If you are staying in Romania...

by Tom1971

If you are staying in Romania for more than a couple of weeks, it can work out cheaper, if flying from the UK to fly first to either Prague or Budapest and then take a train from there. Romania's train network is relatively cheap and generally reliable, and covers much of the country. It is also easy and extremely cheap to get around Romania by hitch-hiking. If you do hitch hike you will rarely have to wait very long for a lift, and although you might meet a small number drivers who expect you to pay more because you are a foreigner just offer a small amount of cash at the end of the drive (as a rule it seems that about 20,000 lei, or about 40 UK pence, is an acceptable amount for journeys under 100km).

Slow but sure.

Train fares are a bargain compaired to UK. schedules are not so good, its best to study Bahn.de before you travel. Most trains are old but comfortable, there are new modern trains. An example fare is Arad to Timisoara 35 Lei [£8] return. A problem i found was platform numbers , some stations don"t appear to be numbered.

Cabs

by eridun_t

For getting around Bucharest your best bet really is walking during the day and taking a cab at night. It's amazing the difference in the city once the sun goes down! The cabs know all the clubs so it's easier to have them drive you. If you're out in the country though, a cab is the only way to go. If you're lucky and can negotiate it, you might be able to get a cab to drive you around for the day. This will make it infinitely easier on you and as long as you put a good tip in with the cabbie he'll show you more than what you'd see on a tour bus.

Trains = CFR

by josephescu

Railways network in the country is pretty extended and developed, so travelling by train between cities is straightforward. If your destination is a smaller village, the apparently chaotic minivan (often referred to as “maxi-taxi”) system is a better option. There are several types of trains which differ mainly in terms of comfort and not speed. Train timetable for routes inside the county are available online at www.cfr.ro.International timetable is listed online here on the CFR website. Information and reservation is also available via the phone at (+4-021)-9522.International ticket office in Gara de Nord in Bucharest can be reached at (+4-021) 319 95 39 - ext. 134 608No online tickets....they say for the time being, but i won't buy this :-)In many railways stations outside large cities or off the beaten path, train tickets consist of a small piece of cartboard with mostly...

Tractor-pulled "train" from Venus to Neptun

by WanderingFinn

Venus and the other small holiday resorts may be so small that they don't have many restaurants, maybe no ATM, no market and shops etc. That is why this funny tractor-pulled "train" is existing. At summertime it is a cool way to get around. It doesn't cost much; practically nothing. I used this train from my hotel Venus to a little bit bigger place named Neptun and found it really useful. I had my dinners at Neptun, made my shopping there, sometimes spent a day at the nice beach.

Budapest to Oradea

by worldandmore

I have recently travelled to Romania by train from the UK. If you have any questions let me know. The train from Budapest took around 4 hours to Oradea and was clean and pleasant. Although for half of the trip you were waiting around for the engine to be changed and the border control to get on with the visa inspections etc. The guard taks the passports of the train and brings them back. This trip could be done in less than 3 hours when they sort themselves out! Once you get to Oradea most taxi drivers speak English and the Hotels are not so far away. There is a shortage of cheap hotels here and you can ignore the lonely planet and rough guides as development has changed the pricing of many hotels. The Vultural Negro hote is now a 4 star and is around 80 Euro's a night. The cheapest hotel I have found is called the Atlas but it too is under upgrades. (double room, shower and TV was 15...

Car travel in Romania

by mise007

If you wish to drive in Romania be aware that the cost of car hire can be expensive. There are alternatives to the large car hire companies, but make sure it is a reputable company. I would suggest you consider hiring a driver with the car as it eliminates the stress of finding your way around and adapting to the Romanian style of driving. Most Romanian roads are OK but always be aware that in some of the more off the beaten track areas the roads are extremely basic!

If you want to live a real experience do travel by train "personal".I am sure you won't be sick because of the speed:35 kms.per hour. So,I could take many pictures quietly.Of course,I got different kinds of trains;otherwise I would be still travelling around Romania.

Driving - avoid speed radars

by josephescu

For driving between cities, motorists have developed a system of flashing their lights at each other to warn oncoming drivers of police with speed radars parked by the road. The result is that for much of the way cars bomb along at around 120km/h, before dropping to a surreally slow 50km/h at urban spots where the police are waiting.
