower quality buses, cca.50 places, like the one used in public transport, no air conditioning) - Romanian word: "AUTOBUZ". Check and see before the ride, there might be old buses and the ride may be not such comfortable.Check out this website: http://www.autogari.ro which has some private bus lines with rides in Romania and even...

Cheap travelling to Romania

by petule

Unfortunately I dont know any cheap Romanian bus company but in fact, you can find some deals or offers with some low cost airlines. I think there could be some airline offering very cheap flights from Bucharest - at least you can pay the same amount as for the bus and travelling in plane is much more comfortable:-) Good luck!!! petule, www.myairdeals.com

Flying is safe (everything is...

by Romanian_Bat

Flying is safe (everything is of a relative nature, of course) and may be the best way to get to Bucharest, but also the most expensive, unless you come from very far away. Otherwise trains are OK. Romania is covered by InterRail (area H, together with BG, SR, CG, MK), Balkan FlexiPass (together with MK, BG, SR, CG, GR, TK). EuRail does not cover Romania. Apart from bearing a train ticket or a railway pass, one must always buy a seat reservation, which costs about 1 EUR; this is required for all fast trains (A, R, IC, EC, EN), except for local trains (P). Trains run on a daily basis to and from Budapest, Sofia, Belgrade, Thessalonica, Istanbul, Chisinau, Moscow, Kiev, Bratislava, Prague, Vienna, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Venice. By car: as the roads are not always in good conditions, especially secondary roads, do not bring your Lamborghini with you, please. Other means, like bicycles, are not...
