Train

by jhawk1000

The cheapest and best way to travel in Romania is by train. A first class compartment ticket costs next to nothing and you can close the door for privacy or you can go into the corridor to smoke or look at the scenery from the other side of the train. Compartments were clean, sparse but nice. The bathrooms left much to be desired.

Now, I heard a lot of bad about Romanian trains; everybody said they were dirty, crowded and slow... well, ok, maybe most of them is not that clean, still they're very cheap and the trail is pretty large, so I think it's worth. Plus I really doubt they're more dangerous than our Polish trains, for I was travelling by night, alone, and nothing bad happend - just the opposite, I had a very nice time and met very nice people... of course, if you're used to the highest standards, taking a "personal" in Romania will be sort of a shock to you, but see, if all the World looked the same there wouldn't be any reason to move your ass and explore ;)

TAROM (Taking Alternative Route Over Moldova)

by CliffClaven

TAROM, Romania's national carrier, flies to such exciting places as Beijing, Chisinau and Damascus. Okay, the airline also flies to New York and several interesting European cities. But it is hardly up there among the world's leading carriers. TAROM carries about a million passengers a year; the major US airlines each carry that number in a week. But TAROM does have a fairly young fleet and offers competitive fares on routes to Romania.

Trammy Buses

by Dr.Knockboot

Above ground bus is the best way around. Like any larger city in europe, unless you speak the language taxis can be a problem for alot of people. The drivers make alot less then in the west and my taxi driver friend here in Canada doesn't brag often about his paycheck so imagine what those guys are dealing with. If you dont know your way around ad have no idea of how to say where you are goning the odds are against you in getting a fair rate. On the bus....There is a national fear of catching "the Gripp" , or loosly translated a deadly lung virus caused by having the windows open on the bus. Even in the dead heat of the summer, if you try to open a window to cause a soothing draught, more likely than not you will have a bus load of people holding their throats and yelling "grippe, oh, grippe' and motioning to shut the window. Ofcourse always give your seat up to the elderly, or just...

Trains vs. Taxi

by VathekNet

Trains are dirt cheap, but a bit limiting.Taxi drivers can take you hours away and spend the day taking you places. Some even act as tour guides. Cannot recall the cost, but it was still cheap and gives flexibility.

Since Romania is not a island but has exit to sea, you can travel to it on boat, for Constanta, trains entering Romania from Bulgaria thru Russe - Giurgiu (Friendship Bridge), Hungary thru Vama Bors (??), from Ukraine, from Moldova thro Ungheni - Iasi, and flying from anywhere in the world landing on Otopeni Aeroport in Bucuresti. We have also internal flyghts you can travel with...or, you can bike

Romanian train systems

by lonely_traveller

Romania has three tiers of train system: the "Persoanne", the "Accelerate" and the "Rapid" trains. The Persoanne trains are the slowest and makes stop at every single station or every single villages. The Accelerate train is much faster and only stops in medium size cities or towns. The Rapid is "supposingly" to be the fastest. If you are travelling on short distance, a Persoanne train could be ok and you would also get to experience the village life by either sharing the seat with a chicken or a pig, etc..When riding on the Accelerate or the Rapid train, you have to buy a "supplement and reservation." This usually comes in one piece of cardboard. I personally highly recommend the Accelerate than the Rapid, since the Rapid is nearly double the price of an Accelerate and they are often quite the same speed. However, many times you have no choice in what train you take. They may only have...

Romanian trains

by lonely_traveller

Make sure you consult with a Romanian train timetable before you head to the train station. Trains departures are not very frequent and sometimes involve you in long detours. If you don't you would either ended up confused or having to wait at a station for a few hours before the next connection comes.

Minibuses to and from Hungary

by rainero

Don't take the expensive hungarian trains! In front of the train stations you'll find cheap private taxis and minibuses to take you from the border cities in Romania (Oradea and Arad) into Szeged or evenBudapest (many local people travel this way to Hungary). In Budapest near the Nepliget busstation are also romanian cars and minibuses whodrive back to their hometowns trying to find people. Ask around for the prices. We paid for a car from Budapest to Oradea around 30$, and from Arad to Szeged the same fare...If you are a bigger group and take a wholeminibus it's possible the best option...

Trains tips

by dkoishi

First : If you're coming from Hungary and you will board the train in the middle of the way from Budapest to Oradea or other destination in Romania, be sure to check if you're in the right carriage. We board the right train, wrong carriage and we almost ended in Ukraine.Second: Long trips are very exhausting and the poor conditions of the train (they are very dirty) makes the trips very uncomfortable, but you can stand it. Just avoid travelling when it's too hot (due to works in the tracks, trains pass more time stop than in movement from Ploesti to Bucharest), and don't even think to buy the 1st class ticket. They 1st class compartiments are so bad as the 2nd class ones.
