If you travel long distance... avoid Sageata

by josephescu

If you travel long distance by train in Romania, try to avoid Sageata Albastra cars running under Inter City trains to Moldova or Rapid trains to Brasov and Constanta. You can ask what types of cars are running when buying the ticket. While Sageata Albastra cars look nice from both inside and outside, seats are extremely small, uncomfortable and allowing very little place to move. Imagine sitting in a city-bus seat…. Nothing more. Besides, price is the same, air-con barely functions, and these trains are not faster than others.

CRAZY!!!!!

by kelmck23

If planning on driving in Bucharest be prepared. The people drive like crazys!!! Other than Bucharest, getting around is pretty easy. The traffic and the madness calms down alot. Becareful of the potholes. I was on a trip, my friend was driving and we hit a pothole, almost crashed, and blew a tire. They are deep and dangerous!!! Drive slow. The maxi taxis are a good way to get around if they are not crowded. They are clean and cheap. The buses are very crowded, so if you dont mind being shoved and cramped than go for it.Watch out for the horse and wagons, they are everywhere.

Traveling between Bucharest and Istanbul

by midnight_mike

The daily train from Burcharest in Romania to Istanbul is quite an experience. First, you have to dodge all the shady people in the Bucharest train station. Then you pass through Romanian border patrol, cross the Danube River and wait as the Bulgarian border patrol tries to figure out if you are a smuggler. As you wait for the train to start moving, children beg alongside men in adidas track suits who will ask if you want to change money. The rest of your day will be awfully boring as the Bulgarian landscape is not that interesting. I have passed through it six times, so I know what I'm talking about. In the middle of the night, you will be awoken by whistles as you arrive at the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Everyone has to get out of the train on the Turkish side and buy a visa (unless you are from a select few countries which don't need one). The train will be stopped for at...

TRAINS

by ThiagoRamos

After 5 days there, I was very pleased with romanian trains. I used them to go from Bucharest to Sinaia, from Sinaia to Brasov, from Brasov to Sighisoara and from Sighisoara to Budapest. I think most of the romanian big/medium cities are reached by train...To go to Bran Castle and to Rasnov Fortress I took a bus. The bus was crowded (with some people standing as there weren't seats for everybody) and hot, but I don't think there are other options to get there...

CFR: An Unforgettable Experience

by roomania

Traveling by train in Romania brings a wealth of unforgettable experiences. First of all, there are four distinct types of trains, varying in quality and price. Not surprisingly, quaility is commensurate with price. Hence the more you're prepared to pay, the higher quality rail ride you'll have. At the highest quality and price level is that of the InterCity trains, these are the cleanest, fastest, most efficient trains you'll find in Romania and are similar those of Western European standards. Next are "Rapide" trains, slightly slower, and without many of the amenities of the InterCity these trains also run Internationally and are acceptable by most Western standards. Following are "Acelerat" trains, which in itself, is a misnomer. It, in fact is not nearly as fast as the name would lead one to believe and are the preferred mode of travel by most Romanians. Students also receive a...

Rental Cars in Romania

by DSwede

If you are travelling by car, bear in mind that with extremely rare exception, rental cars are not available outside of Bucharest or Constanta. Rental cars are fairly pricy, ranging around 50Eur/day.If you plan to cross the boarders to Moldova or Bulgaria, or others, the Romania rental cars are not typically authorized to leave the country.

Gara de Nord

by flynboxes

The infamous Gara de Nord is probably not what it used to be and in a good sense. When I arrived I expected to swarmed by begging children and other blight. While begging children seem to pop up everywhere in Bucharest it was not that bad at the station. The staff for the most part are helpful and the train tickets prices are great if you are from the West. There are separate counters for domestic and international trains. If you are facing the station the international office is off to the right of the station entrance and the domestic counters are in the next hall over. There is a place to leave your luggage and plent of places to eat inside the station. Police guard the entrance and prevent unticketed passengers to enter...except for cab drivers it seemed.

Getting from the airport to downtown Bucharest

by vikingrider

It is confusing upon arrival in the Bucharest airport and no one is helpful. The bus to downtown Bucharest loads DOWNSTAIRS at the lower level. You must first buy a ticket. The ticket booth is located to the right, against the far wall, as you exit the building downstairs. No one was available to sell the ticket until just before the bus arrived. Depending on where you stay in Bucharest, you can ask people on the bus where to get off. Once off at the nearest location, be prepared to walk on crowded, narrow cobblestoned streets where your luggage will not roll. I do backpacks. Local men will not get out of your way. Local young people are rude and make remarks. Beggars will hassle you. However, it is quite easy to walk and the bus was only about $1.50 so it is well worth it. If staying at Hotel Carpti, I recommend using their driver to pick you up at the airport.

Romania by rail.

by skullcrusher

First of all I'd like to say that I hate traveling by train. Despite how much people love to romantisize about traveling around Europe by rail, it's my opinion that rail travel is slow (compared to bus) and expensive (at least it is in Western Europe). I'll take a Eurolines bus or a one-way plane ticket instead - and that is what I usually do.However in Romania such options are very limited. In fact, travel by train is the primary way of going long distances to most parts of the country. There are noteworthy exceptions, but that is generally the case. So in Romania I used the train much more than I normanlly would think to do. I will admit that by using the rail I was able to get excellent views of the Romanian countryside and life in the rural areas. The scenery is truly stunning in the mountainous areas. Another nice aspect of train travel is that I could get up out of my seat and...

Planning to rent a car?

by MariusG

In Romania, you better rent the car WITH the driver. The difference in price is small - if at any, and a driver can be invaluable in finding and choosing the right road, place and people. Make sure that he (yes, in Romania is always a he) has a new car, in good condition and with AC. I also found a driver which is also a licensed guide will charge you much more; it's up to you if you need the extra service and are willing to pay for it; I didn't. We had an excellent driver - Viorel Oncioiu, with a new Mercedes Sprinter and I can definitely recommend him.
